Ativan never again....

What could have caused this reaction? Paradox?

I took a couple of Ativan last night to relax. It mixed well with my daily tramadol.
The lorazepam started out very well. I was relaxed and buzzed, but could function normally. I doses again a few hours later and felt even more relaxed. All was well. Nothing out of the ordinary. Granted, I don't take benzos much, but when I do it all goes well.

Around 1AM I turned off all the lights and laid down to go to sleep. I was very relaxed and knew I would fall asleep quickly. However, weird stuff started to happen at this time. I felt a little shaky, my mood was weird (almost mini-manic), and I would start dreaming almost immediately after closing my eyes and they were odd dreams and I would snap back awake.

It's hard to describe how I felt. Something was just amiss. All I could think is this is what mania must feel like. My thoughts were weird and racing. Again, I'm frustrated because it's hard to explain.

And believe it or not there were some slight visuals. Nothing major at all. But I seen a tiny right dot fly across the room several times. There was also quite a bit of nausea which is odd, because I was a little nauseated earlier that evening and the lorazepam took care of that.

Odd, huh? Ativan is the only benzo to have ever done this.
I didn't take much.

Had 250mg of tramadol prior throughout the day.
Then 2-3mg of lorazepam that night.

Sounds like you were catching a nod,but didn't quite get there due to tramadols speedy-ish effects.

Night terrors? I'll try to find my post, tell me if this seems similar when I post it

Sounds like the tramadol did all that. I'm not familiar with tramadol dosage strength but isn't 250mg a high dose?

Lorazepam would never produce those effects. In fact, Lorazepam is the only benzo which (on top of having the typical benzo properties) also acts as an antiemetic (antinauseant).

I guess some would consider 250mg a large dose. I've been using tramadol since 2003, though. And that's pretty good to up to only 250mg after daily use that long.

I'm almost out of tram (early again as usual) so I have to face a couple of days of withdrawal soon. 8o Only running out a couple of days early from refill date.

Sometimes, for all KINDS of reasons, our bodies react differently than they have in the past with certain meds, including them having an effect opposite of what is intended (drowsy-producing when normally stimulating, and vice versa). There are people that have been on a med for decades who will occasionally react poorly to it...again a multitude of factors playing into that.

While the experience was unpleasant, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I can totally understand your reluctance to taking Ativan again, but in all honesty, it would most likely be fine.

In my honest opinion, I think you overdid the Ativan dose, which caused an opposite effect for you. I think if you had stuck to 1-2mg, you wouldn't have had this issue. Then again, if you were having a scenario like I mentioned above, it would have possibly happened no matter the dose. That's the thing...its hard to say and you may never know "why".

Sounds like you were nodding out (the Lorazepam potentiating the sedatory effects of the Tramadol) but got a bit freaked out by it because of not knowing what was going on.

As mentioned, we can't be sure, but it sounds that it was such.

^ That's possible.
Tramadol had made me nod by itself plenty of times, but it's been awhile.

Tramadol has put me in odd states of being awake and on the verge of sleep. Could lie down, close my eyes, and start dreaming a minute later, but be aware I am napping. Very odd. And often pleasant.

ativan destroys my brain in ways that i cannot complain.
me and my friend popped a bunch of them and we were completely depersonalized - it was like we were watching someone else control our movements and speech. we managed to take a video of ourselves, in which we were both lying on adjacent couches shouting racist slurs at eachother and flailing with boxing gloves.

^none of which we remember. definitely an interesting drug.
my friend took four, and when he woke up he was wearing no pants and his garbage can was filled with piss.

OP, my advice is not to use lorazepam for awhile....especially not with tramadol.

There are loads of different benzo's out there, most can have differing effects on an individual....and mixing them with other drugs can vary effect-wise from person to person.

Lorazepam is one of my favourite benzo's, but its a strong-ish one & I personally have had loss of memory etc, especially mixed with alcohol (& phenazepam on one occasion...never again with THAT combo lol).

Why not change over to diazepam....its far safer all round, particularly if you are taking it along with something else. Its very controllable dose-wise, start low & if you're not getting the desired effects just take some more.

Diazepam is the safest benzo imo. Anyone here who disagrees with that statement, feel free to correct me...I won't be offended.

The safest benzo is actually probably Flurazepam because it's the only benzo with partial agonist properties.

Also, Lorazepam (Ativan) doesn't destroy brains. It can have paradoxical effects such as (possibly) delirium in a small percentage of people but that doesn't mean your brain has been destroyed.

OP sounds like it was tramadol. I hate that shit.. a scripted dose fucked my world all up..

I agree about the diazepam as well. I almost want to go off my klonopin and just take my diazepam. I don't see much of a point in taking both, and I don't use benzos recreationally anyways.

I have a couple more Ativan left. Might take a lower dose tomorrow evening. No point in them going to waste.

I will of course will be taking tramadol hours beforehand.
Damn...I'm about out of tramadol, btw. Will be running out a couple of days before refill is allowed. Uh oh...8o

I've hallucinated the most vivid shit one night on a bunch of lorazepam. Fence posts turning into crowds of people and weird crazy stuff... took wayyyyyyyyy too much over a couple hours. Definately more visual than shrooms/acid/2ci or anything else i've ever touched

I remeber taking 8mg's of Ativan with a few drinks and I fuckin tripped hard.

For a small percentage of the population, paradoxical adverse effects are possible with any psychotropic drug. With that being said, I'm surprised that a drug which affects GABA neurotransmitters in the way that benzodiazepines do - as a side effect - can potentially produce hallucinations in healthy individuals.
