Hey there guys and gals :)

I would like to hear some people's opinion taking the antibiotics Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole after having surgery, I havn't done much research myself but am currently taking them after just having an appendix removed and would really appreciate some guidance on the risks of taking and not taking them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciprofloxacin#Special_precautions

The list of adverse reactions worried me as did the risk of serotnin syndrome with Metronidazole, I don't trust the pharmaceutical cartel quite as much as some of you bluelighters :)

I'm pretty sure im having some serious side effects from them but cannot tell for sure as I dont know how I would be feeling without the drug after just having an appendix removed.

Your help would be ever so greatly appreciated.

I would also like to mention that I had been using a lot of drugs reguarly just before the incident but had managed to stay clean for 2 weeks (Except marijuana) before this happening in my attempt to get completely sober again.

Drugs used most frequently were codeine, valium, buprenorphine and gbl as well as others less frequently in between.
These were taken daily for a period of about 6 months and less frequently before that for a period of about 8 months.

In the hospital they gave me morphine and tramadol every 5 hours as well as anti-sickness medicines which was really quite unpleasant, glad to be back at home using marijuana instead of opiates, Im amazed at how well the marijuana has benefited me, less pain, better mood, less nausea, able to eat properly, motivation, good stuff!

They have prescribed me codeine to take for 2 weeks but I have decided to replace with marijuana instead as I find it much more effective for treating my symptoms and dont want to be using codeine again. There isn't much doubt in my mind that this is a good idea but what do you think?

Massive thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to read and respond, Cheers =D

Without seeing your medical records, I think you definitely need to continue taking them. Call your doctor and report your symptoms if you think you're having a reaction and he can help you sort that out.

Antibiotics are fairly important after certain appendectomies to act as prophylactics for infection. Trust me, you do NOT want an infection to develop. Please give your doctor a call and sort your symptoms out with him, but don't discontinue the antibiotics unless he says so or switches them.

Edit - and the marijuana is fine, although it might lower your O2 sat, which isn't ideal for healing.

My wife can not take cipro, she has a severe allergic reaction. However after a surgery you can't just not take your antibiotic without talking to a doctor. He could rx you something in another family.

Yea take your antibiotics for sure. You just had surgery and you don't want that shit to get infected. This is defiantly a necessary prescription. If you think you're having some side effects call your doctor and let him know and he'll probably script you another antibiotic but don't stop taking them without talking to your doc.

The weed will most likely be fine... can't really think of anything marijuana interacts negatively with and you don't have to take the codeine if you don't want to... it's just for pain... although codeine can be pretty fun. Especially combined with weed lol but do what you want there.

Yeah just re-iterating what everyone said it is really important to take anti-biotics after surgery and to take them the entire course recomended. Why would anti-biotics be safer? the risk of infection is alot higher not taking anti-biotics than the risk of some extremely adverse side effect and the "drug cartels" that provide anti-biotics have probably saved millions of lives with them.

Thanks ever so much for your responses, I wasn't on a mission not to take them just wanted some advice so thank you, thank you, thank your for your responses!

I'll continue to take the ones I have been given I think despite the side effects I feel they may be giving me (Nausea, diarrhea, pressure in left ear, feeling of being detached from my surroundings and temperature fluctuations).

I think I may even end up taking the codeine as the pain is really starting to get to me at times and my parents are really against me using marijuana, however they are more than happy to feed me codeine despite my previous addiction to it.

It should be okay though I will only be taking 60mg for pain relief not the 350mg I used to for recreational effects, using not abusing :).

this sounds like you are fishing for someone to have a reaction

That sounds like a stress reaction more than any sort of drug reaction, but who knows.
Have a happy and safe recovery :)
