Embers burned red beneath the flaming wood and metal grating of the stone fireplace. Errant sparks from the blaze swirled in the clockspring eddies of the updrafts. He took a long drag on his cigarette and blew a puff of smoke into the fire, where it mixed with the woodsmoke and was carried off up the chimney. It was a clear night, brilliant with the light of a thousand worlds beyond this one. He watched as the firelight pulsed with its dull and omnipresent luminosity. It made shadows that moved, almost living. Sometimes it felt like you could get trapped and disappear into the chanting heart of the blaze, and it would scatter you to the timeless eons like ashes to the wind. You could live forever, maybe, if you could live inside the flame.
The particles in the wood swirled and danced in concert like some fabulously orchestrated nebula, churning in wild synergy and then bursting into a vibrant explosion of light and heat. It crawled through the air and it washed over you with all the potential force of a thousand suns. Your body felt it, opened to it like a flower eating the dazzling radiance of life. Sometimes, if you were still, you could feel the flame burning inside of you.
He breathed, in and out, feeling the heat swirl around him, and watched the smoke rise out of the chimney to be carried away into a black sky. The forest around him groaned in the wind, the ice covered branches moaning with the symphony of desolate wild night.
IDK whats coming next, but I have a base and ill just go from here. Maybe it'll turn out cool, or maybe something stupid will happen and the guy will just turn into a werewolf or get abducted by aliens or something.
