all the people who get difficulty urinating

Yeah sitting down works wonders even if it's a little imasculating. The key is not to strain. Find something else to think about(like the counting thing) and usually it'll just start flyin'.

Sitting down to piss may also help.

It's a pain in the ass with opiates, especially if you're drinking alcohol which is a diuretic.

That's what I do, too. I didn't realize so many people had that problem. I rarely pee standing up any more, actually. After 2 years of methadone and another two of Suboxone, I'm stuck.

I find that reading helps a lot. If I'm stuck, I'll read drivers licenses and shit from my wallet, but I like to keep a brochure or something in my pocket for these situations (at home I have TIME and a novel by the can at all times. Actually, if it weren't for urinary retention, my reading wouldn't be a quarter of what it is now).

I find that sitting down usually helps. Sometimes when sitting will not work, I try leaning over the toilet while standing putting my palms on the wall in front of me to relieve the strain on my legs but still allowing gravity to help me with my bladder. That natural force of gravity tends to lend a helping hand in getting the flow to start downwards opposed to sitting down. So this may also help someone. I've yet to try the counting odd numbers thing, but I'll give it a shot next time. Thanks.

Sitting down with the bathtub/faucet running is the best way to make it happen..if that fails, then I've gotta wait it out for awhile :(

I find that if I turn the faucet on, sit down and begin using my hand to push on my bladder (right where the stomach meets the abdomen, you will know when you feel it) it usually works. If it doesn't, I alternate between standing and sitting while pushing on my bladder. You will go in 5 minutes or less guaranteed.

I don't think it's a good idea to push on your bladder. I used to and it only left me in pain.

LOL, I need to this when I'm on a high amount of opiates.

Thanks for that tip!

No kidding, exact same thing happens to me. I'll sit down on the toliet to piss sometimes when I'm like this, but then I start nodding off. Sometimes I'll kinda come out of my nod and get up only to realize I've been nodding off on the toliet for the past hour and a half. %)

sitting down is almost a must for me when on opiates. Also, turning the faucet on and running some warm water on your hand or palm seems to always dramatically help the situation.

True. I've left myself with bruises doing it before. The key is to not over do it, and not to push too hard. Only try it when you HAVE to go.

At the very least try alternating between sitting and standing. For some reason that really works.

Now if somebody could find a way to deal with constipation, that would be great. Laxatives don't do a damn thing for me.

Uhh I have this problem o multiple drugs its terrible. Its really bad when I drink alcohal After like 5 beers I cant pee anymore talk about uncomfortable

Yep. And run warm water from the sink and spread your legs as far apart as you can. It also helps to push like you are trying to take a shit, it may be hard to do because of opiates effects on the colon and the other muscles in that area (it feels like you have no control over them and cant make them contract for the life of you, but with some work it can be done), but you should still be able to manage it. It works.

ya, sitting down while putting pressure on the bladder with your hand works well also, but leaning forward as far as possible also helps put pressure on the bladder.also try pushing hard(not to hard though, dont strain yourself!) and if you still cant go after several minutes, drink a tall glass of water or a diuretic such as coffe, red bull, or a caffinated beverage like coca-cola if you dont want all that caffiene.if you cant go and it hurts really bad, you may need to visit a hospital if it gets too extreme to handle, but id rather drink a cup or two of coffe or something before visting the ER because you cant piss, lol.good luck! and greetings to all bluelighters, im new as of today!!i look forward to chattintg with all you people, you all seem cool as hell.......

I sit and find myself peeing within seconds everytime. And I do OC almost everyday, mabye I've just gotten used to it?

I just had a bad experience of being constipated and had urine retention at the same time; felt like i was going to explode.. Here's some notes I've gathered from various threads and experiences.. i'm not an expert but i hope this helps some people
1) Pushing is risky; you can rupture your bladder. If uine retention gets too bad you have to go to A&E (or ER in the US) and have a catheter shoved down your urethra to manually open up the sphincter of the baldder. Worst case scenario is your bladder could rupture, and it could also affect your kidmeys.

So if it really starts to feel bad, get thee to hospital quickly.

2) The use of diuretics is also sketchy. On the one hand, they are supposed to make you need to pass water, but the problem with drug-induced urine retention is that it is affecting the muscles. It's possible that drinking any more liquid, be it water or a diuretic, could make the situation worse, as you are adding more liquid to the problem! My feeling from reading various info is that when you have drug-induced urine retention, you mustn't drink more liquid; you must wait for it to pass, and try to use psychological and physical techniques to persuade your bladder to relax. These techniques include:

*sitting down to pee, this is definitely a good idea.
*squatting to pee; the western method of sitting on the toilet is contrary to the way our organs have evolved
*try sitting down on the toilet facing the wrong way. this sounds bizarre, but it puts you in a different physical position. You can relax more with arms resting on the cistern, and you are putting less pressure on your abdomen in general.
*slow trickling water can owkr nicely as a psychological trigger. sometimes though, this puts me in the mindset of 'i need to piss!' and increases the anxiety. So I go for a gentle stream..
*put one hand in warm water in the sink. this is nice
* obviously, try not to think about it too much. A really frustrating thing is the catch 22 situation: once you feel yourself relaxing and the piss finally coming, you feel excited/relieved and your body tenses up again!

* There is a way of pushing without straining whilst relaxing the rest of your body at the same time. this is hard to explain and i can''t always do it, but it is a technique i am working on...

*there is a psychosomatic element to all of this, obviously. Sometimes i think I need to pee when i actually don't; i've just got anxious about it. Ultimately, the more your mind relaxes, the more your body relaxes, and the more your body relaxes, the more your mind relaxes. This is the basics of relaxation techniques and hypnosis.

* I find changing positions (sitting, standing, crouching, then facing the other way etc) regukarly can sometimes just trigger a change, and lo and behold, the piss finally comes! then, i try not to physiologically respond with too much joy and relief, and apply a tiny bit of pressure on the bladder (this mysterious technique i'm still working on) i can maintain the flow, and the deed has finally been done.

So, I hope some of this helps. If there is a drug or chemical which counteracts the opiate/stimulant induced urine retention problem I'd love to know about it, because this is a big problem for me, and more immediately worrying and dangerous than constipation. I just had both at the same time, and couldn't work out which was which; i was seriously fucking bloated and it was pretty scary. Finally a big dose of bicarbonate of soda in alittle water got my guts working again, and the pressure was off...

Like i say, don't take my words as gospel, they are just personal reflections.
There are some scientists on this forum, hope fully someone can help us get somewhere with this problem.

My main tentative conclusions are that drinking more fluid may well be counterproductive and possibly very dangerous; that there are psychological and physical posture tricks you can use that help, and lastly, when taking opiates or stimulants, don't drink beer! Stick to hard liquor if you must drink alcohol. If you have a dry mouth, try ice cream or yoghurt. Drink as little fluid as possible when you are actually on the drugs (drink healthy amounts when detoxing/living your healthy lifestye).

take care everyone

I have terrible trouble with this also when sober but worse when intoxicated, counting odd numbers is the first thing that has helped except sitting and straining (which I would rather not do), so cheers for that.

Is there a trick to get your po out before it gets a concrete assraping rock?

yes. fibers + water. it works wonders.

OP: thanks, will use next time on opiates.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem! Opiates are the culprit for me too. I'll try the counting thing and let u know if it helps. Thanks 4 the advice!

my special trick is to squat down a bit. not all the way, just bend my knees like half a foot down, and then lean against the toilet with my knees. i then make several very forced and hard attempts at peeing, and not letting the agression and effort towards peeing go down even as i let breaths of air in. i take short breaks when i feel lightheaded or like im gonna pass out, and i also just like to sit down when i get too tired of that. i often alternate between sitting down and the squatting technique. when i sit down i also like to push up against my lower stomach a bit while i try to pee too. with all the little personal tricks i have i can usually squeeze a pee out even on the highest doses of heroin. #2 is another story, i can do it but it takes about twice the time and most of the time i cant be bothered to take a #2 while im really really high

*edit* lol i just remembered that i should probably let you guys know that you have to be careful how hard you bear down and push while you are trying to relieve yourself while high. i once tried to poop so hard that i broke a blood vessel in my eye because i was high on opiates. its funny now but it wasn't funny at the time because it hurt really bad and it was hard explaining what happened to my friends and family.. you catch my drift?

I just drink 2 or 3 cups of water and that always works for me and im a heavy methadone user.....
