Sorry if this is a silly question but......

Does anyone know why ambien should only prescribed short term. I've been on it for a little over a year now.

In the beginning I took 10 mg every night before bed. Works awesome.

I have ptsd anxiety and insomnia and even if I'm beyond exhausted when I lay down I am suddenly wide awake if i haven't taken anything. I can lay down at 11 pm And be wide awake till 5 am. It sucks. Its every night unless I take ambien or smoke some weed.

In the past couple of months I've tried skipping a few nights without the ambien and only taking the 10 mg when I can't deal with the insomnia. Maybe 2 or 3 times a week.

I also experimented with 20 mg and 30 mg and 40 mg. All on separate occasions and they were very unpleasant experiences so I won't be doing that again

But one other thing I've noticed in the last month is that I can't fall asleep on just the 10 mg of ambien and I've started taking 20 mg to knock me put and help me sleep.

I've also recently started smoking weed and it helps a lot with helping me to not abuse my other prescriptions and it puts me to sleep without any ambien.

My thought process is that I'm better off smoking the weed and taking my drugs as prescribed and save the ambien for when I absolutely need it. I only smoke once a night about an hour before bed so I can enjoy the high for a bit and then go to bed and pleasantly pass out.

Any opinions would be appreciated and sorry if I'm rambling or if this post is too long

Yes, do that. I don't know about Ambien long-term but when I was prescribed it, all I could take was 10 mg and if I wasn't laying down, I'd be falling all over the place. I finally had to stop taking it so I didn't end up seriously injuring myself on one of my falls. Good luck though.

I've never had in the year that I've taken the 10 mg. No sleep walking no sleep driving nothing except quietly falling asleep only very very mild amnesia. And no falling down or being clumsy except for the time I experimented with hhigher doses but I don't like the idea of taking it every single night just to sleep and like I said I recently went to 20 mg because 10 wasn't working anymore.

Plus the sleep from the weed is so much more pleasant and natural

And thank you for your response

Ambien would not be a viable long term solution for insomnia. As your already noticing tolerance how long have you been on Ambien in total? Also I'd taper the Ambien and try to just use weed to sleep or perhaps a rx antihistamine that can be easily obtained from a doctor.

I'm guessing addiction sooooo many people abuse it hell I've even used it a couple times it's good shit

I've been taking it for over ten years. No real dependence or tolerance problems, but I cycle between Ambien and Imovane around every six months to avoid tolerance.

I don't take more than my prescribed dose and have never considered it to have recreational value.

I've been on it for about 1 yr and 4 months now. I was curious and tried 30 mg once and 40 mg once. Both separate occasions.

30 mg - extremely unpleasant
40 mg - beyond extremely unpleasant

They have no recreational value at all for me

I just recently started taking 20 mg before bed because 10 mg didn't help me sleep anymore

It just really sucks that unless I do something I am awake all night long and despite being exhausted and ready for bed the next night I will again be awake for the whole night
