Any other Writers here

I'm sort of a writer; though these days, I hardly write.

I had my first short story published at 23, and have placed a steady -- if tiny -- stream of stuff in magazines, websites and a couple of books.

Why don't I write these days? It's pretty complicated. Part of it was working as an editor / writer for 3 years, for a tech website. This really hurt both my creativity and desire to write stories. Part of is I tried to write my first novel last year; had a full time schedule to write, tried to write 1500 words a day, but it just wasn't enjoyable.

These days I'm re-engaging my love for IT and programming... I think I'll write more stories in my life, and I hope to one day finish a novel, but I don't think the idea of being a full time writer appeals to me nearly as much as it used to. Or maybe I'm deceiving myself... fuck life, it is complicated.
 
I write articles for academic journals. I've also worked on 1 text book (non-parametric statistics). Right now, my boss is putting pressure on me to finish another article and it's very stressful. That's why I'm procrastinating by wasting time reading bluelight.

But for fun, I journal and write short stories which will never be published.

I think this is what ends up disengaging most writers -- the task of writing simply becomes unappealing. I spend a lot of time writing on various web forums such as this one, but my primary motivation to write comes from issues I feel strongly about.

I would love to write a good fiction piece, but I have a hard time making my characters come alive. I've also found that there's a big difference between writing for pleasure, and writing to get published. If you want to get published, there are techniques you should learn that make that process much easier, and the prospect more likely.
 
i've kept journals for years and prefer to put pen/pencil to paper rather than typing.

i have had a few things published in little local anthologies which were sold to raise money for various causes. "payment" was a few copies which was cool.

last fall i had something accepted for a quarterly that's published by a local poets and writers group. they unexpectedly paid me $25 and i smiled for weeks.

writing orders is possibly the worst writing assignment imaginable. then writing lesson plans.
