i had a disease
that threatened to kill me via dehydration
the doctors they repeated what I told them
sadness was their diagnosis
clinical melancholy

common enough they said plainfaced and apathetic
easily treated they said juggling clipboards
but we must act quickly
like mending the hull of a ship
before it sinks

so i gave my consent
i signed the dotted line
releasing myself from custody
permitting emotional incarceration
for fear of death

one stitch below each eye
to seal the ducts shut
then nothing
no tears of joy or sadness
no threat of death via dehydration
