Anyone Tried Passive Ways to Keep Homes Cool in Summer?

This past summer was brutal, and even with fans running all day, the top floor of my house stayed uncomfortably hot. I’ve been trying to find ways to reduce indoor heat without depending entirely on air conditioning. One method I came across is roof heat proofing using special coatings or materials that reflect sunlight and prevent heat absorption. It sounds promising, especially for concrete roofs, but I’m not sure how effective it really is in our climate. Has anyone here tried it? I’m curious if it makes a noticeable difference or if it’s just a temporary fix.
