i went to a walk-in clinic because my jaw/tmj has been really hurting for the past ~10 days, also causing horrible headaches. After checking it out, the doc prescribes me tramadol (ugh, gee thanks). So i go home and take a few, forgetting that tramadol lowers the seizure threshold and also acts on seratonin levels. Now, i start to worry. I'm prescribed wellbutrin and lamictal - i know both act on seratonin levels (i'm assuming/hoping short term use of the tramadol won't cause that though), but then also come to find that wellbutrin also lowers the seizure threshold. well great...:\

So, i took about 1mg of klonopin knowing it raises seizure threshold (i know, they potentiate eachother - i have a high tolerance to opiates and benzos). I'm hoping, because of my tolerance to opiates, that i'm going to be ok, but i also am pretty sure tolerance doesn't come into play with tramadol and seizures - i didn't pass the 400mg mark though. I don't have a history of seizures, i know my uncle used to have 'em as a kid though. Am i going to be alright? maybe i can somehow use this as an excuse to get vikes or percs instead? the tramadol is helping a little with the jaw pain, but not doing much of anything with the monstrous headaches (sometimes cause nausea/puking)

any advice? experiences? info? i've checked drugs.com and all but im just worried... kind of ironic seeing the cocktails i've put into me before were probably a lot worse.

also, is the klonopin a good idea if im taking this to help with the whole seizure thing? cuz my script is basically out, can't refill for a week - might have to hit up a friend

how much tramadol are you taking? Its typically like 400+ to lower that threshold -- that being said you have other drugs which could make it easier to obtain on lower dosages

make what easier to obtain? a seizure? that's basically what i was asking - did the doc prescribe me something he shouldn't have because of the other meds i'm taking? i know not to exceed 400mg, but i don't know about combining it with buproprion and lamotrigine... i need to take the medicine but now i'm afraid to. i took the klonopin because i know it helps w/ seizures. i took 200mg which didn't do much for the pain anyways - this was last night and i was ok - today i took half the dose, and now i just feel weird without any relief. (it may just be anxiety - chest area hurts)

thanks for the help though

On a side note, lamotrigine (lamictal) inhibits sodium channels as well as 'modulates presynaptic transmitter release of excitatory amino acids (gultamate and aspartate)' and does not affect serotonin.

cool, good to know. i wasn't too worried about the whole serotonin syndrome thing, just not tryna have a seizure. I wish i knew someone to call to ask this, particularly someone who could change the Rx if needed - dr's office is closed though and pharmacist seemed clueless

^The general consensus around here is that unless you are unusually prone to seizures, the tramadol seizure risk is pretty overblown.

If you are on normal doses of the SSRI and take regular therapeutic doses of tramadol (don't exceed 400mg/day) I'm pretty confident you won't have a seizure.

I agree with this for the most part, but part of me still feels slightly at risk when i take a 350 mg dose of tram. I get this feeling that i can only describe as approaching a seizure.:\

^well i'd definitely refrain from taking that amount in the future if that's the feeling you get.

gonna shift this over to BDD now as this kind of subject has been covered to death in here.
