so i'm planning on getting my first tat soon
my first plan was to get the quote "pain is inevitable but misery is optional" but now i'm hopeful to think of an image to go along with it

i'm gonna have "pain is inevitable" be in russian and the other half in english, because of i'm slavic origin but have lived in america 13 of my 17 years

so anything to do with russian culture would be extremely helpful

themes to go with the quote i've come up with are only optimism, the bright side, rebirth (eh)

i'm just looking for ideas to spitball with, if i can't think of anything i'll just go with the quote

p.s. things such as ancients symbols for pain or misery or anything that agrees with the quote would be very helpful

I'm going to try this thread over in Words as it is the first artsy forum that comes to mind. Feel free to hurl it back if not in line with the rules mods :).

A turtle with a hood and you can see him smiling with a sunrise coming over his shell that chases away the ghouls

Don't just get the quote, you GOTTA put artwork with it, for it to be cool anyway. I think you shouldn't get the tat right away if you can't think of an image. I think it's so dumb seeing all these people with the same kind of font with their colorless little bumper-sticker quotes on their inner arm. Do it for the sake of anti-lameness. Remember, you're carving this into you, make it something mindblowing.

Just close your eyes and picture something, anything, other than the phrase "I can't think of anything" and you should be fine. Just whatever you do, don't believe that you can't think of anything. Don't even think of those words at all. They have no place here.

i can see why you chose a turtle, but i'm not really feeling a turtle

however u did give me a good idea

a vampire with the rising sun, to show how the life suckers always come around like the vampire at night and the sun to show the optimism that comes with every painful experience

Yeah! That's the spirit. And just think how much cooler the font can be when you have it intertwined with an image.
I like that idea.

^If I were a mod (hint hint ;)) I'd have moved this to SO by now seeing as if you're looking for a multitude of opinions it's hard to find them in this ol' corner of Bluelight. Actually, isn't there already a tattoo thread in there?

Anyway, and I'm just spitballing here, when I think of things that endure pain, I think of Anvils, which wear down hammers while never getting worn out themselves; The moon, with all it's pock marks from asteroid collisions yet still shines beautifully; A castle wall? that might connote something too closed off, but given your slavic roots what if you have some cool architecture in that vein? Like those round, pear-shaped structures that come to a point on the top of a Cathedral.
I just read that Oak Trees are a common symbol in slavic culture. There's this forum that I just found: http://www.slavorum.com/index.php?topic=126.0 Try navigating that site for a bit if you haven't found it already, you might see something in there.
Maybe a vampire running from the sun that's peeking through an oak tree? Is there a way to get beams of light in tattoo form? Like how you see beams coming through the leaves of the trees? What if the shadow of the light through the trees formed the text! Or maybe the pattern of light itself formed the quote, so that the words are glowing and intense. Or maybe the branches of an oak tree forms the text! I love this brainstorming.
haha i can't wait to see what you finally come up with.
I'd be very happy to see it when it's done.

You should develop your ideas for tatts over several years so you don't get one that would end up dated (for you or others seeing it)

remember: a tattoo is a piece of artwork for you and you only... it is yours to enjoy, love, and be proud of. Don't get something just for the sake of getting inked. Wait a while and make sure it will stand up to your own changing ideas and desires.

Heyaa

I agree with muvolution. Designing a tattoo requires a lot of soul searching.. aesthetics are secondary to the meaning behind the art. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone but you. plus, I'm sure you chose that quote for a reason.
but unless those words are part of the reason, I think Coffeedrinker has a point.. Frankly I think the most retarded tattoos are those that have no real story behind them. (i.e. "I got it because it looks cool")

anws, have you decided where you're gonna place the tattoo?
and how big is it going to be?
colour or b&w?

once you know your "canvas", it'll be much easier to work on the design from there.

you'd probably have to know who the person is for this one to be really meaningful, so in that sense it probably isnt the best fit for you... but in terms of the msg your trying to achieve i personally think it's perfect:
