so the past few days ive been getting absolutely no sleep, maybe 3 to 4 hours before waking up randomly.. sometimes i get to go back to sleep, sometimes not. So yesterday i talked to my dr and got a prescription for ambien. now i have to grind this up because i cant swallow pills..

last night it was nice falling asleep quickly from the meds, but i went to bed about 11pm, woke up at 4:30am; and could not go back to sleep. i am just wondering if it would be ok if i took another ambien if i were to wake up early again tonight? or should i try to stick to something like 2 benadryl

Ambien has a half-life of 2 to 2.9 hours according to wikipedia. the time it takes for the ambien to be half out of ya system. It's a very short acting drug & only really helps ya get to sleep rather than stay asleep. So in theory it should be safe to take another dose 3-4 hrs later. u should need less and if ya just re-dosing less than the directed amount. there wouldnt be any danger imo. it depends how long u wanna sleep for.

I didnt like zolpidem, but i tried to get a high out of em which probably wasnt a good idea cuz it wasnt exactly recreational although some ppl say they can be. antihistamines work fine for insomnia & keep ya asleep.

I've been on ambien 5mg for years, take em very so often. I've always been a wicked light sleeper. So I have the same problem, I take the ambien and go to sleep around 12/1am, but I'll wake up 4/5am, mostly to pee (sorry, but that's what wakes me up, that feeling). So I've kind of started to only take the ambien on nights I'm really really tired and I want to sleep well and get a good nights sleep, and thy work very well. But nights I'm wide awake, can't sleep and need to sleep, I find that things like benedryl or Tylenol pm work better for me, they knock me out faster and I get a deeper sleep, and don't wake up to pee, if I do, I fall right back asleep in 2 seconds!

Sorry I don't really know the answer to your question tho because I myself have never tried it, but if you do try it, would you let me know the results? Cause maybe I could do that instead of asking the Tylenol pm sometimes?

Thank you, and good luck!

Better than not waking up at all i bet!

thats what im thinking - take the ambien to get to sleep, and if i wake up in the middle of the night again ill mix up some benadryl in some water or something..

last night wasnt too bad, went to bed about 11 - 1130 and woke up around 630.. not a bad nights rest, but that feeling of not being able to go back to sleep is annoying

d504, when you wake up in the middle of the night and mix the benedryl in water, is it the capsules? Like do you break them or just throw it in water? And how long does it typically knock you back out for? Like what time do you usually wake up at in the night, take them, then get up in the am? (well or pm if it's noon, lol)?

I actually read somewhere a while ago, I can't remember where..that the brain rests in cycles of an hour and a half. So if you time your sleep patterns so you get 1.5hr increments of sleep (1.5, 3, 4.5, etc..) then you'll wake up with a more rested feeling than you typically do when you don't get that amount. I've been trying to try it, I'll set my alarm, but my inner clock is really good, and it knows when I'm about to be woken up or something, I always get up 20-30 minutes early, oooor, I'll wake up and not want to get up and turn my alarm off and go back to sleep, lol. So I havent confirmed it, but figured I'd mention it and see if anyone else has ever heard of it/tried it? Let us know! :)

If you are able to get to sleep but wake up in the middle of the night you need the 12.5 mg CR. That's what I take, because I have the same problem. It will have a longer half life than regular Ambien and should help you stay asleap through the night. If that doesn't work try Lunesta. It is stronger

i actually havent done this yet.. but its the Benadryl 25mg Kapgels, easily broken up - but ive been mixing them in some soft food like a pudding or yogurt (not really something id like to be doing at 4am) but i usually take the ambien about 10 - 11pm, go to sleep an hour after that, then wake up about 5 hours later..

i used to take that but its more a problem that im "not allowed" to swallow pills or capsules anymore, so i either have to crush them or open them and take the meds that way. Its been a pain so far, but its something i gotta do. i may have to call my doctor and ask him if i can switch to the CR and just try to swallow the thing..

I don't understand why you would not be allowed to swallow pills?

i had gastric sleeve surgery last month, which completely narrows the stomach opening - so its more a preventative thing, but all i gotta do is talk to the surgeon and see if i cant take the pill.. the 12.5mg CR is pretty small anyways so i dont think there will be a problem

Could you just try liquid Tylenol pm or liquid NyQuil? Those would be just as effective, if not better prolly because they're made to help to sleep, benedryl isn't, it's more an antihistamine which it's main use is to alleviate allergies. I feel the liquid Tylenol pm would work better for you in place of both the ambien and the benedryl, and might keep you asleep longer. Then you wouldn't have to cruch or mix anything bc they actually don't taste bad!

yeah i might get that then too, i can take tylenol pm no problem, but over the past few nights ive been getting some more sleep, still not a full 8 hours, but last night was 6+ so im slowly getting more sleep

Well both of that is good!! I have bad problems falling asleep.. Like I sit in bed and watch Netflix, or tv or something, read, and then I just want to keep doing it. I even take the Ambien, or benedryl, and I just stay awake for hours, well some nights. But when I take the tylenol pm.. It's just like bam your down for the count. Lol
