A Republican lawmaker in New York who has a record of voting against medical marijuana legalization has been arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.

State police said that a suspicious odor was noticed in Assemblyman Steve Katz’s vehicle when they pulled him over for driving around 80 mph in a 75 mph zone at around 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

“After noting the odor of marijuana, a New York State Trooper found Katz in possession of a small bag of marijuana,” a statement from state police said, according to the Times Union.

Katz was given an appearance ticket for having less than 25 grams and is scheduled to appear in Coeymans Town Court on March 8. He also faces charges for speeding.

Last year, the assemblyman voted against a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana in New York.

Katz’ office said that he was expected to release a statement later on Friday.

soulless fucker, skip the public statement, i want him publicly flogged

Im amazed at how often this happens. Just take a look back through DiTM archives and see how many articles there are like this, and thats just the ones that our trusty bluelighters find and post.

haha aahhh logic you beat me to it, just read this story on nuggetry and thought this should go in DITM. god i love it when hypocrites get caught red handed, anti drugs ppl getting arrrested with drugs, anti gays getting arrested with male hookers AND drugs. sooner or later the gov has to see that in the massive majority of ppl that favor the legalization of pot, some of them hate seats high in state and federal government. i wonder if he will just plead guilty or if his lawyer will make some crazy defense like "it was an exhibit from a court case to show how dangerous and well hidden a small bag of weed can be"

stuff like this works in our favor because it shows how hypocritical politicians can be. I can't wait for the day when marijuana is federally legal. That day is coming.

Ahahahaha - Let that be a warning to the rest of you two-faced lawmakers who are pro-drug war. I hope you're all caught and given ridiculously harsh sentences for simply being in the position you are, yet in possession and using exactly the substance you're officially against, you corrupt hypocrites (not that I'm surprised, I always knew you parasites slither about in places you damn well don't deserve to be)!

What kind of penalty is one likely to get for less than 25g in the US?

This is for first time offenders, multiple offenders usually get worse penalties.

In my state, if you have even a marijuana stem or seed, you receive a citation and have to appear in court, almost always resulting in at least one year of probation with mandatory urinalysis (drug testing) and if you mess up on probation AT ALL, you are sentenced to up to one year of jail time, though I was told I'd receive 7 months of jail time if I messed up my probation.

In some areas in my state, you go directly to jail for having any pot and have to stay in there until you go to court unless you get bailed out. Closer to the cities, it is more likely to receive a citation and then later have to appear in court.

More than 14 grams in my state is a felony. Less is a misdemeanor.

Marijuana is considered pretty damn illegal in 2/3's of the united states but over time, more and more states are allowing for medicinal marijuana and 2 have allowed for recreational marijuana.

They should have taken a urine sample and tested it for drugs, considering he had a bag of weed on him, I'd guess that he smoked weed recently. He probably would have tested dirty. By law, he would need to be charged with a DUI at that point.

In a way i agree, but at the same time you would be super pissed if they did that to you. I hate hypocrites as much as the next person but you shouldnt wish something you would hate on someone else because they arent smart enough to do the right thing.

I think he should be because his actions-voting anti-marijuana results in people continueing to be arrested. If he was a random person that said weed is bad and then had a bag it would be different but the people we elect are supposed to be the best among the people to make the best decisions for the people.
