So a long time ago, I was rolling off of some pretty good pills, but towards the end I noticed my upper lip was a little bit swollen. I asked my friends and they said it was barely noticeable, but I could feel it. I pretty much disregarded it, I figured I had probably just chewed it or something without noticing. But a few weeks ago this girl I know was rolling (not same pills though) and the week after she told me that her upper lip was swollen for a day or two after she had taken it. Very noticeably swollen too, she showed me pictures. So my question is, is this some kind of allergic reaction, and to what? I've researched around and haven't really found any references to MDMA allergies, I think I read somewhere it's almost impossible to be allergic to it. If that's true, would it have been an adulterant of some kind that we were allergic to?

Assuming that it was only containing mdma then 100% you chewed your lip. Its actually very common.

Could it have been an alergic reaction to something else in the pill? possibly but as there are a billion other things that could be added to the pill, who knows whatr it may have been.

Most likely answer though is Yes you chewed your lip

That's kinda what I figured.. Upper lip though? Seems like it wouldn't be as common. And I've seen lips when they swell up because of allergies, and this looked very similar.

Also, so MDMA allergy isn't possible?

Chewing on lips is very common. If I don't have something else to chew on, I'll do it too, and my upper and/or lower lip will be swollen the next day. Swelling, redness, soreness, and open sores in the mouth that you notice right after rolling are invariably due to gurning.

My lips swell, but not because I chew them. I purse my lips together, like I'm putting on chapstick or something. I also suck on my lower lip or the roof of my mouth (my gums will get swollen up there.) Just pay close attention to what you do with your mouth. It's probably something you don't even notice you're doing, or it's a normal thing that you're doing A LOT.

I always catch my friends frowning and it always turns out they're doing something weird with their mouth without realizing it!

Allergic reactions happen everywhere that the substance causing the allergy is. When you take a drug it goes everywhere in your body, so if there was an allergic reaction it wouldn't just be in your lip. Dollars to donuts, you bit your lip. :)

I believe an allergy to MDMA probably isn't possible. The MDMA molecule is smaller than the sorts of things the immune system usually reacts to (the immune system attacking something it shouldn't is what causes allergies.) It's also similar in shape to molecules that are normally found all over our bodies (like dopamine and adrenaline), so if your immune system did feel like attacking an MDMA molecule, it would probably attack these other similar molecules as well (in which case you wouldn't be alive to be reading this.) :)

OP, my last roll after dropping a couple I then dissolved half a tab under my tongue. The next day under my tongue was swollen HUGE and was painful and lasted for several days. Obviously because of the location it was not because of chewing.

My next thought was maybe there is something else in the pills. I had tested them first of course and they had a good reputation (blue star pokeballs). So I sent them in to ecstasydata.org.

The result have not been posted, but I did find out by email just a few hours ago that they were MDMA 5, Caffeine 1

So, yes, you can be allergic to MDMA and I happen to be one of those people.

This is informative. Thank you.
But what would be the explanation for under avcpl's tongue to swell up where gurning wasn't a possibility?

Cali, I think perhaps I and others are using the word allergic too loosely.

Maybe not so much an "allergen" but an "irritant" that we are especially sensitive to.

I know I didn't bite my mouth and there is a good chance you or the girl you know didn't either--especially if you chewed your pills.
Plus, taking strong pills orally does make me nauseous, causing me to throw up on one occasion.

Have you experienced any sort of allergic reaction prior to this experience? And, have you consumed it since then?

It is possible that the remenants of the pill could have somehow scratched your mouth? Or, is it possible that you actually just had a canker sore?

I have not consumed since then. I don't think I had a canker sore (have never had one before in that location). I don't think it was a case of the pill scratching, since it was a crumbly pill and did dissolve. Plus there was no specific mark, like there would be if it was a scratch.

I have no known allergies. I'm thinking that just the high concentration of mdma on such a sensitive area irritated it so much.

Interesting.

I have to agree with your post that there may have been some sort of irritant in the pill rather than actually having an allergic reaction.

That's awesome that you used ecstasydata.org. I have been promoting their website since the drastic cut in testing fee. They should hire me for marketing ;) not that I wouldn't do it for free...because I would :)

Yes, I'm a huge proponent of their service. The only drawback now is the turn-around time which is about four weeks.

But it is the ONLY way to know what is in your pills and at what RATIO. An EZ-Test can give you a rough idea, but will not tell you if you have a pipe/mdma combo pill, which is what I thought might be happening.

look at the mecke and marquis results to these very different pills:

But what would be the explanation for under avcpl's tongue to swell up where gurning wasn't a possibility?

A few possible factors:

Physical trauma to the delicate skin from the pill being rubbed around (even a little, unintentionally.)

Chemical irritation (just because MDMA is pretty safe once evenly distributed through your body doesn't mean your cells like to be bathed in a very highly concentrated dose of it, as would happen to the skin in direct contact with the pill.)

Opportunistic bacterial infection secondary to the first two irritations.

Something else entirely. :) (Sometimes it really is just chance when two things happen at the same time.)

In response to the question...

I noticed that this question has been up on the internet for a while but I had just found this and was just researching now.
And so first I would like to say that just about anything can give people allergic reactions.I'm honestly not exaggerating. So its not impossible for you to have them, it's just less likely. An allergy to ecstasy is somewhat rare but not to say it isn't possible.
Im reading the comments below and the word irritants is used and I think its appropriate for your situation. If it was really an allergic reaction you had to the pill and not just you bitting or you playing with your lips then I would just be a little careful taking them.It is kinda weird that only your top lip got a reaction though.

A comment below says that an "allergy to MDMA probably isn't possible..." and I'm sure some people probably agree.
I on the other hand don't think so, I am on of those people that get reactions to some ecstasy pills.

3 years ago I had tried ecstasy for the first time and frankly liked it.So I used it again and on the 3rd time I used ecstasy I had 2 Blue A's pills in which during the "roll" I had noticed my face and arms had gotten a little red.I thought it was normal, since ecstasy does get you up.Towards the end of my roll ,besides my redish tone :o my friends had noticed that my whole face had swelled up significantly & later my whole body.My skin didn't feel as smooth as it normally would, it felt slightly rough. This had worried me a bit so I took a benadryl after, but that didn't help at all. :| The next day I was still as fat as a sumo wrestler and even more so. On the 3rd day the swelling started to go down but I started to peel all over my body.My hands, feet and nose looked like they were covered in dryed up Elmer's glue.Since benadryl wasn't working for me I just let myself heal.I figured it was nothing that severe because after all these nasty side effects it had just caused me external effects.Other than that I felt normal.I didn't have any trouble breathing or anything like that.I was back to my usual self 2 weeks after. =D The difference between these pills and the other ones that I had tried before were the white dots they had all around them. They were probably mixed with something else.
I was online looking for similar situations and came across this page.I really don't know why this happens to me but if someone has a clue please let me know.

Allergy or perhaps:

A potential side-effect is water-poisioning or " hyponatraemia." If you are also drinking either water or alcohol it is highly possible that there was an imbalance in the bodies sodium. This is the old "sodium/potassium pump" that you use to teach about in high school. There are suggestions to limit the H2O intake to 500ml per hour, and eating salty food snacks. Some reccomend drinking OJ.

Sounds pretty bad. But are you sure it's related to MDMA? I sometimes get an allergic reaction (not as bad as what you described) just from working out in the gym. I'll be running on the treadmill and suddenly my face turns all red and I start getting spots all over my body. I think it's important to remember that you also do a lot of other things on E that could trigger an allergic reaction (like being in a place full of hot sweaty people).

I am not saying that you're experience wasn't directly related to MDMA, it sounds like it was, but I just putting it out there that this is a quite complicated questions with a lot of variables that are difficult to evaluate correctly.

you defintely just chewed on your lip....happened to me at edc 2010...my upper lip was s o swollen it was seriously touching my nose and i had no idead until i got back to car and looked in the mirror....bastards took my gum at the gate. just make sure u got gum and ur chill. north county reppin i seee i miss sd. just moved:(
