Anyone else love good old RPGs? (e.g. the original Fallout games)

With all these high-end-graphics and console games being pushed out today, quality and great RPG stories have kind of suffered, with action and flashy effects taking the front seat. I love the new games but none of them can compete even in the slightest with the likes of Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, Baldur's Gate, Temple of Elemental Evil, Ultima 7 etc.

So I was wondering, anyone else play any of the greats, and if so, do you still play? Favourites? :D

My favourite of all time is Arcanum, if you haven't played it, it's worth picking up. It's $5 on Good Old Games right now and I've probably played > 1000 hours on that game, it never gets old :)

Baldurs Gate II: Shadows of Amn

Great party based RPG game, really outdated graphics but there are so many different ways to build your character and play the game, cant recommend it enough.

Diablo 1, Zelda 1 and 3, FF on the NES and SNES, all the way up to PS1 games like FF, Lunar, Star Ocean, etc etc. The elder scrolls games were and still are teh last few games I play, though I made an expection for Mass Effect 1 -2 as well as Uncharted 3. Mass Effect may be one of the most expertly crafted games I've ever played, more like an epic space opera love triangle choose-your-own-adventure-TPS-RPG.

I remember when I had free time as a child... RPGs and FPS games were my favorite games.

^ Take that and multiply it by 100x and this is why I love Arcanum and can't stop playing it :D Shame Troika closed down.

Chainer, is it bad that to this day I've never played a Zelda game? I'm not much of a console gamer really, I did enjoy FF4 and FF5 for PS1 though.

Diablo and Titan Quest are great for the action-RPG side of things, as is Guild Wars (I personally see Guild Wars as just larger scale Diablo)

Planescape Torment comes to my mind. What a fantastic game. I love the 2d rendering graphics of a solid WRPG.

Try BGII, its made by BioWare which is a company that is known to put out quality RPG's and this is the best game they've ever made IMO. The expansion, Throne of Bhall, is more of the same goodness.

I didn't even bother mentioning Bioware -

Jade Empire
KOTOR
KOTOR 2
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age
Dragon Age 2

If you want a hard-core current RPG from an unlikely source, you need to play The Witcher 2.

As for Zelda, the first one is a staple of classic RPGs. That game blew my mind when it first came out... THE ABILITY TO SAVE? WTF?

It's too bad JRPGs are almost dead now, it seems the American and Europiean hybrid RPG/TPS type games are becoming the norm for this landscape.

Personally can't get into isometric type games, call me fickle, but graphics play a big part in my ability to enjoy a game. Got pretty far in one of the early Fallout games, but was difficult for me to take seriously because of the graphics, never get really into the story or characters.

did you like/try Mass Effect or Fallout 3 by Bethesda? Or Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim?

IMO - ME has the best storyline of any video game since FF4, FF7, and FF10. It's an amazing futuristic TPS RPG. You gotta start with the first one though.

I have, what I was saying is if you like the diversity, character development, story etc from BGII, you'd absolutely adore Arcanum. It's a true gem, shame it didn't get as much publicity as some of the other big games at the time.

As far as Bioware goes, I love their old games, BG, BGII, NWN etc, not such a fan of their newer games like Dragon Age though.

You'd probably like Fallout New Vegas, it's closer to the real quality of older games, a bit more in-depth and filled out, but using the same engine as Fallout 3, in a way it's also a continuation of the Wasteland story (Fallout is the spiritual successor to Wasteland, due to the old company being bought up, if you're curious)

But anyway, back to old games, am I the only one who's played the old Ultima and Might & Magic games etc, what about Wizardry? :P

Got cuntloads of playtime racked up on both Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Last time I played I got to the point where I just gave up because I was so ridiculously high level from adventuring and barely halfway through the main storyline =D Mass Effect I played, was awesome. The 2nd one was OK, but.. meh. Felt like they made it less RPGy and more FPSy.

LET US TALK ABOUT NEW GAMES, STOP LIVING IN THE PAST
