Muscimol and related compounds have had very little research done into them.
They are GABA agonists like alcohol, but as muscimol itself shows, they don't necessarily exhibit typical GABA activity.
Could it be possible for a chemical to have MDMA's effects without draining serotonin? Like something which produces serotonin instead of using your own?
And using synthetic serotonin is probably pointless because it can't get anywhere apparently - there are barriers like the BBB keeping such compounds in their resp. sections of the body so it would do little more than cause some peripheral effects before you excrete it.
