Yesterday, multitudes took to the streets in more than 40 Mexican cities - and in protests by Mexicans and their friends at consulates and embassies in Europe, North America and South America - to demand an end to the violence wrought by the US-imposed "war on drugs."

What? You haven't heard about this? Or if you have heard something about it, did you know that it is the biggest news story in the Mexican media, on the front page of virtually every daily newspaper in the country?

A sea change has occurred in Mexican public opinion. The people have turned definitively against the use of the Mexican Army to combat against drug traffickers. The cry from every city square yesterday was for the Army to return to its barracks and go back to doing the job it was formed to do; protect Mexico from foreign invasion and provide human aid relief in case of natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Since President Felipe Calderón unleashed the Armed Forces, four years ago, to combat drug trafficking organizations, the violence between it and the competing narco organizations has led to a daily body count, widespread human rights abuses against civilians, and more than 40,000 deaths, so many of them of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire and used by all sides in the armed conflict that still has no winners, that never will have any winner.

This should be getting crammed down our throats at LEAST as much as Charlie Sheen was! WTF??

i'm not for the war on drugs or anything....but mexico acting like its our goddamn fault their country is a shithole is just ridiculous

^It mostly is our fault if you ask me.

The same thing could be said about much of Central and South America as well.

Approves of this. Viva la revolucion indeed. :)

Yes, the US war on drugs created the massive corruption that has always been in Mexico?
pfft cracka please, they like to shit all over us (Mr Calderon) but in the end...do you ever hear about americans sneaking into mexico?
i thougth so

War on Drugs created cash flow that led to existence of cartels in Columbia, increased U.S. anti-narcotics action in Columbia forces cartels to move to Mexico.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_Colombia

All that U.S. and U.S. funded anti-narcotics action has done in the last 30 years has moved the point of the power of the cartels closer to the United States.

We got better at interdicting cocaine coming into FL, so the cartels just started moving it through the U.S. - Mexico border.

I could go on and on...yes, you're right, conditions in those places wasn't too great to begin with, but the U.S. did absolutely nothing to help and has basically been shitting all over Mexico since the 1850s.

So basically, you're saying because in America we like to do drugs, that its our fault that foreigners see the opportunity for large large profits, and defend those assets at all costs?
If it wasnt mexicans, it would jsut be someone else.

^nah, they're saying it's our fault for pushing our 'drugs are bad' agenda in the first place, and forcing the world to follow our moves. Legalize drugs, cut the balls off the cartels.

I watched the news almost all day the other day looking for ONE mention of this, and I didn't see a fucking thing. I counted 4 fear mongering anti-drug stories. But the top story seemed to be if kindergartners should get ipads for free or not. Not a fucking WORD about this in our media all day long.

Has anyone seen anything in the main stream? I'm hoping colbert and daily show at least bring this one out a bit.

The issue the people in Mexico have is not that the US consumes the drugs that finance the violence, but rather that the US policy is what's behind president Calderon's decision to use the Mexican army to combat the cartels, which has resulted in tons of unnecessary bloodshed.

I've also heard many times that one of the cartels had been trained at some US army base as well. All in all, I feel like the Mexicans are justified in their blaming the US for what's going on there.

WOW. I it indirectly our fault I believe. I hope they get furious at the US, I feel that might be the only way anything is changed.

This situation really sucks for Mexico, and its not really like average citizens were ever given a choice about this.

Mexico's situation is fucked because of drug-money, no question. The US's insatiable demand fuels this w/o a doubt. However, I still can't help but wonder how much better things would be if, tomorrow, we legalized everything. You'd just turn cartels into companies, it wouldn't address the other issues that are requisite to the situation. It's not just the WoD, it's what the WoD is able to do with a country whose political/justice systems desperately need reform.
/just to be clear, I'm not denying the WoD is a major factor in lots of the current issues facing Mx, just saying that it's merely gasoline being added to an existing fire. LOTS of gasoline w/o question, but it's just magnifying underlying issues.
