There was a TV show on in the UK recently about the "Humanzee" Oliver. Everyone was convinced that he was a human/chimp hybrid. DNA testing eventually proved this wrong but it's an interesting story anyway.
I'm sure that if humans and chimps could naturally breed together we'd have seen the hybrids by now. We've both been around for thousands of years after all.

I second what fairnymph has been saying. I, too, am in biology class. It's all pre-zygotic and post-zygotic barriers to preserve DNA and genetic structure. Just the same as tons of inter-familiar breeding, especially with moms, dads, and kids, could cause a level of sterility over time... not to mention, the offspring would be dumb as rocks.

Well I looked around quite a bit and there doesn't seem to be too many people ready to say conclusively whether apes and humans can breed or not.

I would just like to clarify that I am talking about a human/ape hybrid resulting from sexual intercourse between an ape and a human. I have no doubt that a human/ape hybrid can be produced in a lab. Just in case there was any confusion on that point.

We're still a society of spade-and-pitchfork wielding witch hunters, we're just (tea anyone?) more civilized. Crimes of passion, especially those of a sexual nature are held in contempt not necessarily because of the damage they do, but more for the weakness, the lack of self-control it shows in the offender. Note that manslaughter is not considered a crime of passion like rape or 1st degree murder. But like I said, it's not the result, it's the intent, the weakness.
