All men play on 10 (METAL THREAD 3.0)

black legions, dude. I dunno if that scene registered much above the radar but it made waves underground. Mutiilation, Vlad Tepes, Torgeist; at least some portion of the French metal population is fucked up and twisted enough to have produced these guys. Horribly executed and a bit ridiculous in general, but they were the main influence in the whole wave of 'depressive' black metal here in the US. Seeing as how pretty much every other scene has burned out I gotta hand it to em.

That said,

How many soldiers does it take to defend France?

I'm looking for more bands that are essentially death metal, but incorporate breakdowns in their music as well. Some of the first to incorporate this style were Suffocation and Dying Fetus. Some call this genre, "deathcore," but I'm not sure if that term has taken off in the metal vernacular.

Some such bands that I already enjoy include:

All Shall Perish
Skinless
Through The Eyes of the Dead
Despised Icon

This wikipedia definition of "deathcore" includes some other bands, which I either haven't heard of, or don't consider the type of stuff I'm looking for:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathcore

For example, they include Glasscasket and The Red Chord, two bands I love, yet these bands are more grindcore with breakdowns, in my opinion.

If anyone has feedback on the bands listed in the wiki article or can suggest other bands of this style, let me know.

Cannibal Corpse has some of the best damned mean and brutal breakdowns in the buisiness imo, but that really isnt a frequent trait. Not like thats something new to offer you. Course i know youre allready familiar with Skinless as well. Malevolent Creation, on some of their albums, have some totally killer breakdowns. Ill think about this for a bit.

SonOf, check out the bands I recommended to the guy asking about Glasscasket on the fifth page and the bands Mortal Treason and Desolate Demise if you can find any of their stuff (I don't think they are signed to a label). My girlfriend is really into this stuff, I'll ask her if she knows of any other bands like them. Their shows are always infested with straight edge pricks though.

Edit: Check out Job For A Cowboy too.

One of my all time fav death metal breakdowns is in Cryptopsy's "Soar Envision, Sore Vision"

thats cool u think that, most people dont like the albums with Mike DiSalvo as the vocalist, but i like those two the best. I prefer Whisper Supremacy tho.

I can't really complain about any Cryptopsy albums to be perfectly honest. They could have a muppet doing vocals and would still shred. And like you Wood, I am in the minority and like Disalvo better.

no matter how talented the musicianship may be, i will never be able to take any french musician seriously smiply because they are from france. sorry.

That is so true. You said it beautifully.

stop ripping on fucking french musicians and ignoring my goddamn jokes about their fucking country.

yah i like all of cryptopsy's stuff, their first two albums are fucking berserker rage death metal. but i prefer the middle-era lol.

back to your breakdown cravings, do you have anything Exhumed has put out? They do a lot of breakdowns similiar to dying fetus, but i wouldnt relate it to anything youd get from hardcore/metalcore.

i love this cd. even how crudely created the album cover is. the recording quality is pretty low end, but its some badass death/grind in the vein of Mortician.

So, anyone been into a band called Soulfly recently? I know I have!

Yeah, they're very similar bands man. I only listen/ed to "Dark Ages", maybe the others suck though. I don't like Sepultura THAT much (same as Soulfly really). I think of them both as perfect examples of excellent "mediocre" metal, nothing "great" or grand, but just good and fun, artistic and pretty cool heavy listening.

Sepultura mediocre????? Early Sepultura similar to Soulfly????? They are shit nowadays but Schizophrenia, Arise and Beneath the Remains are all masterpieces. Shame on you. ;)

But I haven't listened to the album you're talking about so I guess I shouldn't talk shit, but I'm going to assume it's like all other Soulfly. But you can listen to them all you want, I just think that they suck.

They sold out. :p

Proof that Sepultura own:

I only listened to Chaos A. D. thoroughly. The albums you mentioned are definitely more old school, but I'm not that into that, so I wouldn't be able to rank it.

Yeah it's kind of an acquired taste I guess, but those are their best work by far. Kind of hard to listen to at first.

No, it's not that, I'm just not into metal enough to listen to most stuff; only the crazy top A+ bands, like Death, Emperor, etc. The stuff even nonmetalheads often know about. Excepting retarded American cheeseburger metal though (you know what I'm talkin about), "butt metal" as it's called.

you listened to chaos a.d. and think sepultura is mediocre?

damn.

i fucking love that album.

Shit man, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it. Mediocre isn't the right word...maybe..."of minimal grandeur" is better?
