Hi blue light, so I came across sum just weirdly tasting fet , it’s got all the qualities of the rest the stuff out there but I want to see if I can possibly make it taste and feel better by doing a wash of it , it’s almost soapy if that makes sense (the taste) , anyways any advice would really help. - decolourise it (easiest, fastest, removes trace impurities, colours, smells, but no major impurities or cuts): dissolve it in a little methanol (maybe 2-5 mL/g), heat it just near boiling (64.7C, a 70C water bath will work fine and is safest, no open flames...), add activated carbon (a few tenths of a gram max - 0.1-0.2g), stir and let cool slowly, then filter to remove carbon (rinse with a little warm methanol), and evaporate methanol slowly to yield a (hopefully nicer looking) product,
- recrystallize from acetone as recommended here (still easy, effective for most cuts and impurities): mix it with a small amount of pure acetone, heat it until the acetone just starts to boil (56C, use 60C water bath as above) then removed from heat (not everything will dissolve) and left to cool to room temp, and filtered to collect the solids, then dried gently with warm dry air
- recrystallize the freebase from petroleum ether (60-80C) (not the same as naphtha) as patent US8399677B2 suggests: dissolve fentanyl HCl in water, add sodium hydroxide solution to pH 12 or so, extract with dichloromethane, ether, maybe ethyl acetate, add drying agent (MgSO4 aka oven baked epsom salts) to the organic solvent, then evaporate, dissolve material in petroleum ether (60-80C boiling point), heat near boiling, filter, then allow it to cool slowly and collect freebase fentanyl, mix with conc. HCl and evaporate to make salt again
- or a full acid/base workup (hardest, needs most equipment, lowest yield, but will remove the most impurities): the reaction mixture (ed.or a solution of fentanyl.HCl or citrate) was diluted with dichloromethane. It was then washed with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution followed by water. The product was purified by shaking organic phase with 2 N HCl which converted all the basic compounds along with desired product in to their hydrochloride salts. The organic phase was separated and washed well with water. The non-polar fentanyl hydrochloride remained in the dichloromethane layer. Concentration of the organic phase gave crude fentanyl hydrochloride, which was recrystallized from acetone (see above) to give the pure salt as white powder.
