In an attempt to stop the proliferation of synthetic drugs, NSW has become the first state in Australia to completely ban substances with psychoactive properties.

New laws will attempt to stop the phenomenon of "legal highs" by banning the manufacture, supply and advertising of psychoactive substances and attempt to defeat manufacturers which simply changed the chemical compositions of their products if they were put on a prohibited list.

Good on the AU. - Now for the uk to do the same! Although this wont happen anytime soon.. + I realise my comment may piss on 99% of users cornflakes and shit on the other 1%'s chest. But im against legal highs, whats wrong with good old mdma/lsd & illegal substances? i understand people work & are drug tested for illegal substances.. but if there job meant that much to them they wouldnt bother taking anything. whether it be legal or illegal

I too am totally against "Legal Highs" but I am all in favour of cautious ad-hoc research into chemicals of a psychoactive nature. Bit of a contradiction eh? Either way, my interests in this area far outwiegh my need to earn money & are far more relevent an aspect of my life than my work life, which of course still takes up conseriderably more of my time! These interests however do not inhibit my ability to work or my already limited interest in my work.

I live in the NSW, and chamomile tea is still for sale :)

The new laws will provide a blanket ban on psychoactive drugs, with exemptions for tobacco, medicines, foods, drinks, caffeine and herbal remedies. An expert panel will decide what is exempt.

I guess chamomile tea is a drink, or medicine or herbal remedy. Or something. lol.

I personally don't care too much about this ban. It's been like this for a while now, but it's now set to stay this way. The legal highs were doing some real damage to some people, deaths and sickness etc. So many companies or people were pushing their products it became a bit of a joke, who knew what was in them either. No loss to me, I wouldn't touch that shit with a 10 foot pole anyway.

I'm just waiting and hoping something here changes with the cannabis laws really.

23536 - To put it bluntly. YES, as its no use to me or any 1 i associate with - i could'nt give a dog's balls if they were to ban chamomille tea.

Edgarshade - WHys that? Ive already said im against legal high's. My opinion is if people want to take drug's - there are plenty of illegal substance's already around what i much prefer. If people want to continue putting shite up there noses and eating shit fake AL-LAD as lsd let them go ahead.

Every high was a legal high once. Not all of the remaining ones are chemicals e.g. morning glory seeds, live cacti, cactus chippings, kratom. Every well known synthetic chemical high was an unknown, untested chemical once. I remember in 1991 I just assumed, just as my friends did, that MDMA had some scary long-term effect that would finish us all off like Parkingson's disease, emotional blunting etc.

Whatever way this new law is a massive over-reaction that basically shows the "war on drugs" for what it is. Not anything to do with safety but a war on people altering the mind.

If people really want to use these substances and take the risk they can import them illegally, just like they can with other illegal drugs. I think taking them off the shelves is good, they were in reach of kids and anyone way too easily. Way too easy for kids to rack them.

I wouldn't have had a problem if the companies who manufacture the products were made to list all the active ingredients and to have the products tested etc before they hit the shelves, but the way it was happening the manufacturers could have been selling dried shit in a packet and mixing it with whatever chemicals and putting it in some funky packaging with bright colours and a fancy name and logo and selling it for some huge marked up price.

+ PoleRider - i Agree with you, although alot of whats been sold via vendors online isnt being marketed on shelf's what i know of - & yeah i wouldnt be to bothered if it was tested properly. Although even when tested & research has been done - this isnt going to stop a goverment from trying to ban it.
+ Edgarshole - yes every1 chemical was once legal, but most the substances have alot of research, mdma around 15-20 years has it not?

By playhard's standard, a lot of stimulants and opioids shouldn't exist.

Banning substances will only increase mortality because there will be tons of misinformation, and black market interference.

Heroin... LSD... MDMA... Were all RC's at some point... Now, you almost have to test damn near everything you get off the street.

Why? Since there are so many different chemicals with the same modes of action, there are a variety of potencies....

Some are really too toxic to be safely used.

i wasnt born yesterday - know the illegqal substances were once legal. - And im all for testing, theres only really a small percentage of folk who are'nt testing what there buying. These are the unfortunate souls who usually spout "Oh it'll never happen to me" & stuff like "this is pure". But are then the 1s to be rushed to hospital after tkaing what could of been dog shit off some1s shoe? Testing is a must! Im against legal high's due to the lack of research there is on them - id rather clap my hands in covered shit than buy/take legal highs.

But banning all and every possible pychoactive substance is the wrong sledgehammer to crack the mystery-potentially-lethal-white-powder nut.

Personally, I'd like to see any legal high known only by its brand name taken off any shelves. People should always be able to know what they are buying, how much of it they are buying, what it will do, what the risks are and how to do it as safely as possible.

These proposed laws will also ban well-understood plant material such as morning glory seeds and peruvian torch. I'm sure that's not what most of us want.

I guess opinion is divided on RCs that are (if you know what sites to use/avoid) labelled, pure and (becoming) relatively established such as AMT and MDAI. There are probably quite a few of us who would not like to see them all banned wholesale simply because they are "psychoactive".

Well, this seems like a bit of an overreaction. I use drugs so of course I am against the banning of psychoactive substances. If you use drugs and still think they should be illegal then you are a fucking idiot in my oppinion, nothing personal about it...

They should just outlaw all these branded legal highs, that's what's causing the real harm. People not knowing what or how much they are taking, it's a recipe for disaster.
