Are you a blood donor?

I have done it enough times to warrant my nifty little keyring (something like 3 times hehe).

I enjoy going. The needle and initial fingerprick suck but i get a bit of a rush out of it. Add to that the surreal feeling that washes over me as im sitting there staring at a bag fill up with my blood..Its all good.

Then you get to sit down and enjoy a snack while feeling all good for doing something to help.

Other donators, dont deny it. There is that air of superiority in that Red Cross chillout room ;) you look over...seea bandage on the persons arm. Nod. Smile. Yeah. We are good people.

All up anything that does all of that for me while still helping people has to be a good thing. If only it didnt make me woozy for days after I would go more frequently.

^^ I have always felt ashamed of my mere O+

Its common.... its O.....

See automatically your profile rose a notch when i saw that A+.

Gimme it

:)

I have tried to give blood sooooo many times, but everytime i go to sign up, i can't...

the first time i was too young...

the second time i was going to be overseas...

the third time i had been overseas at the wrong time and in the wrong place...

the fourth time was int he middle of one of my HSC exams...

since then i have lost touch with where and when it's on, other wise i would...

anyone in sydney know where icould find out about giving blood in my area?

ALso, apparently, if you have body piercings then you can't give blood for a certain amount of time either? Is this true or have i just been fooled by someone?

How Tattoos & Piercings Affect your Ability to Donate Blood Plasma

Donating blood plasma has always been a noble pursuit to help those in need. Since last September, there has been an upsurge in blood donations, as the need has become more emphasized and more empathized. But if you've had a tattoo or piercing within the last year, you will more than likely be turned away from any blood bank.

When you go to a blood bank to give plasma, they ask you a series of questions to determine if you are eligible to donate. Obviously, they don't want to risk accepting contaminated blood, so they will ask about your sexual history, current health status and other related questions, including whether or not you have gotten a tattoo or piercing within the last 12 months.
All blood that is donated is screened for disease such as HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis and other common blood-born ailments. However, it goes without saying that it is a waste of the blood bank's and the donor's time to harvest blood that is tainted and thus worthless.

So, in order to avoid wasted time, they ask these questions to screen the potential donor. And although even I would be quick to say that tattooing and piercing are much safer than some medical professionals like to indicate, there is still always a chance of getting and carrying a disease unknowingly from a tattoo or piercing. Especially Hepatitis, which has been the object of many heated arguments and stringent regulations.
If you should happen to contract a disease from a tattoo or piercing, it should show up in a screening after 12 months, which is the reason for the waiting period. Yes, maybe it's a little over-precautious, but would you want to be the one on the receiving end of dirty blood? If there is even a chance, it is better to be safe than sorry.

So, if body art and blood donation are both important to you, you have a very important decision to make. Sacrificing your own desires for the benefit of others is always commendable. If that is your desire, you might have to put the tattoo or piercing off for a while. On the other hand, it doesn't make you selfish to decide in favor of body art, as long as you don't forget that helping others will always provide you with even more satisfaction; and there are certainly other ways that you can be of assistance to those in need. So, if you can't give your blood, enjoy your art and reach out to someone with your time and your love instead.

Although the Blood Bank are short in every blood type, apparently they are really short on A- and (for obvious reasons) O type blood. This is disheartening as I have A- blood, but I am not allowed to donate blood. Reason... I was in the UK in 1986 for a short period of time and because of the whole BSE issue, I am unable to do it.

:( So disappointed. :(

I'm A positive - the second most common and yes I donate every 10 or 11 weeks (whatever the limit is)...

I had a race with a workmate last time! Pumped out my half a litre in 5 minutes and 27 seconds ... the nurse almost had a pink fit!

Beat that :)

I'm kinda spewing I'm not allowed to donate blood. I like needles but the thought of them sucking out half a litre or wtf of blood makes me feel a little sick.

I'm up for organ donation if I die untimely, will having IVed drugs stop me from doing that too? I was clean last time I had a test and don't share works.

i give blood, and it makes me happy, 'cos i'm so so so scared of needles it's not funny. so afterwards, it's always a bit of an achievement. i got a keyring too, but lost it somewhere :\

^^^ you have to give blood a certain number of times before you get one.

I got mine on my 2nd time.

Double 0 Negative

Doesnt that mean that I can accept anyones blood type if need be?

Oh well.Im proud of my blood.
I'd give if I had to. 12 bucks and a free cookie, what a country.
*Thump*

I gave blood 6 months after getting my tattoo. I marked it down and told the lady when/where I got it and she let me give blood anyhow.

Raving Loony - yeah they're always short on A+ blood too, I really hate the fact that I'm undergoing treatment and can't give blood because they keep sending me letters and ringing to see if i can go give it and I keep having to say no. :(

i dont know shoelace.
my mum's o- and that means she can donate, and anyone can accept her blood, but she can only recieve o-

and u know wat it does to ur babies if u have o- blood??? it treats the embryo as a virus and tries to attack it! nasty. so me and my bro r lucky to be here!

as for me i have no idea wat blood type i am. maybe i should get a test. do u reckon theres a chance i'm o- too? my dad is a+ and so is my bro...so who knows?

^^^ that's not quite correct.

People with O blood type can only receive O blood type
People with A can receive A and O but not B or AB
People with B can receive B and O but not A or AB
People with AB can receive AB and O (and i'm not entirely sure if they can receive A & B or not - i never had to find out)

O is the universal donor because everybody can accept O blood which is why they're often in shortage because unless they can ask you your blood type at the scene of an accident they have to use O so your body doesn't attack the transfusion it needs.

The reason you can't accept the other blood types is that your blood has anti-bodies against it, it does treat it like a virus or disease and starts attacking it.

My mum has O+ blood, my dad has A+ I have A+ one sister has O+ and the other has A+.

What happens if your child has a blood type that you have anti-bodies against (i.e. my mum having me) her blood tries to attack the childs blood.

My mother had a hard pregnancy with me and an easy one with my middle sister because she was of the same blood type and her body recognised it as a friend, after she had my youngest sister which was another extremely hard pregnancy she had to have her tubes tied because her doctor told her that if she had any more of my fathers children it would be extremely dangerous for her.

(babydoc will correct me if i'm wrong here i'm sure :) but i'm pretty sure that's all as I recall my doctor saying.)

aaah now i get it. sorta makes sense now cos there wasnt any probs with me wen mum was pregnant with me but cos my bro is a+ he was 'attacked'. cos wen he was born his feet were like a monkey's and they had to be put in plaster to fix.

then mum fell pregnant a bit after that and she had a miscarriage for the same reason. lucky the baby was an accident so it wasnt that major. i dont think. at the time, another kid was the last thing we could handle!
