Antidepressants: Off-Label Use Approved for Post Acute Opioid Depression.

I noticed this on the wikipedia website that Effexor-XR does cross some opioid -mu pathways and is excellent for Opioid/Opiate depression. Then, a few days later - I check back, and its gone WTF? Does anyone know about this, or why it was removed? 8(

So anyways, I just switched from 10mg of Paroxetne (Paxil) to 37.5mg of Effexor-XR. I just took my first 37.5mg dose today, BTW I was on Paroxetine (Paxil) previously for 6 years on and off trying different dosages, even went as high as 60mg. Now at first, when I was about 17, Paroxetine realy worked at 20mg, until I thought I didn't need it anymore and quit C/T about 2 months later. *ouch for about 2 weeks*

Now I have also tried Cipralex, for you people in the US (Lexapro). I found it had the least side effects but really did nothing for my depression or my severe anxiety disorder.

I figured its time to get off Paxil because it felt like I was going in a downwards spiral and making my depression worse. I figured I would try an SNRI like Effexor or even Cymbalta, but I talked it over with my doctor and he says Cymbalta is still fairly new in Canada and he doesn't have any patients on it but said he uses a lot of Venlafaxine (Effexor) in his office with good results.

So, can anyone verify that any antidepressants are good for post acute opioid depression, or Effexor-XR?

personally no antidepressant worked well on me after opioid wds only downers make my depression go away which is not a wise thing to do long time

its really individualized. i was prescribed effexor and abilify for PAWS but i dont trust my dr. to not suddenly cut off my dose.

You would think that since anti-depressants treat depression, they would work for depression caused by previous opiod abuse, but I can see how it could also make it worse. If I were trying to treat my post acute depression, then I would want something that worked right away, and I would also want something that didn't have the possibility of causing even worse depression during that initial phase or during the time I was trying to get off it, because I would want to get off it since the last thing I'd want to do is try to treat a temporary problem caused by dependence with a solution that requires another long-term dependence.

That's just my own opinion though. I haven't really heard anyone around here ever talk about using these drugs post-withdrawal and I haven't read much of anything about how effective it would be.

When I had anxiety problems my doc gave me effexor. I only took it for 6 months and it has to be tapered and made me feel like shit the whole taper. Not as bad as opiates but it sucked pretty bad. IMO, I have been doing some outpatient stuff ,where I am almost finished with my taper from oxys, and you dont want to trade 1 addiction for another. Exercise is a natural antidepressent. It has helped almost every symptom of my opiate withdrawal. The hard part is making myself do it IMO if u r physically able try exercising as much as possible. I have known alot of people who have had bad effects with anti deppresents. Anything natural would almost certainly be better. When I am off the oxys for good I will probably be running like forrest gump.

i am incredibly biased but i basically reccomend lyrica for EVERYTHING. it really is a panacea, at least for me. its WONDERFUL for opiate wd, paws, anxiety, depression, comedowns from stimulants, replacing benzos...the list goes on and on. its going to explode as far as being used for off label use and soon enough will have a broader indication profile than any drug i can imagine. it has a very slim abuse/addiction potential as well which makes it excellent for treating the above issues for dependent persons.
