Excerpts from another report.
Drugs kill 7 million a year
Tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs prematurely kill about seven million people worldwide each year and the number is rising, according to a study released in Australia on Tuesday.
Alcohol and illicit drugs were responsible for about 8.9 per cent of the total global burden of disease in the year 2000.
Tobacco was the number one killer addiction in 2000, responsible for 4.9 million deaths, or 71 per cent of the total drug-related deaths
1.8 million deaths were attributable to the use of alcohol, about 26 per cent of all drug-related deaths
Illicit drugs caused about 223,000 deaths, or 3 per cent of all drug-related deaths.
Need I say anything.

That's all very good and well. Good statistics.
Personally I'm not too concerned with the death rate by drugs.
I would be more concerned of damage done to the brain, the state you'll be in in 10 years,20years, of using those drugs.
Maybe you'll be like my uncle whom before he died, when he would wake up in the morning, his wife would say
"Do you know who I am today?"
And he would reply "My sister?"
And she would say No...
Then he would say "My mother?"
True story - and not a good state to be in, for him OR for her!
Think about it, death is not the only thing on the cards for abusing drugs. Death statistics are low, but what is high? What's unknown? What are you risking?
Things to think about.

I see deaths though drug use a bit like deaths true car accidents:
- Both statistics are lower than many others.
- In both cases there are many more injuries than deaths.
- Both ARE dangerous
- With both it is foolish to reference another statistic in order to infer that cars/drugs are safe.
