Any advice on making Detoxing a little more comfortable?

I've got to get opiates out of my system. I'm going cold turkey and I cannot use benzos or anything illegal to help myself with this. Any advice on making my situation more comfortable?? OTC meds, remedies, anything to make the experience not as bad. The main thing that gives me the most discomfort is the muscle aches and stiffness, back aches.

I'd drink lots of water or gatorade (I know from using meth, that dehydration causes a lot of joint/muscle pain/aches)

Eh.. jerk off a lot.. seriously.. for 10 seconds you'll feel completely fine at the orgasm.

There is a whole bunch of legal stuff that can help in opiate wd's. First loperamide (Imodium) can help a great deal for the phsyical symptoms. It is, in fact, an opioid, but one which does not significantly cross the blood-brain barrier, and so it has no psychoactive effects. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can also be helpful in treating the nausea, as well as helping with some of the anxiety and sleeplessness. Valerian root can be very helpful, I think, in producing sedation. It is GABAergic, working on GABA as benzos, barbs, or alcohol do. So, it is good with anxiety and sleeplessness, too. Sometimes NSAID's like ibuprofen or naproxen can help with body aches, however they can be tough on the stomach esp. if you are not eating and nauseated as one would usually be in opiate wd's. So, you could try a low dose, and work your way up as comfortable if they do help. Taking a Tums or a simple antacid a little before a dose of an NSAID could help for the stomach issues.

You will want to take a lot of hot baths/showers, or simply soak your feet in hot water. This can help, at least temporarily, with chills, sweats etc. Some people enjoy exercise claiming the natural endorphins released help, however, exercising during opiate wd might not be the first thing you want to do. Other than that, trying to distract onself can be helpful, to a degree - to take your mind off of the opiate wd's. I hope it goes as best it can.

Honestly, if you go to a GP and explain that you have abused opiates and are looking to get clean but need some help, you might get yourself some clonidine which is very helpful for the cold sweats, and maybe even a short benzo prescription. Remember, if it's a legally prescribed by a physician, it's NOT illegal.

OTC, you can use loperamide (imodium), and it works well for me, but as Alex said, it IS an opiate, and so you WILL fail a drug test while taking imodium. Whether or not you can simply say "I used imodium" and they will be cool with that is up to you. Naproxen (Aleve) is an over the counter medication for aches and pains, and it works very well for me. Your mileage may vary, but I recommend it.

However you decide to go, good luck to you!

Yeah, this is all good advice. All of these will definitely help alleviate some of the shitty feelings from a kick. Fresh air and a bit of exercise can also make a huge difference if you're well enough to get out of bed..hah.

OP, try searching for the DETOX megathread. Tons of advice and support there including OTC medicines and what not.

I can;t find any proof to back up your drug testing statement about loperamide causing a failure. Surely this would not be an issue if it was a gs/mc drug test as they can tell specifcally what opiate you are using.

Panel drug test differentiate between oxycodone, heroin, and opiates. I can't find any evidence that suggests you are correct that it would cause a failure on the opiate panel.

LOL If it were that easy everyone at the methadone clinic would be using that excuse when they failed the spot test for opiates.

Typically, if you fail a drug test, they send the results to a lab of some sort, to find out what exactly caused the positive result

Lillady, know you said you've got to get opiates out of your system fast so this might sound completely counter-productive but if you're finding cold turkey too much to bear Codeine Phosphate as found in cheap as chips and freely available OTC pain meds can help massively with the very worst symptoms if you dose it right doing a very fast taper over the withdrawal period. You'll be opiate free very nearly as fast as cold turkey and it will be a lot easier to get there. I had 30mg Codeine Phosphate tabs prescribed to me but you can cold water extract from OTC meds and do it yourself. Dunno what your opiate of choice is so your timescale and mileage may vary, but I started low dose day 1, upped dose a little day 2 and again day 3 as withdrawal peaked to a max dose of 240mg, then cut dose hard and fast day 4/5/6 aiming to be taking nothing day 7. The idea is you take just enough to cut the very worst symptoms, without dosing so high as to interfere with withdrawal or prolong the detox. Course it will inevitably slow the detox to some extent cos you're trading comfort for speed, and you're better doing it without an opiate, but if you find you can't cut it cold turkey it will really help. No worries on legality / failing drug tests / whatever with something you'd take for a bad back or period pain either is there, so bonus points there too!

Lofexidine is good if you can get hold of it, Clonidine might be easier to get hold of and does the same job. Both suppress the over-production of Noradrenaline that accounts for a lot of the spaced-out, restless, shaking and cramps. Have to be treated with caution being careful not to take so much that you crash your blood pressure down into blackout territory, and must taper off them over 3 or 4 days as you come out of withdrawal to avoid rebound hypertension. They can help a lot though you might not feel like they're doing anything for you cos you won't know how much worse you'd have been without them.

Never used Loperamide but by all accounts really helps. Plenty of threads on here discussing it.

Long hot baths with a few drops of Lavender essential oil was a constant source of immediate relief. Sounds almost ridiculous that Lavender could do anything for you but it really does help you to relax and loosen up the cramps, and it's proven as an aid to sleep. If you're struggling to sleep the half hour of relief it gives you could be just enough to nod off. Try to eat and keep hydrated even if you're nauseous and struggling to keep anything down. Really important you do what you can to keep your energy levels up when your body's at a low ebb. Sleep when you can.

Best of luck with it. You can beat it for sure. Plenty doable. ;)

as everyone else has said, loperamide helped me with the fire shits when i was w/ding from oxy! and it seemed to give me a sorta body warmth with it too, suppose it came from the fact that my anus could no longer expel fire every hour though

honestly becareful going cold turkey i did it but with an insanely large habit and wound up in ICU for 8 days while i was i guess detoxed idk after the first wave on vomitting blood came and the seizures i dont remember til i woke up in ICU 8 days later and this was from heroin withdrawl so dont get it twizted a big enough habit cold turkey will kill you the doctors can not test heroin on patients n then see what withdraw is like and so there for dont know what they are talking about especially when they say well its the same thing as oxycodone withdraw its not seeing how oxy is pure and dope is definitly cut with any and everything even fucking barbituiates lol i know rediculus it is but im just saying if u get real bad u need to get to the doc/hospital dehydration/seizures/heart rate all this shit can fuck u up severly, and if ur unlucky like me you can even rip ur stomach while clenching cause u can vomit anything else up n then the blood start massively coming out n you gotta get a transfusion so yea if need it hit a hospital or doc office.
