Apple 'won't repair machines belonging to smokers'

It's not an issue of whether they should be smoking or not. It's how smoking may affect the health of the people coming in contact with the soiled equipment. Is it a hazard? I don't know, but before they make this policy, I think it is their burden to provide proof that this is hazardous. If not, well, people are certainly within their right to complain, boycott, etc.

And even if it is a health hazard, all Apple has to do is charge a fee for cleaning and whatever protective equipment(gloves, cheap paper face mask) their technicians may have to use.

Maybe they should also check the equipment they're repairing for bacteria, viruses, fungi, body fluids, etc.

This can't be serious, have they ever thought about using gloves? Isopropyl alcohol? Have they ever heard of stop being such a bitch?

Anyway, if it is real I'll just feel proud for disliking Apple already for many years for their stupid inflexible products and invasive software; and I'm not even mentioning the irritating mindless cult surrounding it.

People shouldn't be smoking anyway.

Who the fuck are you to decide whether people should be smoking? Hypocritical much? I mean if you're not a drug user why would you be on this board.

So what is Apples policy on pet owners? You wouldn't believe how much pet hair and dander can collect in places, and many people are allergic.

What about someone that eats lots of peanuts and peanut butter, I bet their Ipc could give an allergic individual a bad reaction.

haha brilliant scam. Everyone knows smoke kills computers, they're just trying to save a ton of money with a bullshit health excuse.

Another ludicrous excuse to squeeze more $ out of the commoners.

US economy close to collapsing.

smoke clogs up electrical fans at a ridiculous rate according to a friend of mine who is a nightclub technician- its to do with frequency of callouts and maintenace not employee health- but if it skins the cat then they will go with that!

This is absurd. They make nicotine sound like a radioactive substance. I will say though as a company they have the right to do this as long as it's clearly stated that it will void the warranty if "nicotine residue" is found. I own apple stock, Im gonna vote at the next shareholder meeting ;).

Uh. Dude. Tobacco smoke IS a highly radioactive substance. It contains radioactive isotopes of lead and polonium at levels that are probably responsible for the carcinogenicity of smoking tobacco.

that is the most insane thing i have ever heard... scam artists.

when are people going to realize that certain things just cross the line. this being one of them.

If that's the real reason then Apple techs = pansies. But I suspect Apple is just looking for short term ways to save money. But in the long run this will cost them new sales.

People work on nasty shit all the time. What about the mechanic that repairs your car, or the guy that pumps out your septic tank?

Dude Man can see where this world is headed - dystopia.

Emperorofusa I am curious what makes you say "people shouldn't be smoking anyway"? You may not like smoking but why the fuck should an adult not be able to put whatever they damn well please into their own bodies?

You raise some fair points in regards to the issue at hand but that doesn't mean that people shouldn't be smoking at all. Also even if what you say is true the burden is on Apple to prove that this is actually a health hazard for their employees to work on if they want to void a warranty.

Their employers or the manufacturers of whatever nasty shit caused long-term health problems can usually be held liable for something like that. Over the years, it's become more and more illegal to employ people to work with 'nasty shit'. In the case of lung cancer from tobacco smoke exposure, wearing gloves while fixing the laptop won't provide any legal safety cover like wearing gloves while changing septic tanks will. These techs ought to be wearing masks while they open the laptops if they're worried though.
