anyone used melatonin and 5 htp?

whats better for raising serotonin? and which is better for sleep?


edit: whats the most melatonin you've taken? any side effects?

I think that melatonin is the best OTC sleep aid that you can get. it's way better than stuff like Tylenol PM, which does nothing for me. anti-histamines are good for sleeping but they make me wake up far too groggy the next day.

5-htp is always good to have around after a night of MDMA. sometimes I will find myself taking it if I'm not in a good mood. I think it helps out a little. I never noticed any drowsy affects with 5-htp, but I think it affects everyone quite differently

5htp i think was placebo for me, one day i'd feel like i was in a better mood, then another it didn't do anything.
 
They both work surprisingly good. Anyone who claims they "blow" are comparing them to the more powerful psychoactives. Melatonin gives me extremely vivid dreams and so does 5-htp but causes insomnia if I take too much. They work and work well. Back when I used to smoke cannabis, taking 2mg melatonin 45 minutes before smoking would create a legal synergy unlike anything I've ever felt before. I do NOT recommend anyone who plans on operating any heavy machinery to mix melatonin and cannabis.

got a bottle one day b4 i had to go do some govt job bullshit, think they was like 2mg.... i chewed that shil like candy, like 12-14 of em within an hour.
Side effects.... maybe a minor headache nothing a little sleepy did not fix:)
ive also heard of this L-triptifine (not sure its the correct spelling) supposidly produces serotonin and malatonin, check out ur head shop, im sure its legal as coz ive seen it on display and asked about it:\

so you'd save your body a step by just buying 5HTP
you can buy it OTC but it can sometimes be pricey

Melatonin works as a sleep aid if you arre in need to reset your clock, like from a long flight ro something like that. For long term sleep problems its not your best bet but its relatively cheap.
I wouldn't use it for trying to boost seretonin, there has t be better things out there; namely 5-HTP
 
I've heard many people have bad problems with 5-HTP and alcohol though, doesn't happen to everyone, but just keep that in mind incase you do start using 5-HTP consider skipping it on nights you know you will be boozing.

You're correct yes. Supplements are the best way to get Tryptophan however as you say, 5-HTP is better. Tryptophan has an upper limit on conversion to serotonin but 5-HTP does not.

Melatonin is quite effective for me. It just gives me a very subtle feeling of somnolence and I drift off quite quickly. I definitely recommend it.
 
I found 5-htp + fish oil to be subtle but effective for mood support, and I think the best dreams I ever had were with melatonin + valerian + kava. Seems to facilitate lucid dreaming.

Melatonin has somewhat of a reverse response curve; ie. they sell it in doses ranging from 300 ug up to (iv'e seen) 10mg
but the general dose is 1mg to 3 mg
There is no gain at all from taking more than 3mg
it has been shown to be effective at doses smaller than 1mg
taking more of it does nothing but waste your money
 
anybody who says 5-HTP blows is ignorant. its a precursor to serotonin, which is 5-HT. supplementing 5-HTP makes it easier on your brain to produce serotonin

^ thats the shit i meant god my spelling sucks, and yes its available, seen it @ head shops and enquired into it, not so sure if its the kind of thing you could get from a chemist:\
 
I always thought taking like 3-5mgs of melatonin + 1-2grams Valarian Root + Vitamin b-6 to be a good combo for sleep and/or if you want to have vivid/lucid dreams... Whenever I am in the mood to have a really long and fun dream I will take this combo and it almost always produces one of those vivid dreams that you have right before you wake up and you can remember the entire dream....I love having dreams but some people with unstable mental shit going on will have super vivid nightmares I have heard/read from people that take melatonin.... but I never have had a nightmare so I wouldn't know..
