Any drugs that increase REM fraction of sleep?

^ You case maybe... though self reports of REM-sleep vs other forms of shallow sleep are essentially completely useless.
.

I was just going to say the same thing. Self report of dreams are often non-linear and non-temporal. What seems like a long dream sequence actually can occupy a very small amount of REM time. I can probably dig out some refs if you're interested...

i have studied dream states for quite some time. this was my first undergrad psych degree focus.

i am aware of the subjective error and the 40% placebo effect which has to be factored into any analysis.

yet when i say the dreamstate lasted virtually all night - this was not entirely subjective - as confirmed by REM typical EEG / fMRI patterns, recorded on the odd chance for the occasion when i was busy building MRI's.

pardon any blundering ignorance...

I've found Hemia salicifolia to have interesting effects on my dreaming...perhaps slightly similar to valerian, but with its own distinct nature (this from just smoking the material)
conflicting and confused information about sinicuichi is abundant; does anyone here know more about the chemistry of sinicuichi than what erowid and a simple google search find you?
http://www.shaman-australis.com/~auxin/heimia.html
states that the chemicals are anticholinergic...
but http://www.erowid.org/plants/sinicuichi/sinicuichi_faq.shtml
references claims of "memory improvement"... (perhaps similar to pro-ach nootropics?)
would it be wrong to assume that memory and the dreaming effects are more in line with a pro-cholinergic activity?

yea amitriptyline will send you for a loop and you fall asleep fast ......i had crazy as dreams on it and the dreams seemed so real.....i took 2 ami's once and fell asleep in 10 minutes and sleep for 15 minutes and had a dream that felt like 30 minutes...................and you need a good 6 mg of melatonin to hit rem .....theres bottles that come with 3 mg pills

I hear melatonin combined with 5-htp gives crazy dreams and a prolonged REM sleep. I'm trying this next week, when I get my hands on a batch of melatonin.

does anyone know what it is like to take melatonin with xanax?

I get crazy dreams on each by itself, so would mixing them make it even better?

I've been worried about this too. I just read an article on SSRIs on how normal dreams are REM + forebrain activity simultaneously, but on SSRIs, you will have periods of just forebrain, and then periods of REM sleep with no forebrain activity (normal dreams were REM + forebrain, or some such).

I'd have to find the article, because I probably mangled the summary.

Anyway this worried me, and could be partly why SSRI users are so tired/sluggish/distracted all the time?

I thought of a couple of things that will give you lots of crazy dreams (not sure if that's what you are after), don't really know about REM sleep per se...

5-meo-amt (which is not impossible to get), will give you lots of dreams for several nights after you take some, and they usually are extremely bizarre and generally pleasant (but occasionally very disturbing...).

You can also nibble a bit of datura leaf (available online or in your neighbor's front yard), if you wanna take a walk on the wild side. This tends to produce dreams that are rather dark or even nightmarish. Once again, the effect will generally last for a few days. Of course, you have to be somewhat careful b/c datura can be quite bad for you if you consume too much.

Please note, this is all based solely on my experience, and thus should be taken with a grain of salt!

Maybe ambien or that other new sleep drug they have commercials for with a butterfly. I'd imagine ambien would increase REM sleep because of reasons why one trips on it if doesnt fall asleep

I wonder... You trip wildly if you take Stilnox (Zolpidem) and don't fall asleep, but I've never noted any increase in dreams when I've used them. I could be wrong though. The doctor did say it "increases sleep quality", which might mean increased REM sleep.

^ Yes, I've seen that effect many times.
Benzos, and Ambein (zolpidem) block REM events (thought zolpidem and zaphelon etc do it).

They only increase sleep quality if you dn't have any sleep to start with...

Yeah, Strattera is a messed up drug. It makes me dream really fucked up and surreal dreams. But I don't think it has any benefits for sleep though.

Your probally not looking for AD solutions, but remeron when i was on it gave me 3 to 4 very vivid, crazy dreams everynight. Thats also up from 0 dreams a night (what i was getting before hand).

Calea Zacatechichi is supposed to work very well...

I've experienced with different things on dreaming and a combination that had incredible effects for me was 6mg melatonin, 1g valerian root, and 1g vitamin b6. Vitamin B6 has been shown to cause nerve damage at such high doses when used constantly, so be careful with it. I've also tried all these things in higher quanitities one night, along with 5-HTP AND Cannabis, but I didn't have any recallable dreaming that night... I'm willing to bet it was the weed

Wormwood (Artemesia Absinthum) in a dream pillow also works very well.

I have two large plants myself, and I find it works really well.

yeah but there's one tiny problem, it is (as far as i know) anti-GABAinergic and/or anti-glycinergic e.g making it harder to fall asleep.

also, i find that melatonin really slows me down for a few days after taking it, almost as bad as cannabis after a long period of abstinence.

I have done some basic experiments with artemisia vulgaris (mugwort); observing the sleeping patterns of 3 sleepers on different occasions. Believe me, of the more than 20 people I've given the fresh herb to (to use as a dream enhancer - in a pillow) not one has reported any difficulty in getting to sleep - or for that matter, failed to have profound and memorable dreams.

Even when off season the plant is still somewhat effective, although the intensity of the dreams is definitely less. I've used mugwort for years myself and find the earthy-musky aroma to be somehow connected with relaxing. I usually drift off to sleep within minutes, even if I'm not that tired. I sometimes wake often during the night, but I can usually get back to sleep fairly quickly, often continuing with the same dream. One of the most beneficial aspects is the detailed memory of dreams. In most cases I seem to be able to recall every moment of multiple dreams. Quite amazing really, especially considering I generally also wake feeling refreshed and well slept.

Whatever the actives responsible for this are ( thujone being only one of several IMO - thujone extract did not create anywhere near the same effect) the combined activities wane quickly over a few days. A large amount of dried herb is virtually ineffective when compared to the effect from a few fresh leaves.
