Are you a blood donor?

and u know wat it does to ur babies if u have o- blood??? it treats the embryo as a virus and tries to attack it! nasty. so me and my bro r lucky to be here!

Not necessarily. This only occurs in 2nd and subsequent babies and only when the blood types are conflicting. For example, if your mum carried an A+ baby after her first baby, her body would treat the baby as a virus. If she was carrying an A- baby, though, the baby would be safe because the blood types don't conflict (they're both negative). Mothers who carry babies with conflicting blood types like that are given a shot of a medication called RhoGAM at about 28 weeks into the pregnancy, and again within a couple of days after the birth of the baby. It's called RH factor incompatibility.

Just thought I'd add that in, because we're talking about blood.

As a side note, I'm O+, how boring. I've never donated blood because.. I dunno actually. My Dad's A+ and he's donated blood at least 60 times - he got a nifty silver dagger-looking letter opener after the 50th time. Perfect for drawing blood.

I read in the paper the other day that our blood stocks are at critically low levels, so I thought I'd lend a helping hand and give blood next week.

Does anyone else here give blood? Do you do it regularly?

Just out of interest.

i certainly am, despite my huge fear of needles, so hooray for me. apparently my blood type's really low, so i'll go in next week i think...

btw, i'm pretty sure there's already another thread on this...so wave goodbye to this i'd say :)

I'm getting in a reply before it's gets locked!

I'm a donor :) Fastest donating time so far is 5.28 :) Beat everyone in my office LOL!

My next donation isn't until 11 July though ... there is a 10 week period you have to wait between donations ;)

not allowed too

I am not allowed to donate blood as I have a mosquito virus that is in there and won't go away...

Plus needles make me faint BUT I could handle that if they actually wanted any of my blood.

Crap! I did a search for "blood donor". Guess I should have used more general terms before I started a thread. Sorry.

Thanks for the replies though :)

People with Blood types A and B have antigens A and B respectively on their blood cells. AB have both. O have neither.
On an O person receiving A, B or AB, their immune system would immediately start on destroying the unrecognised invader.
An A person would respond likewise to a blood sample with B antigens (B or AB), as would a B person to A/AB.
AB blood types can receive any blood seeing as their body already is accustomed to both A and B antigens

How the Rhesus classification works, I'm not sure, although I assume its similar, or Identical to the ABO system. +ve people have the Rhesus antigen active, rh -ve don't. So you should be able to feed + people either blood, and -ve only -ve.

Its also nice to know that A and B are codominant (hence the AB genotype) which means all us O blood type people are gonna be superceded :(

I have massive respect for all you doners out there. C you at parramatta blood bank on 2nd July about midday, thats my next drainage.

Hey l'd do it just for those little jellybean packets.

Was speaking to one of the nurses about O- since thats what l have and aparently thats the blood all the emergency services carry which is why it runs low now and then.

Next time you donate drag a couple of friends a long.

Last year I was going to donate blood, but seeing as though I got a tattoo and a tongue piercing I thought it was best to wait a little while.

Now I've found out where I can get it done I'll probably head down there next week or the week after. I don't like needles, but seeing as though it's for a good cause I'm sure I can handle it. :)

I used to donate blood until I was considered a risk because I began having a relationship with someone who has had sex with other men and IVs. I then I started IVing myself.

I feel a bit guilty now, because I have decided that I dont want to be an IV drug user anymore and my blood is useless to them.

I was under the impression that you could not use any drugs and donate blood, regardless of whether or not you IV, because the nurse told me that she wouldn't allow me to donate blood because I had had a few E's in the past, or maybe I had a prejudiced nurse, because she gave me that "marijuana is a gateway drug" rant.

doesnt the fact that most of you have a residue of various drugs concern you about blood donation. i have alwasy thought about it, but ill be honest, its more out of laziness than the above reason that i dont donate.
im really concious of my body, and considering its state of health, which is fairly unablance im not sure it can handle blood being taken out of it on a regualr basis.

I admire people who donate blood so so much. Reading this thread really makes me feel guilty. I am a self confessed (and selfish) chicken when it comes to needle. I will faint or throw up at the sight of it. My mum and my brother both give blood as regularly as possible.... fark I feel bad but I just can't do it. If anyone has a cure for fear of needles let me know!
