Nicotine residue harms repair staff

Apple is reportedly refusing to repair machines belonging to smokers because residue from cigarettes seeps into machines and creates a health risk for those fixing the Mac.

The Consumerist website claims it has received reports from two Mac users saing that Apple repair centres in the US have declined to fix machines under Applecare warranties, claiming that have been voided due to second-hand smoke.

"They informed me that his computer can't be worked on because it's contaminated," said one of the website's readers called Ruth.

"When I asked for an explanation, she said he's a smoker and it's contaminated with cigarette smoke which they consider a bio-hazard! I checked my Applecare warranty and it says nothing about not honouring warranties if the owner is a smoker."

Both readers took the issue up with Apple's head office, but were still denied the reapairs under their warranty.

"[Apple did] advise me that nicotine is on OSHA's list of hazardous substances and Apple would not require an employee to repair anything deemed hazardous to their health," added Ruth.

Apple was unable for comment on the story.

What a fucking complete joke! As if that poses any real health risk to anyone and even if it did they should have a disclaimer informing smokers that if they purchase apple products the warranty is void. What fucking crooks.

Unbelievable! Just when I thought the "tobacco police" couldn't get any worse.

Do they truely believe that smoke residue on a computer will endanger their staff's health? 8)

What the cocking fuck?!?!

.... Holy lizard-bodied, acid tongue, idiotic cocksplash.... :|

This is one of the most outrageous and pathetic things I've read. And I thought the "3rd hand smoke" thing was ridiculous :p :|:X:!:o

Who didn't see this coming? Just another step on the road to tobacco prohibition, I bet the justice system is salivating at the fines it will be able to collect, and you can bet private prisons are gonna love the money.

Apple corporate would never pull this stunt if they didn't think there would be no public backlash, they have obviously thought it over and realized they can fuck over 20% of Mac owners with no public backlash.

Everyone knows its laughable to think you can be exposed to nicotine from working on a computer.

Fuck, I wonder if this applies to iPods as well.

No doubt mine is covered with smoke residue... and not just tobacco smoke, either!

i dont smoke cigarettes at all but i smoke A LOT of pot.... so much that when im in a public place i sometimes get whiffs of marijuana coming from my laptop, ive had to send it in a couple times for warranty repairs and never had a problem.... my laptop also has bubblehash/weed caked on the outside....never said a word about it

This is absurd. They make nicotine sound like a radioactive substance. I will say though as a company they have the right to do this as long as it's clearly stated that it will void the warranty if "nicotine residue" is found. I own apple stock, Im gonna vote at the next shareholder meeting ;).

It is really hard to believe. In fact, I won't believe it until I see something from Apple stating their viewpoint.
It doesn't make sense that smokers' computers would be considered a health hazard, and it doesn't make sense that they would isolate so many clients.
I maintain my skepticism as to whether this is real.

Too funny aye that's why I had to post it!! What's the world coming to - next they will be attacking the overweight race and saying we can't fix your lap tops because there is too much greese and food stains on the keys !! WTF all the frikken way!!

I RARELY SMOKE TABACOO UNLES OUT OF A HOOKA BUT I FIND THIS COMPLETLY ABSURD.
IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT PEOPLE NOT ONLY IN AMERICA BUT ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE ALLOWING GOVERNMENTS TO CONTROLL MORE AND MORE WHAT WE ARE AND ARE NOT ALOUD TO DO WITH OUR BODIES OR IN THE PRIVACY OF OUR OWN HOMES.
I ACTUALLY SAW ABOUT 5 OR 6 YEARS AGO A HIGH RANKJING DEA AGENT IN AN INTERVEIW ON A SHOW ABOUT ILLEGAL DRUGS.. AND HE BLATANTLY (VERY BLATANTLY) STATED THAT NOT ONLY SHOULD ALCOHOL BE BANNED, THAT ANY SUBSTANCE THAT INTOXICATES SHOULD ANBD THAT HE SUPPORTED AND BELIEVED THAT WITH IN OUR LIFE TIME AND PROBALLY WITH 15 YEARS TABACO WOULD BE ILLEGAL. AT THE TIME I THOUGHT IT WAS AN IMPOSSIBLE FALACY OF SOME OVERLY RIGHTOUS FUCK WITH GRANDIOUS SCHEMES OF SCONTROLLING THE GENERAL PUBLIC IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE BUT SADLY IT APEARS THAT LIKE CADDLE WE ARE FALLING INTO LINE AND OUR FREEDOMS ARE BEING SLAUGHTERED AND WE ARE FED THE BULLSHIT OF OUR GROUND UP HOPES AND DREAMS FOR FREEDOM AND INDIVUALITY.

WITH EACH LAW LIMITING OUR BEHAVIOR..WITH EACH SUBSTANCE THAT THEY DISALLOW FOR GENERAL USE..WITH EACH PASSING MOMENT.. WE FALL DEEPER INTO THIS DISMAL FUTURE WHERE IT ALL SPIRALS DEEPER INTO LOSS OF FREEDOM. THERE IS NO END IN SIGHT. WHO KNOWS?SOON THEY WILL BAN US FROM THINKING THOUGHTS THEY DONT APPROVE OF AND WHO KNOWS HOW FAR THEY WILL TAKE IT.. LABOTOMIES?FORCED MEDICATION?DEATH PENALTIES?MORE INCERAERATION?EXILE?(AND MORE AND MORE REASONS). SOON THE NAZI REGIME WILL SEEM LIKE A SOFTCORE DREAM COMPARED TO WHAT SEEMS TO BE INSTORE FOR US.

They should have commercial for PC with the mac guy mac the pc guy. And the mac guy kills himself for being a condsending judgemental asshole wen the pC guys tells him that all of the mac costumers have realized the hypocrisy in siding with this ridicolous anti tobacco bandwagon.

do you mean people that did coca cola. lol
cause on that note who knows they might start saying that those that consume certain things in their diet whether liquid or solid cause something to be screted through the skin and damage the electronics

I also find it absurd but if one is militantly anti-tobacco, then I could understand it...I'd say that this sort of thing will start cropping up more and more as attitudes change, especially now we're in the 21st century.

With limited resources, people are going to have to accept greater personal accountablity, so I can also understand the notion that state-subsidized health services might express disapproval towards patients who are clearly choosing to live in self-destructive ways, whether it be from drink, drugs, smoking or overeating. They have to prioritise, especially in times of recession and government deficits. Resouces are not unlimited, sadly.

Ifyou're rich and can go private, then that's different but I'd still expect a telling off from my doctor if I was being obviously self-destructive. If I've got hypertension, I need to lose weight, cut down the salt, etc. If I abuse drugs and drink too much, then why on Hell should I be entitled to a liver or kidney transplant, especially when organs are scarce? It's just common sense. Of course, not all illness can be avoided but I'm arguing that a lot of it can be and that taking personal accountability if very important.

I can appreciate that it's a two-way street and that we as individuals have a moral and civic responsibility to look after our own health and that we can't really complain if doctors start to question treating illnesses for free when they were largely brought on by irresponsible and self-destructive lifestyles.

But in saying all that, I'm playing devil's advocate to a degree. I can see both sides but do feel that health & safety is getting ridiculous. But attitudes are obviously shifting so beware and think twice, whatever you decide to do.

I have tried to fix computers for people who chain smoke or just smoke way too much. It's disgusting. The tar and everything deposits itself in the cooling systems, fans, gets everywhere. It's damned impossible to scrape off, smells like complete shit, and I really doubt that being near the stuff inhaling it is good for one's health.

I flat out refuse to fix PCs for people that smoke if crap has deposited and caked within the tower. I think Apple is in the right here. Imagine if you sprayed sticky fruit juice inside of your computer and then threw a bunch of ash into it and let it dry. That's what repair people have to deal with when it comes to some people who smoke. Besides, letting your tower get all gunked up like that will probably void your warranty no matter which company you are dealing with. Not only that, but the shit from the cigarette smoke could actually be a health hazard.

I have known Sony and Microsoft to enforce a similar policy with their gaming consoles. People shouldn't be smoking anyway.
