Anxiety due to EXCESS serotonin levels?

Somewhere you aren't.
Hello, My pet chinchilla has suffered anxiety for most of his life, but has lately started to go out more.
He enjoys MDMA, and unlike his friends after a night of usage, for the next few days he feels great!
His other furry pals complain about feeling like utter crap, whereas my chinchilla has no anxiety, and feels much better for several days.
So he was wondering, could his anxiety be due to excess levels of serotonin, and the MDMA after effects of depletion counter this?

No need for the pet nonsense. We don't do that anymore.

Anyway, yes. Anxiety is a well known side effect of excessive MDMA usage. Some people don't get it. Just take a long break until its gone and use MDMA in moderation.

Sorry didnt realise, didnt want to get banned or anything. What im saying is the complete opposite, after taking MDMA, on the come down, my anxiety disappears, where as my friends feel like shit.
So i was wondering maybe my anxiety i have suffered from for years is to do with my brain producing too MUCH serotonin, and on the comedown due to less serotonin my anxiety disappears.
For about 5 days after rolling I am completely anxiety free, which i find strange.

He's saying using MDMA gets rid of his anxiety for the next few days, and is proposing the hypothesis that the depletion of serotonin after doing MDMA might be what reduces his anxiety if it's possible that having too much serotonin can cause anxiety.

I've never heard of too much serotonin causing anxiety though. But I'm not sure whether or not it's possible.

MDMA completely neutralises any anxiety usually. I mean you feel none. But when I abused it, it got to a point where taking some would make me very anxious. So yeah that's my experience.

I was thinking it was quite strange, as I have been on SSRI and beta blockers before, and they have never helped. But after taking my first pill, pure bliss, and the days after I could actually leave my house with no worries, and felt great.
Think i will save this for special occasions, and enjoy the effects aswell as after effects of reduced anxiety.

I actually agree with you and experience similar stuff. I have bad anxiety but the few days after doing mdma, its like all the anxiety is gone. I dont think it has anything to do with serotonin though. In my opinion, the few days after taking the drug I find I can't concentrate as well and im just too fucking lazy to think. This in turn gives me no need or energy or even ability to stress over anything which makes me anxiety-free. Usually a week or so later I'm back to my regular anxiety though.

i would think that if you have too much Serotonin you will notice:

- Extreme sensitivity to SSRI's such as : Citalopram, Prozac/fluoxetine, zoloft/sertraline, (on all 3 of these, i had Fully blown pupils, jaw clenching and even drug mouth lol!! )

- Very empathetic of a person
- very kind of a person
But this is purely just me guessing based on what ive read and know myself.

i personally think its the anticipation that builds up of taking mdma , you know its gonna be great, you know the come up might suck, you know its gonna be loved up and euphoric and then your relieved after it goes well and you have an absolute fucking blinder of a night, and your positive mood all week deeply reflects that.

well darksidesam, I was put on citalopram for my anxiety, and my parents said i was a crazy mess for a few weeks, and was then changed to sertraline, and that made me even worse!
I just think I am a generally anxious person, but as a bonus, I will be rolling with my fiance within the next hour :).

Nah, if your anxiety was caused by excess serotonin, MDMA would make you go crazy. 8)

"First" is the key word here. Most people who suffer negative side effects from MDMA get them after using it for a while. Be responsible with the stuff, leave a couple of months between rolls, and it can stay this way.

Think i will save this for special occasions, and enjoy the effects aswell as after effects of reduced anxiety.

Damn good idea.

Here's a thought. Dopamine (amongst other purposes) regulates and effects confidence. The mechanisms of neurotoxicity propose that high doses of MDMA cause an increase in dopamine free radicals which oxidize in the serotonin cells and potentially destroys them. However, if you take non-neurotoxic doses (e.g. 100-200mg) dopamine would increase to compensate for the reduction in serotonin, but not to the extent that it is significantly destroying serotonin cells. The reduction in anxiety post MDMA-use could infact be due to an increased dopamine increasing your feelings of confidence.

Just some food for thought.

Another thing to add, Cocaine makes my friends feel great, but makes me feel so anxious after a tiny line i have to go home. So not quite sure whats going on in my head, just know that E seems to ease the anxiety.

Read this article http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/01/130128104739.htm and you will learn that mdma has a direct effect on the amygdala (part of the brain). The amygdala is one of the (in evolutionary terms) oldest parts of the human brain and plays a role in fear and anxiety, by triggering the main reactions we have to fear, like heart beating faster, hair standing up, running away, etc. This is one of the reasons why mdma may be useful in treating post-traumatic stress disorder and why you feel less anxiety after taking mdma.
On a personal note I used to have massive panic attacks after smoking cannabis, but have discovered that I can smoke and enjoy cannabis after taking mdma.

augustaB, that is quite strange, as I also suffer a few hours of complete hell if I smoke cannabis, Anxiety, severe panic attacks, vomiting ETC, Unless I am drunk and relaxed. This is also the same with cocaine, if i take sober I will become so anxious I will have to go home.

i to am a very anxious person.anxiety attacks on the daily but not to bad.learned to deal with them.i did use ecstasy heavily 2 years ago and its y i developed anxiety issues..i havnt till this day poped and im actualy scared to because im afraid of being realy sensitive to it and having a bad trip or panic attack.as i am very sensitive to caffeine and get anxiety attacks when i drink to much caffinated drinks... wich makes me curious now.and you say u have no calm down and dont feel like shit at all after using?

+1 on this post, I only take 100mg myself nowadays had 120mg last haha.

MDMA works rather peculiarly in this way. It seems that, likely due to the sheer level of intensity that MDMA acts upon several circuits of neurotransmitters, a residual buzz sticks around. It continues to act upon certain parts of your endocrine system and hypothalamus allowing your brain to still release some of those wonderful hormones letting you to feel so functionally euphoric. Unfortunately, this part is really just an illusion it will always fade, and if one were to be using MDMA religiously that damage will catch up to them once they take a long enough break to break the cycle.

I get the exact same thing! Usually a very anxious, sensitive person then chilled out for the next week about after rolling. I space my rolls out to ensure the MDMA doesn't eventually increase my anxiety (quite frankly fuck that). Have thought about doing a study on using MDMA in generalised anxiety treatment. I think the positive results shown in PTSD trials could extend to other forms of anxiety if paired with behavioral therapy. Only a theory though (please don't anybody be stupid enough to use this as an excuse to roll on their own in an attempt to cure anxiety).
