hey

Im just wondering if anyone has ever thought or if they know about the effects of taking 5htp and the bodys natural ability to produce serotonin.

i was thinking the other day, if i take 5htp on a regular/semi-regular basis (i.e. every day or every 2nd day) would i later on in life struggle to create my own serotonin due to the fact that i had been taking 5htp frequently.

My theory is that since 5htp is assisting serotonin uptake, the effort put into natural serotonin production during use of 5htp may then be lessened, making us in a way dependent on 5htp to help produce serotonin. Therefore reducing the ability of natural serotonin production later on in life.

peoples thoughts???

5-HTP does not produce dependence nor withdrawls. It is not a receptor agonist/antagonist but merely a precursor, and does not exert a terribly strong pharmacological effect unless combined with other serotonergic drugs.
