From handsome youth to meth-addled fugitive: How life of crime took a shocking toll on man involved in four-hour police standoff

In 2002, Matthew Joseph Medlin was a handsome 18-year-old — so good that even his first police mugshots make him look like a model.

But his latest police photo shows the repeat offender looking decidedly less attractive, after a four-hour police stand-off that saw him injecting himself with meth while talking to officers, and ended when he was tased and shot with non-lethal rounds.

Police found Medlin, 32, at 1pm on Saturday after they were called in to investigate reports of an unknown figure climbing on trains in a Portland rail yard.

Medlin, whose face is marked with black tattoos of knife-like eyebrows and tears, was already wanted for a parole violation. But when police approached, he jumped into an open-topped, dumpster-style car and refused to come out.

Officers surrounded the car, but Medlin — who later told police he'd been on meth and had been awake for 26 hours — seized rocks and pieces of metal for weapons, and they entered a standoff that lasted four hours.
Police said they tried to talk the man down, but he responded by injecting himself with more meth, causing him to behave even more erratically.

The standoff continued through a thunderstorm and hailstorm, and ended with Medlin being booked on multiple charges, including Criminal Mischief and Trespass, and given a $7,500 bail.

This incident is far from Medlin's first encounter with the law. In 2013 he was jailed for sex abuse, burglary and assault charges. However, in May 2014, despite being just six days away from release, he decided to mount an escape.

Medlin scaled the razor fence of Columbia River Correctional Facility and fled, but his distinctive facial tattoos meant that he wasn't at large for long.

Within ten hours of his noon escape, he was spotted by a correctional officer just two miles away from the prison.

Police were called and Medlin was eventually cornered in a Jack in the Box fast food restaurant by police. He was charged with second-degree escape and returned to prison.

Medlin's record stretches back to his 18th birthday in 2002, and one of his earliest mugshots shows a handsome young man with scant facial hair.

But as the years wind on, his photos become more menacing. In a 2007 image he is pictured with his eyes locked in a narrow glare, and what appear to be bruises and scrapes on his left ear and nose.

And in 2013, Medlin's infamous tattoos — two pointed 'eyebrows' and four roughly inked tears — appear for the first time. That year he was brought in by police on a number of occasions; one image shows him with black paint crudely scrawled across his face.

Cocky: Medlin's record stretches back to 2002, when he was 18. This picture from that time shows Medlin sporting a cocksure expression — unaware of what the future held for him

Medlin's 2014 escape led to an internal review of the Columbia River Correctional Facility by the Department of Corrections, who found a number of issues, according to local news station KOIN6.

Highlighted problems were local businesses not being notified and and 'antiquated' video system with eight broken cameras.

Changes made by the facility included adding more barbed wire and extending the existing barbed wire system.

I wonder why this story was considered newsworthy. Is it just because of his ridiculous mugshots?

this article is borderline homosexual in style. Guy jeeps going off about How handsome hè was before hè comes out of the closet (thats what hes trying to do with the tattoos right?)

Also this ... cocksure

You'd have to be pretty fucked in the head to decide to think those tattoos looked good...
I mean how do you look at them in the mirror and think "Yeaaaa that was a GREAT choice"

Escaping prison with 6 days left to serve...lol. Nice tattoos too lol.

Indeed, it's obvious to anyone that knows anything about prisons and gangs in them that he's involved in them while in prison.

But I've heard that it's easier for someone to get drugs, especially hard drugs like meth, dope/H, or coke/crack, and even hormones in prison than it is outside.

Not that I'm defending this man's sense of fashion, vice of choice, and/or IQ, but I've personally seen a far worse transformation than this from an alcoholic relative.

The reason for my saying so, should be obvious to those of you who know me: would such a story have been published in a newspaper if the psychotropic drug in question was legal for recreational consumption? I doubt it. And that's the fundamental problem I have with these sensationalist relics of the war on (certain / some) drugs that the media continues to spin to its audience. Maybe I'm not alone here =D

Conversely, I sincerely appreciate noonoo taking the time to share it with us; much obliged :-)

There are a lot of people who have never tried meth who look a little worse for wear at 32 than they did at 18. Those pictures were taken 14 years apart.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we all age.

Well he didn't come up with the idea whilst sober.

"Always do sober what you said you would do drunk, that will teach you to keep your mouth shut." -Ernest Hemingway

Maybe he passed out first at a slumber party and someone took their prank a little to far. Maybe he was kidnapped by terrifying clowns that were hell bent on making him join their insane clown posse as one of their own. . Maybe he is an Ernest Hemingway fan and he lost a bet he made not sober. Maybe he was forced into a hetero marriage as a gay man and wanted to make sure that his wife would NEVER EVER touch him.
All of these reasons make far more sense than choosing those tattoos on purpose, for his face.

Brilliant quote, and profoundly true in my experience.

Edit - Looking at the mugshots once more, I'd love to ask him if someone said he'd look like Clint Eastwood if only his eyebrows were accented.

---------------------

On a serious note, I'd bet that this guy had a troubled childhood which left him overly self-conscious and with especially low self-esteem, as well as with a strong desire to fit in and feel accepted by those around him (and being high could significantly help to reinforce a feeling of acceptance, which in itself would cause his brain to release even more dopamine/'feel-good chemicals').

From the very first mugshot, it subtly appears as if (criminal record notwithstanding) he's silently mourning his traumatic existence, which would be a good reason why he has persisted in habitually consuming his psychotropic drug(s) of choice as a sort of coping mechanism.

And if my hunch is true, then for what it's worth, he has my sincere pity. :\

This is why it's so important to stop stigmatizing 'street drug' users. Because if I'd partake in picking on such individuals because of their vice of choice, it can be extremely counterproductive, and the users would likely end up using even more drugs.

It's like I'm basically kicking them while they're already down.

This is what I would consider to be a moral failure (on my part rather than the drug users), because I sure as hell should know better. And it's a serious issue in our society that has caused an untold amount of needless pain and suffering.

And I'd hope that others feel the same way, because we don't seem to behave in such an overtly derogatory manner towards, for example, morbidly obese individuals who are seen eating at an all-you-can-eat buffet; or towards Type II Diabetics who can't discipline themselves with respect to sugary foods.

I'm trying to kick and it's insane how shitty and abusive people are. Being stigmatized because of the drugs I was addicted to and being dismissed because I am utilizing suboxone in the initial stages of recovery. People are shit in general and I can guarantee that some of these people have an alcohol problem. Just the fact that they really don't understand the science behind the whole situation but assume they do has lead to a lot of really unessecary judgement and bullying and I can imagine that someone who lives on the streets would find it so hard to transcend their past because of the added stigmas that people can judge them with.

It is indeed insane how hypocritical some people and some medical professionals even (who should know better) can be with respect to the manner in which they treat fellow citizens who happen to use 'street drugs.'

When I was in rehab for a few months near Toronto, Ontario (a globally-known destination with a good reputation), I had to put up with a lot of nurses and social workers who judged me quite harshly for being on Methadone Maintenance. Every morning when I'd go to dose, I always felt as if they didn't approve of my medication based on their conduct towards me.

And meanwhile, they had absolutely no problem with those of us who were smoking just outside near the door, and a couple of them were also smokers. Man that pissed me - fucking blatant double standards. So I wanted to speak me mind about it to them, but my roommate told me to keep my mouth shut because another guy was kicked out for doing the same thing, and he received no refund of the ~$15,000 he paid, but I digress.

Unfortunately for you, if I'm not wrong, the province which you reside in happens to be at the top (or second) when it comes to conservative Canadians.

I sincerely am sorry to read that you've been treated like a lesser human being for no just reason. Slowly but surely, more and more people are waking up and realizing that the war on (certain) drugs is a fundamentally contradicted sham which has caused far more death and destruction than the drugs themselves ever would have.

People are shit in general and I can guarantee that some of these people have an alcohol problem.

I absolutely believe you're correct.

Getting smashed and picking fights while intoxicated from Ethyl Alcohol is no big deal, it seems.

Deaths due to Alcohol Poisoning or Alcohol-related Diseases are rarely, if ever, published in newspapers.

On the other hand, deaths from, for example, Ecstasy (and I say Ecstasy because much of it is not MDMA) seem to warrant being published on the front page.

The double standards are fucking sickening. And I anxiously await the day when this futile war on (certain) drugs will start to fade into obscurity, and parasitic agencies such as the DEA and/or Law Enforcement Officers working Narcotics shall be the ones who are justly stigmatized.

Just the fact that they really don't understand the science behind the whole situation but assume they do has lead to a lot of really unessecary judgement and bullying and I can imagine that someone who lives on the streets would find it so hard to transcend their past because of the added stigmas that people can judge them with.

Tell me about it.

They see Smack users getting their fix, and somehow these anecdotal observations make them experts on the acute and long term risks of Diacetylmorphine consumption. And this includes cops - I don't care if you've handled some crack and placed into an evidence room - you have no idea how it personally feels to use that 'street drug' (or others).

It's like having an airplane passenger observing the pilots flying the damn thing, and from that alone, he is now an expert pilot.

It's like a male telling a bunch of mothers that he knows how it personally feels to become pregnant and give birth.

The amount of ignorance and arrogance that such massive tools seem to exhibit is beyond outrageous.

I really hope that more and more non-drug users realize and acknowledge that their opinions with respect to 'street drug' use, dependence and addiction are rather worthless.

No amount of observation and/or literature can ever commensurately substitute for actually using 'street drugs' (and the nuances associated with them).

Anyways, great post on your part, good day :D
