And He Came Knocking....

Bitterness came knocking for me last night.
With all the charm of the reaper, he tapped on my door.
And I knew not whether to welcome this sight,
Or tell him to grace my threshold - no more.
Yes, Bitterness tapped gently at first, don't you see?
He wanted to gain entrance and sit for awhile.
But houseguests like him are not normal for me.
Guests who stay too long often fade a smile.
Bitterness began to knock ever louder and stronger.
"Let me in, damn you! You know you called for me.
This thief of hearts, to love him no longer,
I have come in answer to your pain-filled plea!"
"Rise up from your knees, you weak and small fool!
Allow me to fix it all with just a dash of scar tissue.
He was a liar, a traitor, and you just a tool,
Now how you choose to survive is this moment's issue."
I knew he could see me through the transparent door,
Wimpering in the pain of loveless abyss.
But I feared to allow him access as I wept from the floor,
How could I invite in a creature such as this?
For creatures like Bitterness, Resentment, and Hate,
Come knocking for us all, looking for homes.
Their urging comes gently, softly at hours often late,
And how we greet them is up to each person alone.
As I rose to my feet and wiped back the tears,
I knew I could not harbor a creature such as this.
For in that final moment when we choose life over fear,
Is when we chart a path to destruction or bliss.
I smiled softly and weakly as I turned the porchlite off and bid farewell to this unwelcome guest.........

unicorn83, thank you for your kind response to my post. Don't worry, I'll continue to write because it's a healthy outlet for my feelings.

As of bitterness and other negative feelings that "come knocking" for us ~ yes, it's hard to ignore them sometimes, but when we can shut them out and try to carry on more positively, it makes us the better person.
And as for the Thief of Hearts in my situation....he and I are talking things out. Who knows how the story will end, but by shutting out the bitterness, I was at least able to have a civilized conversation with him when he approached me. If the dark side of me had embraced bitterness, I'd have wanted to rip his heart out. Now I just feel sorry for him.
Carry on positively, young Bluelighters.
