Addiction involves
1 psychosocial disruption
2 accelerated use
3 inappropriate use
4 drug seeking behavior.
This is the CLINICAL definition used by the medical community. If all of these criteria are met, you can consider yourself an addict. Otherwise, you're just a "responsible psychoactive substance user".
Just a stray thought ;)

I would guess that choosing to use cocaine starting at 11:00 p.m. when you have to work at 7:00 a.m. would be inappropriate use. Or using speed right before lunch with your family. Or weed shortly before performing surgery.

yes, most ppl have the basic concept of whats inappropriate but what is APPROPRIATE?
would it be appropriate to 'seek out' a stimulant to help study for an exam where failure means the end, and the stimulant was repeatedly used to cause a state of wakefulness, etc etc
or would it be more appropriate to administer high doses of a tranquilizer to a woman whose only complaint was ' i get nervous a lot' which resulted in a need for more, and extended use etc etc.
who decided whats appropriate?

Nope. I've never been addicted to a drug.
If I didn't have such a strong interest in health, I would LOVE to be a meth addict. I'd be super thin and very productive...but I simply can't do it because of health issues.
If I tried at all, and I had access to it, I think I would be a regular ketamine user.

I for one am a ADDICT.. my favorites, benzos, opiates, and KETAMINE(my new found friend). This is JUST MY OPINION, but I think many people on this board and abroad are in denial about their drug use.
Compared to the average "normal" person we would all be looked upon as "junkies", "potheads" and so on. I admit I am addicted to drugs, but knowing this puts me at ease some how? I know myself now better now than ever before useing drugs.
Great topic by the way! :)
Again, no offense to anyone.

I'm an addict, no doubt about it. By that definition or by my own opinion.
But I'm sorry, I think a "responsible user" is someone truly ignorant as to what they're actually doing, someone who is either immature or doesn't have the life experience to understand the full ramifications of their actions.

I'm not addicted. I can stop anytime I want to. I just don't ever want to...

Pyar - by comparison, then, appropriate use would be when:
1 - There is nothing pending that requires your sober attention.
2 - The likelihood of discovery by those whom you wish the use to be secret from is low.
