This is no surprise to me.

I grew up and am from a major city in the NE where there's A LOT of heroin and young people, and people of all ages have been into it for decades. I can think of at least 20 people I grew up with as a kid, teenager, or very young adult who got into it. Most got sober, but some did OD on it or other opiates. I am glad I am still alive, and never used it.

New Face of Heroin Is Young, White and Suburban, Study Finds
BY JONEL ALECCIA
When “Glee” TV star Cory Monteith died last year at age 31 after a heroin overdose, the tragedy was underscored by an element of disbelief.

He was young, affluent and white — the exact opposite of the stereotype of an inner-city user. Drug abuse experts had to expend considerable effort to explain that, in fact, Monteith was the new face of heroin.

“He is what a heroin user looks like,” Caleb Banta-Green, a University of Washington research scientist who specializes in drug abuse, emphasized at the time.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's overdose death brought another wave of shock.

Now comes a new analysis, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, which confirms that there’s been a dramatic shift in the demographics of heroin use in the United States.

In the 1960s, the typical user was an inner-city teenager, likely as not a minority, whose habit started with heroin. Fifty years later, new heroin users in America are more likely to be white suburban men and women in their 20s who get hooked on prescription opiates and then turn to heroin because it’s cheaper and easier to get.

Same recycled material I've been reading for the past year. It's crazy how many of these articles I've read where the writer thinks they are breaking news that nobody has heard anything about and is going to change the way people look at this issue.

It seems obvious to us, but there are TONS of people who couldn't even tell you what heroin is as in what drug class or what other drugs are like it. Most probably don't even realize they have pretty much shot up before if they had some sort of surgery/birth, etc.

Basically what this article is hinting at is:

"we've always known that people have done heroin, but now young white kids are doing it so it is a problem. Oh and we also knowingly created this problem and also make money when you try and quit heroin too"

or, to quote Dave Chappelle

"gotcha bitch!"

You got a point. I still feel as though if you haven't been exposed/effected directly to the nation's growing opiate epidemic, then you're an outlier.

It's funny to me that the government and society is just now realizing that cracking down on prescription pills would lead to a heroin epidimic. I was flipping channels in rehab a few weeks ago and caught a few minutes of the senate select committee on health talking about the opiate "epidemic". These senators where shocked that as prescription availability dropped heroin use went up proportionally. I can vividly remember many bluelighters predicting this outcome 4-5 years ago. Our government has no understanding of cause and effect apperantly.

Yeah I'm not sure which is more absurd, the fact that they're shocked by the heroin epidemic as a result of cracking down on pills, or the whole ''white kids are dying now so we gotta do something about it!'' vibe.

Yeh because no one cared if people did heroin before?
So just because they're white we shouldn't care if they're dying? fuck outta here with that reverse racism shit.

Oh, I think we should care. I just find this whole recycled "heroin is spreading to the middle class" story rather tiresome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_racism

the term is in use and reverse discrimination is certainly in the dictionary so yeh racism is a form of discrimination so I guess it kinda exists.
Fuck the semantics you get the point . Can't we all just along/die of heroin.

The term suggest that discrimination is normally done by white people which is why I don't like it. I know what you mean though.

None the less...

Thats bullshit. Everyone discriminates evenly in actual reality.

Now...

As an rocovering and still using opiate addict, I must say as soon as I go into heroin years ago, I got bitched out...

But, pills were ok... WTF

The powder i got off the street was indeed phenom...

But, it takes me litterally a fistfuls of 10mg hydrocodone to get to that point...
