Another recently ADD diagnosed individual

I was diagnosed about a week ago and they prescribed me Concerta. Now, I've been doing some research(maybe not enough), but I can't seem to find any posts regarding some of the possible side effects of the drug. My Psychiatrist told me that I may get irritable and I also read that it may induce hair loss?

If there's any other side effects that I should know about please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.

Hey bro. How old are you? You should get a second opinion. How were you diagnosed? Observation? A questionnaire? I only ask because I'm 35 and some quack tried to say I had ADD last month, for which he prescribed me Ritalin. Since then I've gotten two second opinions and gone through a battery of tests, several diagnoses, an MRI...the point it is that I most certainly do not have ADD. Too many doctors are slingin' that diagnosis left and right much too quickly. The only upside is the fact that I've been snorting the Ritalin (mild but something at least). As an addict, I do it all.
 
Well I've always had trouble with school and stuff but I really thought it was because I was slow or dumb or something. I just never fully paid attention. So I took a trip to see a therapist and he asked me a variety of questions which lead to him diagnosing me with ADD or ADHD (I cant remember). So after that he said that the only way to treat something like this at the age of 20 is through medication. He gave me a questionnaire to answer myself and one for my girlfriend(Since she was around me often enough). So I took another trip but this time I saw a Psychiatrist. He asked a few questions similar to what the therapist asked and when I answered, he didn't disagree. I don't know if that counts as a second opinion, but yeah. Thoughts?

eat more fish with omega 3 like salmon and tuna, and see if your concentration improves a bit:)

i am talking truth as i used to have the attention span of a fish

I actually supplement with Flaxseed Oil that's concentrated with omega 3. But I'll most likely take your advice and eat more fish protein though.

But regarding Concerta, any side effects?

anyone? lol
 
Concerta is the brand name of an extended release methylphenidate (Ritalin) formulation, in a capsule.

It has very unpleasant effects imo. And in my case not helpful therpeutically or worthwhile recreationally.

Some potential common side effects include: anxiety, raised blood pressure, pupil dilation, dry mouth, nausea, headache, jitters/shakes, increased energy/motivation, increased focus/concentration, mild 'euphoria', feelings of depression, stimulation/wakefulness, alert... and many more.

Now how would you describe it being different from adderrall? Would you say adderall is more pleasant?

Sorry guys if I'm asking too much.

I've never used Adderall, it's not available in Australia. I am scripted dexamphetamine.
 
I was also recently diagnosed with ADD as an adult, I know there is a lot of controversy about it being over diagnosed but I think if you're seeing a psychiatrist and the meds help you than it doesn't really matter what you call your "disorder".

I was prescribed Ritalin, you're just on an extended release version of Ritalin, however I always found Concerta to be more annoying side effect wise than IR Ritalin.

I think Adderall, Dexedrine, Vyvanse.... basically Dextroamphetamine works the best for ADD type symptoms but Methylphenidate (Ritalin) works for me, just not as well as D-amp.

Next time you see your doctor ask them about trying different ADD meds, you should be able to try out different ones and see what works best for you.

I wouldn't worry about hair loss if I were you, just make sure you explore all your other options. If the Concerta doesn't do it for you after a couple weeks than don't take it, but give it a chance, your body will adjust to the side effects if it's going to work for you.

Oh okay. Good to know. But as far as comedowns, do you experience any? What about irritability? How are you coping with that with Ritalin? I'm already Irritable as it is and I'm afraid of just blowing up on my girlfriend :X

Man, all these questions will probably get you guys irritated instead haha.

Funny - i find that ritalin (non-time-release methylphenidate) works far better for me than adderall, for ADD symptoms.

I found that adderall had far worse sideeffects - i was irritable, i crashed in the evening (XR my ass! Lasts almost the same time as the IR for me), and it made me feel an unpleasant wired feeling (like if you've stayed up late drinking coffee). Was not happy with it at all. I mean, it worked and all, but shit, it wasn't worth it.

Recently i've been getting ritalin online, and it's a huge improvement. If i aim the dose right (fairly low) it improves my focus, and i don't get the same kind of crash as a did with adderall. I have not tried the time-released one, but i suspect it would work as well, and keep me from having to redose to maintain the benefits.

I only take add meds when i need them for something. On weekends or when i don't have anything to do that i'm going to have trouble focusing on, i don't take it.

Most people feel that strattera is garbage (never tried it, no interest in it, though i'm sure it helps some people.)
 
Well I took concerta for the first time today. It was only 18mgs so I can't really feel a difference. Am I supposed to feel a change after a few hours? or??

Psychiatrist told me to double up on the dose after a week just so we can find out how much I actually need. So far no weird side effects. No nausea, inability to eat, nothing. I was easily irritated but I'm always like that.

We'll see tomorrow if I notice any other side effects, changes or improvements.
