Anyone Ever Worked on a Winery?

Lying in the gutter, but looking at the stars.
I may have the opportunity to spend the summer living and working on a small family winery in rural Texas. It is owned by the parents of a a FOAF.

For one thing, wine is one of my passions in life. I love most every varietal of wine, trying new wines, comparing the same wine of different vintages, etc.

I worked as a bartender and in fine-dining restaurants for many years. I have traveled extensively through the wine country of California and Washington State, as well as all over Italy.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure the pay will be minimal, perhaps extraordinarily so. I would be provided room and board and the opportunity to work hands-on with one of my lifelong interests.

Plus, a couple months in the country doing hard physical labor everyday (or most days) sounds like just what I need right about now.

Has anyone ever worked at a winery? Stories? Advice?

Thanks. :)

I have lived in NY wine country all my life, and nearly every job I've had was at a winery. While I didn't work in the fields, I can tell you what the experience will be like: sun beating down on you for 8 hours a day combined with the most physically intensive work you've ever done in your life. If you aren't in shape now, you'll either get in shape, or quit your job. The wineries in NY often hire Mexicans to do the field work because it is so strenuous.

If the work is hot in New York, I can only image what it will be like in the Texas summer...

this is very useful

Wow, this is very useful.. Thanks for sharing this and hoping I could implement it too.

i have a friend who is the head winemaker at a local winery. she overseas everything from harvesting the grapes to making the wine and bottling it. before that she travelled to new zealand and australia to make wine. based on her experiences, i would say go for it :)
