In my ongoing quest for things to do that isnt taking drugs, online chess is the latest idea that sprung to mind yesterday. Ive played on and off for years, never really been much good. I mean I understand the 'check that your piece is gonna be safe from all possible attacks the opponent can reply with before making a move' thing, and just doing that, and protecting your own pieces i can hold my own for a time against opponents that are much better than me, but that only gets me so far, one careless slip up and its all over. Once i completely fluked a game winning move against a high ranked player, i didnt even realise what i had done until afterwards.
The whole thinking several moves ahead thing does my head in, as there are so many things an opponent can do, and its impossible for my human brain to anticipate them all? Any tips from anyone? Do you have to learn and memorise loads of move sequences and stuff? 8(
