All men play on 10 (METAL THREAD 3.0)

New Metallica single released. It's an eight minute "One" clone, with awesome production, some seriously awesome little metal bits, and rad soloing. I'm absolutely not kidding when I say Metallica is back.

Yes, I said...

METALLICA IS BACK

>>I find the funeral doom stuff REALLY REALLY boring....>>

Where would early Cult of Luna fit?
I'm not well-versed enough to discriminate between different types of dooom.

^Their more 'just-doom' though they expanded somewhat on that genre. You'll know funeral/black doom by its paralleles with black metal- shoddy production, growling/screeching, but ULTRA slow, as in maybe 30BPM or less....Cult of Luna certainly have the heavy sludgey detuned guitar sound but less fullon or intense.

Ebola you would probably quite like Sunn0))) (said as simply "Sun")....basically two guys (Greg Anderson and Stephen O'malley who are topnotch doom/drone/experimental musicians (from Goatsnake, Khanate, Burning Witch). Their sound is immensely low frequency distorted wall-of-sound guitar, masses of feedback, undulating bass, really really long songs....played at maximum volume, this stuff is wild, no beats as such, but deeply embedded melodies and arrangements plus they wear hooded capes!. Literally noise, but with a purpose and intelligence behind it. The 'music' is varied; Sunn0))) played with doomy group Boris and made a quite sweet sounding album, and then when teaming up with some black metal people (Xasthur, Lurker of Chalice) made an Aalbum called the Black One...which is very creepy, uber-dark, monotone weirdness. One track features a guy called Malefic (aka Xasthur) locked in a coffin, in a hearse, with a microphone just screaming...yet the entire song is actually really GOOD, it build in intenisty over 18minutes which feel like 1000 years.

I dunno, I really like this beatless metal stuff, Southern Lord records is the predmonant label, releasing from black metal to blues to something by Dave Grohl, to really odd ambient stuff like Earth (!!!!). I think the label is owned by the guys from Sunn0)))....kinda the psychedelic 'metal' record label.

A more traditional sludgey band like Cult of Luna is Unearthly Trance, but they are a lot simpler and more aggressive....

It sounds nice, quite a Fade to Black Riff....I just can't take Hetfields vocals anymore though, but your right, the song is certainly more metal then they've been for a long time. HUUUUGE drums, as per norm, but ahem they sound good....Looking forward(ish) to the album (I think...;))

metallica sued their own fans. i dont care if they produce music that could rival sepultura's schizophrenia. they can fucking rot in motherfucking hell.

Awesome new albums ive recently gotten:

Byzantine - Oblivion Beckons
One of the best gothemburg style thrash bands ive heard ina LONG time. Fucking tight cd, get this now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh6uzIpL_SM (i couldnt find one of their better tracks on utub, so this is some kid drumming along to them. IMO "The Gift of Discernment" is their best track).

Origin - Antithesis
These guys are sick. If you havent heard them yet, youre either not into death metal, or asleep. Some of the FASTEST technical death metal youll ever heard. Fucking love this shit, its like Monstrosity on steroids and methamphetamine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIMW0aHN0ks

Their first album is totally sick too btw.

The Sword - Gods of the Earth

Not nearly as impressive as Age of Winters, but still a kickass CD. I dont really like the more power metaly direction theyre going, I wish theyd stick with the 70s groove/doom kinda stuff. U gotta get like 6 tracks deep before it really sounds like their last album, but this whole cd is real good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL7ndxWgW5A

Overkill - Immortalis
Posted above about it. I like this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZuiSclz87w

Nachmystium - Assassins
Pretty cool experimental black metal, they do a lot of synthesized psychedelic parts that are pretty trippy.

Hmm, I'm enjoying lotsa metal at the moment.

Blind Guardian- full discography (thanks Internetz :D). Utterly over-the-top brilliant power/speed metal. Beware, it will lead friends to desert you though. "Nightfall In Middle Earth" is sensational.

Unearthly Trance- Electrocution. Pretty standard stuff from these guys, really doomy sludgetastic stuff. Something oddly compelling about it though. Shoddy lyrics however.

Rotting Christ- Theogonia. These guys are by far the best black metal band still around. Very powerful and melodic music, and actually nice vocals, for a shrieking cat-on-fire. Non serviam bitches!!!

Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Won't say nothin bout that one.

Southern Lord records- various artists. My favaorite metal label; more on the psychedelic, droney, doom side of things, lotsa 70's stoner bands (Goatsnake, Weedeater...) black metal (Xasthur, Wolves In The Throneroom) thrash (Lair of the Minotaur) and doom/psychedelic/drone (Earth, Boris, Sunn0))), Khanate). The last three groups there are utterly awesome in all ways.

Psycroptic- Symbols of Failure. Unbearably technical death metal, uber-fast, riffs that change by the millisecond, drums played by a cyborg plus the singer has a bad tendency to kinda hum along with the songs in a death growl. For all that, its funny and interesting. Shit though, as with most ultra-technical DM bands.

Also been playing some Graveworm, Electric Wizard, Dark Funeral, The Third and The Mortal, yadadadada.

Go metal! :D

thrash (Lair of the Minotaur)

man, those guys fucking ROCK!

other bands i've been rocking-

1. Celtic Frost - Monotheist (this album is so heavy...love it. unfotunately these guys just broke up, i think)

2. Big Business - Here Comes the Waterworks (these 2 guys rock, and they are now 1/2 of the Melvins. i was fortunate enough to catch them last summer with the melvins, so they warmed up then also played with the melvins)

3. Early Man - Closing In (these guys are so "real"... whatever that means)

4. Iota - S/t (i really don't know much about these guys but it's super psychedelic....the 1st and last 2 songs on this album i could do without but overall it's pretty good stuff.)

5. Wooden Shjips - S/t (kinda groovy psychedelic fuzzed-out rock)

6. Porn(the men of) - (Dale Crover of the melvins is the drummer on one of their albums, can never remember which. i think they only have 2 albums and they are both really good.)

7. The Atomic Bitchwax - (they kinda remind me of Fu Manchu.....hard rockin' california vibey-ness)

8. Devin Townsend - Ziltoid Attacks - (it's about an alien that comes to earth to get the perfect cup of coffee before he time travels...because he can't time travel without coffee....funny stuff...and really good . his other solo stuff is good also)

9. Tia Carrera - S/T - (all instumental stoner rock)

10. the Dub Trio - (they have 2 albums, the 1st is dub reggae meets heavy metal, the 2nd is less dub reggae-ish. the drummer is SICK SICK SICK. they also were the backing band for mike pattons peeping tom touring band)

Okay, I'm starting a new metal project.

I'm currently recording a (don't laugh) metal opera dealing with vampires. It'll be a six song EP called One Way Existence. One song is already recorded, and the rest will follow soon. All the lyrics are written out already. The style of metal is going to be in a somewhat early '80s NWOBHM vibe with a modern heaviness. Think stuff like Mercyful Fate, Satan, Angel Witch, Venom, etc., with thrashy death vocals. So basically, melodic death metal with a bit of old-school British metal thrown in, and a lot of acoustic soft bits scattered throughout.

Here's an excerpt of some of the lyrics.
Yeah, they're cheesy, but what else am I gonna do with this style of music? :)

"The Express Train To Hell (Is Fueled By Vengeance)"

the smoke is clearing,
silently away like creeping fog on the bay.
suddenly I feel so alone,
I've finally come home and there's nowhere to go.

these towers feel so empty,
my voice echoes amongst the shadows of the flames.
he lays on the floor soaked in blood,
the embodiment of all that I ever was.

I've learned that the express train to hell,
is fueled by vengeance.
and the penance for those wrapped up in its locomotion,
is the notion that their lives have no real meaning.

I've learned that the express train to hell,
is what I've been riding my whole life.
and the sentence I've been given because I ain't been livin',
is the wicked regret that I wasted myself.

all these years spent searching for truth,
the truth of finding and slaying you,
and finally when the deed was all done,
no sense of relief or feeling that I'd won.

Nile: Those Whom The Gods Detest

Nile+-+Those+Whom+The+Gods+Detest+%282009%29.jpg

Album is fucking incredible. Ive had it 2 days, and have listened to it 9 times through. I love this, its just as good as Ithyphallic (although, still doesnt come near In Their Darkened Shrines, my personal fav).

Lyrically its a bit less interesting than some other albums, I think its about a muslim prophet entering the Egyptian pantheon and challenging some of the demigods' and dieties' supremacy. I found prior albums to be a lot more headspacey, but this album is a lot more forward and brutal.

4/5 spikes.

IMO Nile is THE best band in Death Metal. Cant wait to see them tour this winter.

I'm loving all the music I'm seeing posted.

Recently, I've been revisiting most of the Skyclad discography - haven't heard them? Get Prince of the Poverty Line now!

Also, I've got Trans Siberian Orchestra's latest, Night Castle... pile of turd. I adore Savatage, found Beethoven's Last Night enjoyable, but this is nigh on intolerable.

Warning's Watching From a Distance is another recently acquired album. Good, but slightly overrated, nice to have some doom metal with clean vocals though. Same for another recent purchase, Hourglass' Oblivious to the Obvious. Good, but very overlong and suffers from many common progressive metal flaws.

Recently got In Mourning's Shrouded Divine. Superior melodic death metal, I really like it.

Finally, been listening to my FAVOURITE thrash metal album of all time: Artillery's By Inheritance! I love it! I've never explored further in their discography though, for some reason.

ATM, I'm listening to The Angelic Process, Sonata Arctca, Dark Funeral (latest album rocks!! :)), Paysage D'Hiver (awesome black ambient) and Astral Luminous a lot lately.

I have been listening to a band named Long Distance Calling. Postrock/metal out of Germany. An amazing band to be lifted to.

^I take it your a Xasthur fan? His music is utterly superb, All Reflections Drained is one of my albums of the year.

Have you heard Alcest or Amesoeurs? They (same guy, Neige from Peste Noire) play knda post-black/post-punk stuff. I don't like Alcest a lot, but Amesoeurs are great.

Peste Noire, however, is the best black metal band :)

I dunno, the album is unutterably punishing, drumming from hell, and great riffs, but I tend to think Evangelion by Behemoth is possbly one of the best peces of occulty metal since their last album.

Do you like Belphegor? Their latest, Walpurgis Rites, is fucking great, pretty simply, but it will blow your head off :)

Horns!!

Never heard of em but I will check em out, thanks. Havent heard of any of the aforementioned actually so I will try and give em all a look.

Into any doom? I have been listening to a lot of Esoteric lately. They fucking crush shit man.

Mmm, Rotting Christ. I almost forgot about them.

And I see Krisiun is mentioned in the archived thread, but not here. We can't let them fall to the wayside!

This'd be my top 10 list:
Eluveitie
Ensiferum
Maiden
Korpiklaani
Yngwie J. Malmsteen
Slayer
Sabbath
Tyr
Morbid Angel
Metallica (early albums)

I'm a very big folk/viking metal fan btw.
