Being getting a touch of hayfever lately as its the end of summer here, and so from time to time i take an anti histamine, or codral - decongestant tablet (probabley ephinepherine).

I don't really have any nasal congestion at the moment. I've got a big night planned for saturday and may try some coke.

Is it dangerous to snort whilst taking anti histamines or decongestant tablets? Does it affect the absorption at all?

Pseudoephedrine and cocaine may increase your risk of adverse cardiovascular effects, and could be over stimulating.

From looking at the literature, it seems as though for some drugs vasoconstriction in the nasal passages leads to decreased blood plasma concentration of another intra-nasally absorbed drug but increased concentrations in the brain.

This was with drugs that utilize certain passages through the nose to access the brain; studies done on local vasoconstriction of the nose and nasal administration of cocaine (for dental anesthesia) showed decreased plasma concentrations of cocaine but there isn't data I could find on brain levels of the drug.

Seeing as cocaine itself is a potent vasoconstrictor and doesn't seem to self-limit absorption, it should be OK. I would be more concerned about possible cardiovascular side effects.

I have combined the 2 on a number of occasions (both meaning and not meaning to). A couple of times I noticed a bit more strain on my heart. You know that feeling where your heart beats so fast it feels like it missed a beat? Not good.

I try and stay away from the combination these days.

I have tried Anti-histamines but they are of limited use in my experiences. Most of the time I have cocaine I am drinking alcohol, and the first generation anti-histamines that actually work (ie Phenergan etc.) don't mix well with alcohol. Second gen anti-histamines (ie Cetrazine) pretty much don't work for me at all.

Having bas sinuses sucks!

^ Have you tried the steroid based nasal sprays? Rhinocort or Beconase? They take a few days to kick in, and you have to use them every day but they can be quite effective for non-viral based nasal congestion and inflammation.

yeah a mate of mine swears by Rhinecort, never tried it because i think you need prescription? I was thinking of fexo tabs and telfast for the anti histamine, and codral or demazin for the decongestants.

So it's quite bad for your heart is what i'm hearing. And no effect on absortion.

Cheers guys

Yeh I've tried Rhinocourt and Beconase (i think). They work for a little while but after a couple of days they dry up the back of my throat/sinuses and it becomes quite uncomfortable. That and they pretty much stop working all together after a couple of weeks of use.

Rhinocourt is and always has been Over the counter as far as I know.

As far as Anti-Histamines go, I've found Phenergan to be the most effective if you don't mind the sedation. Just keep the doses small and it shouldn't be too bad.

It's OTC.

You could also try a locally acting vasoconstrictor such as oxymetazoline (Sudafed nasal spray). Used correctly there should be no great effect on blood pressure, though continuous use can result in dependence on the substance for normal nasal passage functioning.
