Alprazolam 2 mg wafers VS. Alprazolam 2 mg bars

Hi disherten, I am a pharmacist. If these really are the "wafers" (the orally disintegrating tablets) that is generic for Niravam, not Xanax and your pharmacy made an error. However, I am not sure that is the case here. I believe this particular tablet is a true generic for Xanax, just shaped differently.

While in theory I agree with sekio that alprazolam is alprazolam, in practice we must make sure our patients feel their medicines are working even if it is psychological. It may be that your pharmacy is limited to what they can order for CDS's as many of the chains have put restrictions on the pharmacists ordering specific brands.

I will check for you tomorrow if I remember.

Thank you guys for all the posts! I know she will be extra appreciative in the morning!! An especially to the pharmacists your knowledge is very insightful into what may be going on! I was just wondering if they did totally f up what action could she take to get this corrected? As a pharmacist your self?? Thanks again guys! Every little bit helps!!

If it is wrong it is wrong and every pharmacist must correct that error. They are bound by the law and most company policies to do so, not to mention it is ethically the right thing to do. If they refuse, and it pains me to say this, you must complain formally.

Like I said, this may not be the case so hold off on that right now. It will be difficult to solve as most places wont take back a controlled substance if no error was made. Perhaps an rx for 2 of the 1mgs would work but that opens up a can of worms with the monitoring programs. Best bet is to have the doctor speak to the pharmacy if going this route. They can then document everything and everyone is in the clear.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, Ill talk to her and figure out first off error, or no error. I have literally never even seen "wafer" version of xanax.. Maybe Ill invest in some good old fashioned googling while all my fellow Bluelilghters sleep, Thank you again! Your knowledge has been super helpful into the insight of how it works behind the counter :] Even for some topics similar, knowing whats going on back there is the first step to solving the problem efficiently :] :D

This is a well known phenomena, it hasn't only happened to you...but that doesn't mean it isn't "in your head".

it's about the difference of molecular structure, the way they are manufactured, the way they metabolize, and how different it is compared to what my body and brain chemistry has been used to for the past years

As far as that goes, xanax is alprazolam is 8-Chloro-1-methyl-6-phenyl-4H-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a][1,4]benzodiazepine, no matter what kind of pill it is packaged in there is no difference in molecular structure, is no difference in how your body metabolizes it, and is no different action on the receptors in your brain and body. The placebo effect is a powerful but poorly understood phenomena, but we do know that the stronger the belief the more powerful the effect and I think that was the main point Sekio was trying to make, the sooner you can realize that there is no difference in active ingredient(and therefore physiological effect) within your pills the sooner they will be effective.

So I check and this is an approved generic for Xanax just not shaped like a bar. Talk to the pharmacist and see what they can do and good luck.
