All Indicators Point to a Softening of America's Harsh Marijuana Laws

The problem lies not just in the laws, but the indoctrinated inhabitants. I know so many people that are scared of change, and scared of drugs. They are called Conservatives (i dont neccesarily mean this politically, im not just talking about "republicans"/neocons). I think the US is built on the notion that most of the people who live here are morons, with the minority wanting progress, and the majority just stuck in their daydreams of whip-cracking and slave-raping. This is a country that runs on majority, after all, who is just about to finish his second fucking term as commander-in-chief?

The problem is, you have all these fox-induced xenophobics running around, and they are the majority, even though casual polls indicate most people are for legalization of marijuana, im not so sure about recreational use.

However, the truth is, the cops really have been cracking down just a bit less on kids who have a dimebag in their pocket.

EDIT: I just cant get over how stupid you have to be to keep drugs and especially POT illegal after going over all the pros and cons. How was the mafia fueled? Prohibition. History repeats. And I hope it goes full circle once again. But really, we'd be getting rid of the "scum" that people so often claim they want to get rid of, profitting from drugs. However, they dont consider deli owners part of this category. Alcohol and nicotine, the most dangerous drugs on the planet, hello? But nvm that, you always hear shit from the media like "oh drugs devastated this family because the son went to prison and is getting it doggystyle, its so sad". Well, who put that kid in jail? The govt did. Not the dealer. And yes, this way you do not have to deal with the "black market" at all. But no, if we legalize it, lots of kids are gonna start smoking pot. And most of of all we care about the children. Well the children are already smoking, and most of them have connects up the block, and can get weed a hell of a lot easier than beer. Dealers dont ask for ID. And has this country lost its' mind, the money earned from this would certainly cover the debt, and they could tax the shit out of pot if they wanted to, and sales would prolly increase. Not to mention this is a country that will pimp anything for money. But we have those damn conservative values with undertones of racism, and its like we're back to square 1, cuz you guys all know that cannabis was scheduled because of xenophobia, and i guess that hasn't changed.

So... what is really holding us back?

"Because the Supreme Court has ruled that federal drug laws trump state drug laws"

If they would simply read the document they are supposed to interpret they would find that the feds have no business making drug laws.

I think you hit the nail on the head, at least partially: xenophobia. People are afraid of people who aren't like them. The non-druggies are afraid of the pot heads, the "non-druggies" (at least when nobodies watching) are afraid of the real non-druggies finding out about them, the pot heads are afraid of the crack heads, and so on. Everyones so hung up on what each other thinks of them, and of being forced into that other person's way of life as a result. I personally hate crack. with a passion. ive seen some scary ass crack heads. But that doesn't mean i would presume to tell someone that they cant do it. How would I feel if they told me to stop rolling, or smoking? Ya know? But I think, slowly, we *are* having a cultural shift towards caring more about each other, and less about what each other are *doing*. The younger generations, partially mine (bout to turn 21), but moreso the next few (20 and younger) seem to be much less xenophobic, and more likely to accept people for who they are. For the most part anyway, that's what I've seen. And while Obama may or may not be the perfect solution, at least he's taking steps in the right generation. Meanwhile, more and more of the younger, more liberal, more caring group seem to be advancing. And that gives me hope that eventually, even if it does take years, we will see a major change. [/end rambling] :)

^agreed. that is what i hope for. i am exactly ur age btw, turning 21. and as far as obama goes, out of the 3 candidates that have a shot (too bad ron paul dropped out) i think obama's policies are the best out of the 3, and i like the fact that hes an open drug user (or "former user"... altho i have a feeling he prolly still smokes up every now and then, who knows), and becuz of his policies on the war, and on change. Even if hillary is elected, that is also change, something the US definitely needs. If mccain gets elected, NOTHING is going to change.

But this isnt a political forum. Still, I too hope that we can advance: stop focusing on being the big bully thats in everybody's business. Instead, we should be a progressive nation with a WORKING democracy. As of now, it looks like thats all for show. And in reality our policies are more like fascism.

It is true. More people are undoubtedly beginning to understand that cannabis isn't all that harmful. I think in some time, there should be no argument against its' legality. And instead of a 21+ ID rule, any drugs that become legal should be dispensed to people with an IQ about of about 100 of so.

This way we don't have dumbasses with their immature, disgusting "420 subculture, dude" that gives cannabis a bad name.

Of course, this is just wishful thinking.

Oh, and as for marijuana becoming legal RECREATIONALLY in our lifetimes, i certainly will be disappointed if by the time i die marijuana is still illegal, even though I doubt I'll be hitting a bong on my deathbed.

EDIT: I also think that if other countries started doing this, the US would follow. not just decriminalization/medical use (which is what the article spoke of), though. Full recreational legal sale, and not a gray area like the RC's.

It's not like Obama'sgonna be the change cause he said he didn't pulled a Clinton and inhaled the smoke ,that all members of the GOP don't want drugs decreminalized or even taxed and legal. Even though he had no chance I bet if Ron Paul would have won the nomination and eventually became president most drugs, not only marijuana would be taxed.

Also loads of civilized countries decrimminalized, but for example Denmark is smaller than Florida and has less habitants, that doesn't mean U.S.A. would decriminalize cause Neherlands and Portugal did.

Well I hope so because that would be great for us in Canada too. I think the only reason it isn't legal now is because they don't want the American politicians on our case. I remember it was up before congress a while ago and that was basically the reason they gave. The Americans don't look favourably on it. 90% of our goods are traded with the U.S.. Forced really by political economic manipulation. The was talk of Canada becoming a major conduit into the U.S. for drugs.

And in return we get American guns. The world is a really wacky place.

must disagree! Decriminalizing marijuana would free up sooo much money. It costs $17,000+ to keep one inmate alive in jail for a year.

I don't expect things to get much better for at least 20 years. It may not happen in our lifetimes. It may appear that things are moving slowly in the direction of decriminalization, but how long until the pendulum swings in the other direction? How long until the public is whipped into a frenzy over the next demon drug, just like with crack in the 80's or the hysteria over weed in the 30's? Then it starts all over again. More restrictive laws and harsher punishment.

Don't expect much positive change, or you'll be disappointed.

There are a couple of problems with that idea.

First, nearly half of the population has an IQ<100. You would be discriminating against a large percentage of the population, most of whom would be capable of having a reasonable understanding of the potential dangers of drug use.

Secondly, this would not get rid of the black market. Plenty of folks would sell to the less intelligent for a profit. Anyone with a low IQ could easily get someone else to buy the drug anyway. It would not work.

I really don't like the idea of the government testing and keeping records of its citizens' IQs anyway.

It would be reasonable to refuse to sell to anyone who doesn't have the mental capacity to understand the risks involved, such as children, the mentally retarded, or anyone in a psychotic state. If a legal drug or dangerous item was knowingly sold to someone like that and someone gets hurt or killed, it might already be considered criminally negligent. I'm not sure of the law with regard to that.

i wish i could help and I really love Obama because I think he could really help America from the very real problems we have, But I also think John McCain will, because he is a realist, look at his position on immigration, he was only acting right-wing (last 2 years) to seal his White House bid so he can get in there, and do everything the way he wants, regardless of what he promised (See every other single US election in the history of the U.S. and elections) Also, how did we avoid war with the Iranians before? not with Carter's consensus talks, but Reagens tough talk got the hostages released on his inauguration in 1979

Pato says:

Yes man! Legalize it! Decriminalize it!
And I man Mr. Banton will advertise it... Sensimelia!

Me send a letter to the residence of the president
with a stamp on the front saying very urgent.
The message inside went something like: Legalize it! Sensimelia!

Sensimelia is a herb that grows naturally
just like any other plant or tree.
Natural as the birds, natural as the bees
and just like them sensi ought to be: Free!
To be grown anywhere that we please
in the city in the town and in the country. Free!
In the hills and in the valley
sensi should be there for everyone to see.

To call sensi a drug is very absurd
it should be known as a natural herb.
So much diseases sensi has cured
that's why doctors use it all round the world.
For glaucoma and fever, rheumatism, arthritis and asthma
insomnia, emphysema and to block epileptic seizure.
To alleviate pain and nausea
associated with the AIDS and cancer.
Some say it is the best stress reliever
Lord knows I am believer.

Give me the ganja cookie, and the herbal tea.
Sensimelia is: Irie!
I don't care what no government say.
Sensimelia is: OK!

Legalize it! Yes man legalize it now!

We want legalization, decriminalization and emancipation
for all those sentenced to incarceration for participation
with the healing of the nation.

It's just another case of political insanity
abusing the rights of humanity.
But we should all plant a seed of this weed that we need
to avoid an ecological calamity.
We can use for paper to save some trees
use it for fuel to save some seas.
Use it for medicines to help fight diseases
and use it for food when we hungry.

Legalize it! Fe we medication.
Legalize it! Lord fe we meditation.
Legalize it! Woe throughout the nation.
Legalize it! Yes we sensimelia.

Yes! From downing street to D. C.
time to paint the white house green.
You know what I mean... Scene!

I love taking a little escapade to Montevideo, Uruguay whenever I can, it´s called the netherlands of south america, marijuana is decriminalized, crime is low and you can score on the streets easily or bring smelly skunk wth you on the boat or plane, they make no fuzz about psychedelics either and have cool farmacias if you know doctors there.
Basically All psychedelics are List I drugs of the Opium Law here in the Netherlands, except for mushrooms, but they will be put on List I as well, later on this year. And neither the well stocked pharmacies or doctors are of any use here, since we have some of the tighest prescribing regulations in the world. So Montevideo actually sounds better than the Netherlands, cause all we have in common is the decriminalised cannabis and the easy attitute towards personal amounts of drugs.

It's ironic to read about the US finally appearing to (possibly) get itself and it's drug policy out of the medieval times and into the 21st century, following the Netherlands and most other European countries, who went them before, several decades ahead. I doubt how long it's going to take though, as the largest majority of America's citizens still appears to be very conservative, and not exactly fond of decriminalising cannabis, let alone any other drugs. And although it might one day actually happen that cannabis is decriminalised in the US, I still however would never see it happen that they get coffeeshops over there. The sale and trade of cannabis would still remain in illegality. So all in all, little progress would have actually been made.

Do you really think McCain would do anything to ease the drug laws? I don't recall him ever saying anything favorable for easing the drug laws, even before his first run for president. Have you heard what he has said? There are videos on youtube if you want to hear what he has to say on the subject. His antidrug views are extreme.

If you know of a single speech or comment where McCain has said anything about lessening penalties or restrictions on medical use, I'd love to see it.

His position on drugs is less concerning to me than his position on war. I'd worry not just about a continuation of the current war, but the possibility of expanding it to other countries. We do not have the troops or money to get involved in another bloodbath.

I believe he is sincere in his statements against drugs.

There is also no way I can trust a man who still thinks going into Iraq was the right thing. There are valid arguments for staying longer, though I think it is too late to fix things and we should exit ASAP. Believing that starting the war was the right thing seems delusional to me at this point.

I think Obama is clearly the lesser evil on drug policy.

Did Reagan really play much of a role in getting the hostages released? A quick look on wikipedia seems to suggest other reasons:
wikipedia said:
The death of the Shah on July 27 and the invasion of Iran by Iraq in September 1980 made Iran more receptive to the idea of resolving the hostage crisis. Despite losing the November 1980 presidential election to Ronald Reagan, President Jimmy Carter, in the final days of his office, negotiated the release of the hostages through Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Algerian intermediaries and members of the Iranian government.

In the closing days of Carter's Presidency, Algerian diplomat Abdulkarim Ghuraib opened fruitful, albeit biased, negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. This resulted in the "Algiers Accords" of January 19, 1981, which entailed Iran's commitment to free the hostages immediately.

Point I: Non-Intervention in Iranian Affairs, "The United States pledges that it is and from now on will be the policy of the United States not to intervene, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in Iran's internal affairs." Other provisions of the Algiers Accords were the unfreezing of $8 billion of Iranian assets and immunity from lawsuits Iran might have faced. On January 20, 1981, minutes after Reagan was sworn in as President, the hostages were formally released into U.S. custody, having spent 444 days in captivity.

I am not too familiar with what went on during the crisis, but I think the unfreezing of $8 billion in assets had more to do with their release.

I did a quick look at some other sources, and they did not credit Reagan with the freeing of the hostages. What I have read suggests that the Carter negotiations were successful. Maybe you know something I don't.

Not to be too nit picky, but you might notice that you got the year of inauguration wrong. It was 1981, not 1979.

actually U.S.A. has a lot more important things to do on internal and foreign policy and it´s economy than discusing about drug laws, and truth is marijuana will stay criminalized, as all other illegal drugs, IMO for a couple of decades...oh and the invcasions are neccesary, you moron....living in the U.S.A. you should see how poor people live in South America, and republicans always did more for latins than democrats did...anyway if you want to namedrop a good recent Democrat president, pick...welll, just don´t pick that antisemite Jimmy Carter, Malaise forever.

Anyway Chavez is getting money and people from Iran, they are turninglocal tribes to islam, like the Guajiros for example, if you´re interested on the subject i could find loads of links, or you coukld google it. Fuck i ewven have links from the Argentine Intelligence Service, they are in spanish, but they give me chills when I read them and see the pics.

Stating how Hizzbollah is active in the north of Argentina, and they manage the llegal bric weed biz, other reason to grow your own down here, anyway the man is a loco, oh and he opened a Kalashnikov factory with the help of his dictator friend Putin, it´s the only factor outside of Russia. dunno why Kalashnikovs are teh weapon of choice for toting around with it of crazy megaloman tyrants and mujhaidinis alike....

How this affect me? well i can leave south america whenever I want, I´m not a latino, but what about them? I´m jew and ther were already 2 bombs linked to Iran in 1992 and 1994 in Buenos aiores in the israle Embassy and in 1994 at an argentine-jewish center, more than 100 people where killed in both those attacks. Which where the first terrorist jihadi terrorist bombings in America...then you got 9/11 and spain got 3/111 and even worse the biggest asshole less competent president in Europe, Mr Zapatero, which only knows how to fill his pockets and give anachronic speeches.

Now that there´s no usSR anymore the Jihad (yeah i know the concept of struggle, thqt there are loads of ways to interpret the koran etc.) is very real, and who the fuck is gonna do something? Since the spanish came here and catholicized all the indians there has never been an operation like the one Ahmadenijd and chavez are leading, and i don´t think the payed by hugito Chavez brainwashing religion imposing thugs with hizbollah flags would a`ppreciate the big Magen David I have tattoed ,yeah I knpow in the torah it ays you shouldn´t do it, but I also eat bacon, and my father is protestant, it´s just about the way i feel about my faith, and the tat on the left arm of my tall junkie ex-patratied skinny white ass....and I have loads of friends and family here (the jewishpart pof my family) i know chavez will fall beacuse of his deliriums or will be thrown out eventually, buit in the meantime his politicl and economical influence and alliance with ahmadinejad really relly worries me.

And well I´d lov to see obama taking Chavez down Noriega style, but that seems more likely with Mc Cain, he knows where he´s at, Obama did shit, never was in the army, like dubya.

So I really don´t care cause about this, cause everytime i go to any big coty in the states 2*3hours after i get off the plane and drop my stuff at the hotel I tak a walk downtown and have no problem finding drugs from weed to heroin.

The only candidate who would have done the right thing with drugs and foreign policy and personal liberties was/is Ron Paul... but hey it reminds me of Teenage riot by sonic youth, insted of putting the guy from Dinosaur Jr. as president you put Ron paul...well I can daydream as any average american who has slave-rapings fantasies, I dunno how it´s in rural areas, but in the big cities and i´ve been coast to coast south to north and Canada also, I didn´t see any racial tension at all. Actually I saw black Guys in suits driving mercedes and Caucassian junkies who were in pathetic form. ...anyway the world needs a new order, and if you´re so woried about Marijuana decriminalization think how the fuck you´d be abke to smoke with a taliban like regimen imposssed on you, judged by Sharia´a law instead of Common law.

Yeah it´s a lesser of 2 evils thiong, and luckily Obama beat Clinton, which iMO was the worse thing that could happen to the uSA and threfore the world, having Hillary on power.

I´m with Mc Cain all the way due to my political views (please I know my shit, don´t preach me or call me a neocon in a espective way or try to change my views, cuz I´ll call you an Anacronico Puto Gringo Bolchevique...oh btw Mexicans are great workers, and it´s the employers whoi take advantage, I also see McCain being from AZ more worried and pro-latin, than millionairie yuppie from the city by the lake Mr. Obama.

well I´ll be smoking some homegrown watching the bombs fall hidden in a farm in Sweden or in the beauty of Reykjavik, Iceland and it´s gorgeous ladies...for real, whoever wins the election will have a very rough mandate with drastical desitions. Leave weed aside, grow it yrself or with some friends.

Now i´m gonna do some illegal cocaine i aqquired today in 10mins after texting my man, and that´s the way the illegal drug market will keep operating.

Let´s be serious the fucking world, and a possible genocide (and I only use that word for the Shoah and what the Turks did to the Armenians, which was never recognized officially)are at stake...well gonna end up my Peruvian cocaine and go and fuck my girl and then smoke some post-coitum weed, listening to good music....that way you can fforget what a fucking mess this world and the human race is. Oh and racism is EVERYWHERE Rich Catholic Argentinians are from the Opus Dei or Xenophobic as fuck ( oh and btw this ppl hate USA and Israel, like their ¨enemies¨the wannabe anachroni kids that Swedish police took well care of in Goteborg) and the fucking jihadis everyone is so politically correct about...so yeah I may sound like a retarded male Oriana Fallaci, but Mc cain is the man for the job this next 4 years, I´m sick of the 2periods you´ve been having, ohhh yeah i shouldn´t be worrying, rather enjoying, I don´t want to see my beautiful girl with a Burka being a Dhimmi, oh and drug laws in Iran are the way to go, check them out, you get killed if you have a roach, though they have/had a rather good methadone program, Iran is a REAL; VERY FUCKING REAL THREAT, o is Huguito Chavez.

but hey this is just my opinion,my rant, hope you made it till here and if you don´t know how much hate there´s towards the U.s since the 40´s (oh another lie the dubya broke the ¨good relationships¨, based on anachronic potical correctness bullshit),oh and when you flame me, remember i doin´t live in the states, I have Fox News and Fox News latin america on my cable, but never bothered watching and yeah it shows how stupid rtepublicans can be, but that´s nothing compared to what´s gonna happen next.

When 9/11 occured I was smoking weed with at the studio with the lead guitar player of my band...on the next one I´ll be doing something similar.

time for a line of cocaina, a long opiated but horny as hell fuck, an eurotrash beer (warm 12%) and a joint with ambien and seroquel and some random benzo....enjoying it whilst i can, hope ypu´re enjoping yourself too, but be ready to fight if neccesary if some loco with his army wants to take your personal liberties, that´s when the world needs the u.s. and though I´m european citizen the EU (except for some countries, Denmark comes to mind, Denmark has always been IMO the most noble country in Europe) has shown that it´s totally useless....so it´s not only about America (usa, cuz argentina is part of america too) action needs to be taken fast, as I SAID IN THE MEANTIME ENJOY YOURSELF....

Brother, I totally agree, however our government likes to have their heads up uncle sam's arse.

Actually it costs annually 1 billion dollars to incarcerate Marijuana offenses.

Another idea, random, and from left field... Anyone get the feeling that the logging industry and oil industry is scared of legalization. Hemp can replace most logging and the oil can be converted (I know scientists can figure this shit out!!!) for industrial lubricant. Let alone tha fact if the logging industry is supplemented, how much in fuel will be saved.... The possibilities are endless, we just have to keep speaking openly about how we feel and support NORML.

PS- to The You Geezer: i bet anyone 10 bucks that when a new President comes into power, South America (specially Chavez) hits America where it hurts, corn, other exports and oil, inflation of commodity value is an amazing thing. Oh and I bet China and India tax the hell out of Iron/steel, because we trade with both countries (long story china vs. india).

It wont happen for awhile, for one alcohol, tobacco, and pharm companies are gonna throw as much money as they can at keeping it illegal. Whoever builds prison's are gonna start throwing around money too, then theres the parent groups, religous groups all spewing the generic line of bullshit about the "kids"

First, thanks for reading my post Winding vines.

Yeah, I think i learned quite a bit about inflation and commodities prices living down here (not that we didn´t have inflation in europe in the 90´s, and without the Marshall plan Western Europe would be like what Eastern Europe was under USSR influence but that´s other story).

Anyway if he wanted to hit where it hurts (he supported Hillary, so I don´t see Hugo being very fond of any of the 2 gringos who stand on the contend to be commander in Chief) ,he must see them as white ¨yanqui¨ and black ¨yanqui¨, what should he do? he should call his amigo Mahmoud Ahmadinjead, and have him stop exporting crude to the western world and venezuela will also styop importing oil to all western countries, except to some satellites like Correa in Ecuador or Morales in Bolivia... but that won´t happen, yeah if it does the barrel may skyrocket, but then again 55% of venezuela lives in EXTREME poverty nowadays (it was 40something% before 1999), Chavez sacked from PDVSA (venezuala´s state oil company) to all oppositors and foreign workers and gave the charges to friends of his who know jackshit about extracting oil or refining crude etc....so PDVSA is his wallet, and he´s already burning the benjamins, so it´ll bne all banter against he´s planning to rise oil prices and buy the OPEC for them to start using euros instead of dollars, but not cutting the supply, cause if he did and Venezuela was embargoed the great people of Venezuela who aren´t Chavistas (about 65*70% of the population, and more when the food is scarce, the inflation has gone thru the roof, all the red shirt wearing followers will tur5n their back, who cares you pay 3cents a gallon for oil when you have to make an hour queue to buy expired bread and obviously don´t own a car never did and thanks to Chavez and scum like him, prolly never will).

A more Chavez thing to do is if Mc Cain wins is demonize him from minute one, and if obama wins demonize him after his first public speech, Chavez has already said in Alo! Presidente (Hello! President) his TV Show (yeah he has a TV Show where he rants against whoever he has a fight with at the time, dubya, the king of spain, the jews, he even questioned the need to follow the rules of time of the greenwhich meridian, saying that it´s half an hour wrong for Venezuelas time zone, and saying risig unemployment was due to people not having sun and took it on greenwhich...lol, so what about Scandinavian countries? there where days i slept till 2 in the afternoon and never saw the light of day, still unemployment is much lower than in Venezuela...well in his paranoid militar mind enemies come and go all the time, he also said that the Holocaust didn´t happen on that show, and said the humans have been inhabitating Earth for 25 centuries...Hello President...Greek*Roman culture rings a bell? Ever heard of a little book called The Bible?).

Alo Presidente sometimes can last up to 8 hours of his frantical ranting, if it was a coedy character I´d laugh my ass of, still do, but well knowing what´s at stake i shouldn´t) that ¨Don´t be fooled, Obama is another slave from the empire to the jews¨ and with the upcoming food crisis the vast fertile green territories of beautiful Venezuela are great to plant crops...with a smart president Venezuela could be afu cking example in S.A. ....bvut this is hiw it works, Argentina used to be the 3rd richest country in the world after the uk and usa in 1903, anyway back to Chavez you can find some funny clips of alo presidente with subtitles in english on you tube, if you want some comedy and are searching for a new style Chavez is a comical genius, I say throw him outta power, put him in Jail but let him broadcast Alo! Presidente (that´s when freedom of speech goes back to Venezuela) .

Oh and if you have some more info on the steel and iron industries China/India and their taxation rules and a little bit of background I´d be really interested.

Well I got caught up in the Euro today so I havent smoked a propper joint yet, and after all this post is about weed, so at least i´m gonna smoke some Thunderfuck and do more Cocaína (which I shouldn´t be doing cause money goes eventually to Chavez, but I can´t grow and make my own coke...)

Oh, and as for marijuana becoming legal RECREATIONALLY in our lifetimes, i certainly will be disappointed if by the time i die marijuana is still illegal, even though I doubt I'll be hitting a bong on my deathbed.

I too will be disappointed if marijuana isnt legal by the time im on my deathbed. From what ive been reading though, i think at least medical marijuana will be legalized. but how can they legalize medical and not recreational? craaazy!
