I think it's easier to relax the anal sphincter on MDMA, maybe due to lowered inhibitions about doing so combined with, typically, an increased comfort with bodily sensations in general? I'm with you! Although I've never used poppers, so that's definitely not a necessity. Gel-E type vibrators work good to begin with as well. But in short order I'm up to the biggest fattest dong we own :) With my wife using it as a strap on and she enjoys the hell out of doing me.
