At what age would you consider most people to be mature mentally?

Somewhere between the time that you realize you're dying and the final heartbeat. Not being poetic or quaint, I honestly believe the majority of people do not mature at all until death is about to take them, when the ego's finally collapse and they are forced to take the first proper look at themselves.

But I guess the maturity i'm talking about is not the one you're talking about. The definition of maturity hasn't been defined. However the one I'm talking about is the only type of maturity that actually matters, all other maturity is relative.

Depends on what "mature mentally" means. If it is referring to a capacity for detailed abstraction and symbolic logic, then being able to do higher level maths and sciences is exactly what it means. It is a type of "mental maturity" but perhaps not a universal definition of it. Hence the need to have a working definition of whatever it is you are tying to quantify before undertaking that task.

It has some relation to making good decisions however. Being able to use ration and being able to see that P implies Q and that P is more likely when R,can help with good decisions. Let P be getting fired, let Q being homeless and let R be stealing from work.
 
Im mature sometimes and immature sometimes. It all depends on what I am doing at that point in time. At work, im totally serious and act just like any other person there. Outside of work, I act like a typical 20 year old. I think thats a real sign of maturity, knowing that its ok to be immature, just at the right times. Work with any group of blue-collar workers ages 25+ and youll hear some of the most immature conversations in your life.
 
It may be relevant to add that the development of brain structures whose activity is correlated with decision making and impulse control continues into the late teens, with the physical maturation of areas correlated with empathetic behaviors taking until around age 20 to develop on average (last I read anyways). So, at earliest, on average, age 20. Whether or not people effectively exercise their neurobiology -- and what constitutes "effective exercise" -- is another matter all together, and I'm sure it's possible for those younger than 20 to use what they do have more effectively than many older than 20, as everyone has basically alluded to already. There's no doubt there are many out there far into adulthood that are basically children as far as their own subjective experience and ability to comprehend and respond to the demands of relationships is concerned (A philosophical argument could be made that on an experiential level these "big kids" are being raped and emotionally exploited by people who have no idea, and maybe can have no idea, that they're really twisted mental pedophiles, heh heh).
 
Depends on the person. I know 21 year olds more responsible than 50 year olds. I know 35 and 40 year olds who are more reckless than teenagers getting drunk and falling over themselves and smashing up cars and what not.

It's person to person. What age normally? In the US about 28 or 30 usually.
 
It depends on life experience. As a teenager, or young 20-something (which is me), we really dont have the years under our belt to be THAT mature. I feel very mature for my age, im responsible and can hang out w older ppl but at the end of the day im still young. I also dont think u can put an age limit on it either bc life experience varies person to person.. for example: one 22 year old may be super immature coddled their whole life while another 22 year old may be super mature bc they were forced to be independent from a young age. I know people nearly twice my age who are extremely immature and ive met teenagers who seem to have seen enough of the real world to act like someone a decade older than them. Each year I am shocked when I look back at the stuff I would do the previous year, as I now viewed it as less mature (I wouldn't consider it immature behavior, just less mature behavior than what I exhibit now). I know that it varies, but for me I would say 25 is the age that I would consider mature, because it's the first age that I can look back at the previous year and not be as shocked at my behavior as I was with years prior to that.

Wow man I was going to say 25 too!

However, I've always been told I was mature even since I was a teenager. I guess that's the price paid for being forced to grow up at a young age. I always hungout with people who were/are 5-10, even 20-30 years older than me.
 
^ Yea man, and most 25-30yr olds I know act pretty much the same, which is further evidence for that being the age of maturity. Also most people have a year or two in 'the real world' by that time, which kinda forces you to grow up. 21-24 yr olds also act similar, but I wouldn't consider it being mature since most people are getting so wrecked during that time period that it halts maturity. But once you find yourself saying 'I can't party like I used to' or 'I'm too old for that now' then you are likely mature.
 
What about finding yourself saying "I can't party like I used to (shoot up)" or "I'm too old for that now (I have things to live for and all of that time wasted) ?

Funny to type this, but actually thinking seriously about the future and planning for a better outcome, so like quitting cigarettes for one.
 
I agree with most everyone..
it varies from person to person..

**When you start asking questions instead of doing all talking.

**When you realize you hardly know anything...

**When you've finally realized how grey those black and white lines
used to be.

**When you learn to care for somebody else more than yourself..

The age range for when this happens is too wide to pinpoint an answer..

Some of us were forced to do it way too early....
others never even attempt it.

I think it's a choice you make tbh.

^^^Yeah, basically.

I think being mature is different from growing up completely. One can be responsible, be a parent, pay the bills, etc. and still not be completely grown up. If you grow up completely then you have killed your inner child, which is something that I hope that never happens to me. Being playful is essential for happiness.

Disagree. I always question those who say they are "too old" for whatever it may be, whether dancing, or something else. Usually I hear those words from people who are younger than me. I hardly think of those people as more "mature" than me.

Yeah, I definitely get more tired and sore from dancing all night but I will never be "too old". The only time I will be too old is when I am dead.
 
^ I kinda meant it in a "I'm too old to stay up until 6am blowing lines of coke with a bunch of teenagers" kinda way. So I didn't mean it in a physical sense, like with dancing or riding a bike or something, I meant it in a mental sense.
 
I'm surprised that there aren't more people chiming in about how drastic of a shift they felt around age 25. I definitely felt it, and it seems to be pretty common among people I talk to about this topic.
 
Well, ive always been "more mature" than most people my age, leading to self-isolation and an antisocial personality. This (blue light) is my social event of the week. And I'm quite happy that way. I don't talk when there's nothing to say, I don't act cruel just for the hell of it, I would give up everything for my fiancee who holds me accountable for my actions, such as cheating, and has helped me grow up and see the world in terms of how my actions affect others. Right now, my early twenties feel like my mid 40s. But I still joke around and play, thanks to my fiancee, and I have a whole imaginary world (I call it the novel I'm writing, but I've never actually written anything) that I envision in my head to keep myself entertained. I love going to sleep just to dream. Someone said would you prefer imagination, sex, knowledge or influence. I have imagination without ignoring reality, sex wihtout hurting the man I love (by cheating to have more sex), I seek knowledge to satisfy curiosity and inspire me, and I don't care about influence because that would mean dominating people and power plays, which I don't do. I think I'm pretty mature for my age, but it's like the little girl that thinks she's a "big girl". You always think you're bigger or mature until you actually ARE more mature and look back.
Yet my fiancee is in his mid 40s and acts and feels like he's a teenager. So maturity is completely individual.
 
Maturity is something that you never think about once you are there. I believe genuine maturity must have more than 2 dozen years worth of living. Closer to three and four decades. Time is the only way genuine maturity can be created in a life. I say that because I am 53 and about every 10 years or so, I look back and see some positive things I'm glad I did, and see some mistakes that make me think I must have been brain damaged during bad parts.

The experiences we have as we go through time add up. I am 53. I have stories to tell. I've seen more than I ever imagined I would. Ive fucked up egregiously and I've shown love and acceptance too. The only thing that made me mature was the passing of time. Some seniors can be old fucktards though but some find the peace of the moment and comfort in the lessons learned during the difficulties. I would not go back to any other age unless I could take the wisdom time has given me in moments of pain with me.
