A ZOO boss has accused animal rights activists of murdering two dolphins with a heroin substitute in a plot to get the park closed down. The male dolphins
suffered slow, agonising deaths during a weekend rave festival hosted by the zoo last year.

Officials believe that clubbers fed the marine mammals lethal doses of buprenorphine.

The party drug — also used by doctors for pain relief and opiate addiction — suppressed the dolphins’ natural instinct to rise to the surface to breathe.
Now Roby Gasser, director of the Connyland park in Lipperswil, Switzerland, has accused two unnamed former keepers of deliberately poisoning the dolphins to stop the zoo’s captive breeding programme. He claims the keepers — now animal rights activists — deliberately sacrificed the dolphins to get the marine park shut down. Mr Gasser said: “The Swiss law for the protection of animals no longer allows us to import this species. “And the females cannot reproduce without males.” He claims the dolphins were given the drug wrapped in their favourite fish snacks. e told local media: “They are the only people who would have known what they like to eat. These people have changed camps. Now they’re working for German animal protection organisations.”

regardless its probably not good for the dolphins to rave?

also the animal activists changed camps and are now working for the germans? sounds a bit out there

and what kind of animal activist decides to kill dolphins in order to get their point across seriously?

i think it is....
also clearly dolphins are not humans therefore their bodies will react differently than human bodies to mind altering substances

Buprenorphine isn't a party drug.
And dolphins are reasonably close to humans in terms of phuysiology, at least they are mammalian. Thus opioids would be expected to have just about the same effect as they do in humans namely analgesia and respiratory depression.

Killing dolphins with opioids is a fucking dickheaded move. I hope those green peace fuckers rot in a jail cell. Pricks.

please somebody answer my question.... what kind of animal rights activist kills dolphins to get their point across????
its rather bizarre behaviour

"the party drug"

seriously? 8)

i guess its easy for the media to say anything is a party drug

but i think the only people who have 'partied on Bupe' were ex addicts lookin to go n out n try n have a good time n take thier mind off using

I believe their goal was to disallow the aquarium's ability to captive breed thereby eventually preventing them of having any dolphins. The article also mentioned a new ban of importation. Still very sick logic on the part of the greenies.

yah they need to rethink their priorities for sure

were they mad that there was a rave next to the dolphins or something?
because its prob not the most humane thing for the dolphins if nothing else the loud music and heavy bass probably was unpleasant in thier aquariums
maybe thats what made them just say fuck it

It is sort of mind blowing that of all the people who have posted in this thread, who I have read great things from in the past, would believe that pro-animal rights activists would feed narcotics to dolphins in an aim to kill them. That makes sense to NO ONE! Take 2 minutes, think it out, make a pro's/con's list... See... Ridiculous!
Does it not make more sense that the person who has something to lose (licensing, a business) is covering up their problem by 'just blaming the hippies' as usual. I have read (also mentioned in the comments section of that article) That there were NO narcotics found in the animal from the autopsy and that it is very possible the animal died due to neglect from the owner/manager. This happens on the regular, every year a few captive dolphins die because the owners either don't know how to take care of them, or don't give a fuck.

I just cannot picture people who care for these animals deciding to kill them with an overdose to get a point across. It surprises me that no one else has typed this before me... It just doesn't make any sense.

It's plausible in my mind. Rulers of civilizations/countries have gone forward with mass murders/genocides out of their mis-guided notions of protecting the rest of their constituents.

It's also important to realize buprenorphine is a super-potent drug, and not much is needed to gain effects. If it was a drug that needed 100 grams to overdose on, you'd sure as hell find it in the body. If it's something you need < 1 gram to overdose on, or even less than that, it's possible you are looking for a needle in a haystack.

That contradicts several news reports, like:

But another toxicology report carried out at the time, leaked to Swiss media, has raised new questions about what happened.

Tests conducted by the forensics institute in St Gallen found the heroin substitute Buprenorphin in the animals' urine.

Dutch marine biologist and dolphin expert Cornelis van Elk said: 'Opiates are extremely dangerous for underwater mammals and would never be used in any legitimate treatment.

'The reason is that dolphins are conscious breathers which means they actively decide when to come to the surface to breathe, for which they need to be awake.

'Even when sleeping, there is part of the brain that automatically controls the breathing instinct in the same way as it does for people when asleep.

'Drugging them with opiates could well cause this part of the brain to switch off with fatal consequences.'

(OT: I know the Daily Mail is much maligned here, but they have a HUGE budget and can often afford to dig up details that other sources don't bother with. Some of their Miami stories, for instance, are much more detailed than the same stories in Miami newspapers.)
