Endogenous psychoactive tryptamines reconsidered: an anxiolytic role for dimethyltryptamine.

The presence of the potent hallucinogenic psychoactive chemical N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in the human body has puzzled scientists for decades. Endogenous DMT was investigated in the 1960s and 1970s and it was proposed that DMT was involved in psychosis and schizophrenia. This hypothesis developed from comparisons of the blood and urine of schizophrenic and control subjects. However, much of this research proved inconclusive and conventional thinking has since held that trace levels of DMT, and other endogenous psychoactive tryptamines, are insignificant metabolic byproducts. The recent discovery of a G-protein-coupled, human trace amine receptor has triggered a reappraisal of the role of compounds present in limited concentrations in biological systems. Interestingly enough, DMT and other psychoactive tryptamine hallucinogens elicit a robust response at the trace amine receptor. While it is currently accepted that serotonin 5-HT(2A) receptors play a pivotal role in the activity of hallucinogenic/psychedelic compounds, we propose that the effects induced by exogenous DMT administration, especially at low doses, are due in part to activity at the trace amine receptor. Furthermore, we suggest that endogenous DMT interacts with the TA receptor to produce a calm and relaxed mental state, which may suppress, rather than promote, symptoms of psychosis. This hypothesis may help explain the inconsistency in the early analysis of endogenous DMT in humans. Finally, we propose that amphetamine action at the TA receptor may contribute to the calming effects of amphetamine and related drugs, especially at low doses.

Well, this explains a lot.. I was going to post something about DMT being an overlooked neurotransmitter, because it DOES have anti-anxiety, and well i could go on and on, but... if your tripping your balls off and seeing crazy visuals, take a small toke of DMT, at least with me, the visuals STOP moving, its like SNAP back sober. %)

^ Thats published in medical hypothesis, so it's a geuss, not to be taken too seriously, until someone tests it. Personally I'm highly suspcious. Especially of the amphetamine hypothesis.

It should not surprise me if DMT would be prescriped to mental patients with mental illness

WE know: also 4-ho-dmt very effective treatment of OCD

It have been shown that DMT and Ayahuasca are very effective and powerfull medicine in both mental and more serious dangerous illness

There are so many examples on the net! But pharmacy isnt too happy to have people know too much about it, money you know, since DMT very much grows on the trees, anyone allmost could get a very big stash cheaply with great ease

DMT are medicine and a VERY important neurotransmitter, if someone have too little or too much i think that it can have a great inpact on many aspects of life and the modulation of the mind

Yes! Before I found this, I was going to post something about DMT being the 'overlooked neurotransmitter'. I totally understand when they say, low doses of DMT, instead of making psychosis worse, actually reduce it. There was one time when I had been up a long time, we were at this after party (long weekend..), and I had taken LSD, some 2C-T-7, and then a little MDA eventually. The MDA was causing me to hear and see people that weren't there, out of the corners of my eyes kind of thing. I felt cracked out and tired/etc. Well, i'd keep puffing on the DMT pipe to 'sober' me up - and thats what it did, totally stopped everything.

I've smoked it other times while tripping and it will cause the visuals to ...stop. It does a lot of other things, my brain can work faster, I can see better further away, and my eyes will also focus faster (from near to far). DMT does all kinds of shit that other psychedelics don't do (psilocin has some similarities, seems like anything with a DMT has SOME similarities at least).

%)

Huh? We do? How? Do you have anything which supports this statement?

One more time, Do you have anything which supports this statement?

Does anyone know about this "trace amine" / TA receptor (which the pdf talks about DMT binding to)?

I mean i'd have to read through it again but I thought it was definitely found (maybe just in rats, i forget now).

I definitely believe DMT plays a big role, regulating all kinds of things (but these are from my own observations from using DMT so damn much). I would love to know WHY but, DMT's "psychedelic effects" are so much different than any other psychedelic drug i've used. I know it affects 5HT1A (and maybe another one i forget), but whatever it does at 2A, seems so much different than everything else - I mean usually when I mix psychedelics, lets say take a capsule of 4-Aco-DET (or whatever) while i'm seeing some crazy intense 2C-T-7 visuals, usually it always mixes and produces even crazier visuals and effects. There's nothing else besides DMT, that I can take a low dose puff of, and all the moving visuals from anything i'm on just ... STOP, and audio effects, mental effects, they all just pretty much stop totally - only thing left being some brightened colors or something.

Other things i've noticed (there seems to be a ceiling on these effects, above a certain dose these don't increase, but the 'typical' DMT psychedelic effects do), a nice calm/relaxed feeling or "buzz", much much better coordination - if you look at your hand, the 'normal' slight jitters aren't there anymore, you can pick up something and it will be perfectly still, my entire brain can do more things much faster - like reading/thinking/even my eyes focus faster, sharper vision/easier to see things very far away or small, decreased anxiety, better focus ability, extreme "fluidness" to everything (seems to go along with your brain 'working faster') , i could go on but i'm lazy (these can all be from low doses before any noticeable psychedelic effects).

I would LOVE to find a molecule that you can take orally without a maoi, have it do mostly what DMT does (not be TOO different), but last a decently long time. I remember alpha-methyl-dipropyltryptamine being available for a short time, anyone know if there is any info on alpha-methyl-N,N-dimethyltryptamine?

MET (N-methyl-N-ethyltryptamine); I've read somewhere about it being active by mouth without a MAOI, but I honestly know nothing else about it - It's not going to last a long time though
