Are elicit drugs used by some in a medicinal sense?

By medicinal I mean, some patients are prescribed drugs and require them to function, such as for depression or ADHD.

Living would be almost intolerable without them.

Most elicit drugs are reputed as party drugs, cocaine, stimulants, psychedelics.

Using them is largely intended to facilitate having a good time, party, not necessarily cause they need them, but rather make it to the end of the day.

Currently I'm taking a daily dose of a stimulant and painkiller combination, both of which ultimately act on dopamine and that's the reason I need to use them.

Without them I'm miserable.

I'd love to take a break from the stimulant or use it with less frequency as of course its effects are better when used infrequently, but that's just not possible at the moment and daily use is required (which is approved by my doctor).

But it gets me to thinking, if my doctor wasn't scripting me these each month, I could easily see how I might default to using an elicit and much more destructive drug to just make life more tolerable.

I'm quite confident it's just a phase as I've had this phases in the past, times of higher stress levels and meds like this simply ease the process.

But there was a comment in another thread as to how anyone uses meth daily and lives a functional life, mentioning the user smokes almost 3.5 grams meth daily, has for some times, and requires it to function.

It makes you wonder are dopamine boosting drugs (direct or indirect), or even psychedelics, simply necessary for some men and women to live their life under the circumstances they find themselves?
