Hey BLers, I have researched this quite thoroughly on the net and can not come up with a proper time-line. I currently live with my aunt and she has been on Amitriptyline for around 5 years at 100mg dose a day.

She has now tried to quit. She does not know how experienced I am with drugs (street drugs that is), and does not know about the millions of times I have withdrawn off of opiates. She has gone cold turkey, straight of the bat. I tried to tell her to taper slowly, but she did not really listen. The first two days were great, she did not feel anything. The third day, we both thought it was a miracle, as she had zero symptoms of anything...

Day four, and bam I see her in the morning looking dreadfull!! Her eyes are watery, she is very sick and can not stop lying down and getting headaches and horrible nausea. Her sense of smell has increased and she describes it to how it was when she was pregnant!!! We are now on day eight, and she is still horrible. Probably worse, if not the same as day four. NO IMPROVEMENT.

Now I have researched this and can not find anything conclusive. So I have turned to my favourite site, bluelight.

Guys, how long will this last? Has anyone ever had these before? What can I do to help her (immodium, DXM?? I don't know)? When will she improve?

I mean I am an opiate user and have been for years and have never seen nothing like this, and they call opiates (addictive and destructive), then wtf fuck are these? This is way worse than any opiate withdrawal I have ever seen or experienced. SO LONGGG!!!

I would try a 25% dose and see if this helps, if not 50%. if that doesn't help then probably a dr.this drug has a long half life and is generally eliminated slowly anyway. Exercise would likely help with feel good hormones, same with comedy. Lots of water too and some food if blood sugaris low. If you know about opiate induced PAWs, this is like this with ADs.

If she feel truly bad then she may need to see a doc (not such a good time for that!) for support. A low dose should really help and then she can wean from there. Let us know.

It has been eight days of cold turkey. If a 25%-50% dose is added, will it not add extra time to the WDs? I mean I have read some stories ranging from 2 - 3 weeks to thirty days of WDs? WTF?

Anyone have any more info on the length cold turkey can last, and if it is worth taking a dose, seeing as though it has been more than a week and it will not be more of a set back if the dose is taken (making it even longer)?

Will immodium help with nausea? Will DXM help with the low sertonin levels (30 -60mg dose?)?

Coming off of something like amitriptyline is different than coming off of opiates. She isn't feeling the withdrawals from an actual psychical dependence as the drug isn't like an opiate or benzo and doesn't cause that. It's an antidepressant that regulates the chemicals in your brain so what she is feeling right now is caused by the sudden level drop of chemicals in her brain.. but not true psychical withdrawal. Coming off of most drugs like that, it usually takes a few weeks for your brain to get back to somewhat normal..

The best thing you can do is treat the individual symptoms.. Immodium, ibprofen, naproxen, benydral for sleep, etc etc.

Also, why is she deciding to come off of her meds? Did she consult a doctor about this? Because when getting used to life without such chemicals.. it's important to do it gradually so it's not such a shock to your brain chemistry.

The meds have caused a whole host of side effects and she decided it was time to come off. I am not sure if she has consulted her doctor. I am just very worried, as i have really never seen anything like it. This is coming from a druggie.

I might attempt to further influence some sort of taper, as this is totally unproductive. Anyone else have experience or know how with these types of drugs? Thanks.
This is a Trycilic Anti-depressant, which I imagine is similiar to SSRIs.
