Amphetamine Anti-Dote ?

^oh, and what about an alcohol antidote? dont see that happening (and i dont mean those sadistic "drink and you will get very, VERY sick" treatments).
creating antibodies for alcohol is a stupid idea; not for any social/political reasons but because alcohols are produced endogenously in your digestive tract as by-products of metabolism.

What uses do they plan on using this "antidote" for? Would this be used in MDMA/methamphetamine overdose situations? Or possibly something that drug offenders might have to take as a court order? Or what, any other ideas that you guys have? (I highly doubt that they will start giving babies this drug, as it is not researched enough at all yet) How long does it last, I wonder?

"Under Section 8.5 of the BlahBlahBlah Act passed in 2015, all applicants for Federal Student Aid must have their primary physician submit proof of either A) successful vaccination against the full battery of Schedule I substances within the past 5 (five) years, or B) a documented medical diagnosis whose symptoms or available treatment options preculde the administration of this vaccine."

"... all applicants for a New Jersey driver license ..."

"... all applicants for the Food Stamp program ..."

"... all applicants seeking professional licensure for [insert name of job] ..."

Etcetera.

Color me one cynical bastard, but this is the basic mechanism by which 'free democracies' take the back door to mandating the way people live their lives. They may not trample on your human rights. But they certainly will play the mean bouncer guarding the access door to everything that isn't strictly defined as a right, even if it's something you need to live a normal and culturally acceptable life.

For a second, I had a ray of hope that these proposed vaccines would at least solve the problem of costly court proceedings and punitive measures taken against drug users / possessors. But now I see that these could be used in tandem very well, to really fuck with people who dare to dabble. Since, as has been mentioned by Ham and PL, all vaccines can be overridden by saturation, this means vaccinated people will simply buy, use, and possess larger quantities in order to get high. This will be the PERFECT excuse for courts to impose harsher penalties for those caught!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't one be able to abuse the vaccine as a method for passing a drug test? lol. A bit extreme yes, but I was just trying to think of ways that we could use this against 'them' :P

Phrozen- I don't know if a vaccine would prevent it from working as a local aneastetic. Most of the 'caines commonly used in medicine are subsantially different. Certainly enough so that they should safe from destruction.

i think just about everyone sees the medical benefits for some people in something like this, but it's the slippery slope that such a drug could lead to that bothers people.

i just envision scenes from the movie Equilibrium when i read shit like this... and, tho' a world full of kung-fu fighting Taye Diggs and Christian Bale seems like a good idea for fap-material, i don't much fancy living in that world -- or even passing such a world off to my grandkids.

alas, i give it another 30 years and we'll have something equivalent to emotions in a bottle.

i agree, messing around with the immune system seems like some sci-fi'ish side effects could present themselves. Any one see "I am Legend"?

well... i read the book. ;)

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:

Methamphetamine (METH) abuse has become America's number one drug threat (NACO, 2005). Known strategies for combating methamphetamine drug use all have drawbacks. Current pharmacotherapies for managing the acute cardiovascular system, central nervous system and toxic effects are mostly supportive (Sato, 1992; Albertson et al.,1999; Richards et al., 1999); and do nothing to remove the drug from its sites of action in the brain. Also lacking are medications that can reduce or treat the medically crippling effects of METH addiction. Antibodies provide an attractive potential medication that can target the drug instead of the site of action (Kosten and Owens, 2005). These high affinity protein- based medications act as so-called pharmacokinetic antagonists, sequestering the drug in the bloodstream away from medically vulnerable tissues like the brain and heart.

I'd argue that some addicts would voluntarily sign-up. Isn't that the principal behind calling a sponsor but even easier? And of course, there are methadone programs and nicorettes...

Hi im a newb. Meth was my thing for 15 years. Its a very destructive drug no doubt. I think the vaccine could have applications in treating Addicts who have forsaken life , love and everything else to suck on the pipe for all eternity.
I agree that our civil liberties could be at risk from misguided lawmakers.
If you have ever watched your loved one rot away to nothing this will get your attention...

Meth is so destructive. If you have ever watched a loved one rot away to an insane shell of a person. This would be of interest to you. I agree our freedoms could be at risk with a "lifetime Vaccine" But for short term treatment of someone who will die or lose everything to meth this could be something good.

I used meth for 15 years

%)After lurking through this thread I went back to original article /link and quite frankly it sounds like hype. A press release pitch skillfully written to invoke an emotional supportive response. The person who this is neither a doctor or a scientist ~ if he were it would most certainly have been mentioned ~ think about it!

This is a drug company's public relations blurb trolling for government grant money or investors. Vague unsubstantiated "facts" hyphenated with bold optimism and bravo. What a pile crap.

What the hell are you talking about? Were you high when you wrote this? If you read the original article you wouldn't have made such moronic statements.

This is a University of Arkansas project, and the man they quote is Michael Owens, or more properly, Dr. Michael Owens. This article was written after they published their research, not before.

Could this lead to the University of Arkansas getting a big pay check from Lilly or Phizer or Abbot, sure, but that wasn't the reason for the search.
