Keep in mind that I've used and enjoyed GHB/GBL/like drugs on many occasions and probably will again some time in the unforeseen future. That said I'm realistic about and careful when it comes to the drugs and substances I choose to put in my body. The simple fact of the matter if, for those who choose to use it on their random night out once in a while, GHB carries more risk than alcohol. However, if used safely, those risks are small, certainly no more than drinking, if not less. With that in mind, enjoy
If it was legal and regulated metered, watered down doses with distinctive colouring would be available. Grain alcohol is fairly easy to overdose on as well if you can keep it down.
I would like to see a source for GHB reliably causing fatal seizures etc. in withdrawal because I have never heard this.
Toothpastedog, Did you mean mL of a saturated solution of it in water? It is a solid substance.
It is still thousands of times safer when long term use along with relative side effects are considered. No one would ever drink again outside of Christian ceremonies and millions of lives would be saved if people actually compared the 2 drugs. It is propaganda to try and say it isn't much safer. For a drug with equivalent intoxicating effects it is hard to get any safer.
No, I have to say, given the way things exist in the world, in real life, right now, GHB is not drastically safer than alcohol.
Long term regular use? Yes, I'd say GHB/GBL/etc is
safer than alcohol. But short term use or binging, in some ways I'd say GHB is actually much more dangerous than any type or concentration
any of drinking alcohol.
If GHB were legal and there were requirements that somehow could be implemented in some universal, standardized way, which could make ALL GHB people got coloured or something that would indicate it's addition to beverages and its general concentration, we would certainly be better than the current situation. Frankly though, that's not only unlikely to happen, it would be an incredibly difficult thing to achieve (the universal standardization of GHB I mean, especially while it remains not-so-legal outside very limited medical applications).
Again, the incredibly steep
dose response curve must be kept in mind. Combined with the difficulties involved in being able to discern the addition and concentration of GHB added to a beverage/solution, and you've got a perfect storm. Not necessarily just for unsuspecting people who might be dosed by some pathetic asshole pervert, but especially for people using it recreationally themselves and their friends.
Bottles containing any amount of GHB (or related drug)
MUST be clearly marked and labeled as such. Adding a food colouring or something to the GHB solution, along with a label that obviously states the solution's concentration, is thus very important. Basically it's so easy to mistake GHB mixed with a beverage for just another harmless liquid, especially when already under the influence or something like GHB, alcohol or other CNS depresents, overdose is a very real possibility.
Such danger simply can and does not exist in the same way with booze. Even with everclear or extremely high proof drinking ethanol (say 198 proof), you can't just take a shot and risk ODing. It doesn't work that way. However, that is totally possible with GHB.
I referred to GHB in "mL" earlier because that is how it's commonly referred to, as mL, irl. That itself highlights my point. Measuring GHB solutions just in mL, as is so common, is in itself horribly dangerous. Just knowing the mL or volume of solution being consumed is worthless without also knowing the concentration of that solution.
As in my example before, with a GHB solution of low concentration, someone could take a shot that would provide their ideal dose, without any risk in itself of causing OD. However, at high concentrations, that same amount, the same sized shot, the same 10mL, could easily cause OD and even death. Because it's easier to carry around and conceal a smaller amount of GHB solution at high concentration than a large amount of GHB solution at low concentration, such a risk is far from uncommon.
Regarding the issue of GHB dependency and w/d, frankly I'm not going to find you sources. Look it up. With the very little, basic research you'll find details of this. It's that common. And frankly it shouldn't be surprising. GHB is a potent sedative, CNS depressant and gabaergic drug. What's so surprising that it's w/d could pose fatal? Very similar in that regard to other like gabaergic drugs, such as alprazolam, ethanol and even phenibut (I believe GHB is pharmacologically actually most like phenibut in its action of the three listed, although I'd definitely say it's effects are much more intense and w/d easily much more severe).
GHB doesn't taste terrible. I compare it's taste to some mild sweat actually

basically very lightly salty. Very hard if not impossible to tell the difference in concentrations by taste, because the noticeable difference from low/normal/high concentration to "coma causing high" concentration would be a relatively quick death (or long coma I guess).
I really am not able to taste it AT ALL when it's mixed with ANYTHING. Frankly even at higher concentrations in water I can't really notice it. I have yet to hear anything different from any credible source.
GHB is more likely to knock you out for a few hours rather than have you get in trouble/ piss everywhere without remembering what you did the entire night when you overdo it a bit. Assuming no one is robbing/raping you when you are knocked out I would argue that this makes it safer than booze because you are not doing anything.
People also blackout, sleep walk, etc on GHB. The chance of going unresponsible for two to four hours is just as good as going into a coma that last two to four days as killing you. It ALL depends on how much you ingest (and how you react to it too I guess, but at a certain point in the dose everyone responds in a certain way - coma/death).
If you take enough, GHB
is easy to die/overdose from. Much easier than alcohol in that regard, as it's much easier to consume such a large amount of GHB than it is to consume enough much ethanol. Consuming so much booze would be a challange at best frankly. Consuming so much GHB would be no more difficult than drinking a glass of your favorite beverage.
And as it's easier to consume GHB than booze, it's easier to mix it with other CNS depressants, further increasing your risk of OD and harm.
When one understands the risks involved and take the necessary precautions when it comes to choosing to ingest GHB, there is very little risk involved. Same goes for booze. There are more risks for the casual binger or user when it comes to GHB than alcohol, but less when used over the long term. Both have very similar qualities when it comes to dependency and w/d, although I'm tempted to say alcohol is still a bit more nasty. But that's the bottom line. If you're safe about it, not driving or placing yourself and others in similar harm's way, and know what you're doing, particularly how much GHB you're ingesting, there is very little risk involved.
